Down on the Farm: 5/4/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies rallied for 2 runs in the 9'th inning to beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 7-6:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .333.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(7).  BA= .345.
Dan Otero(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.80.

Noonan just turned 23 yo which is not all that old for a prospect at the AAA level.  He may not be a bust after all.  Roger K is showing some serious power numbers with a .664 SLG% and a .400 OBP to go with it.  Looks like that year and a half struggling in AA is paying dividends.

AA  Altoona Curve passed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-7:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 3, 2 HBP, SB(7).  BA= .243.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .271.
Chris Dominguez(LF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .280.

Brown is hitting .282 over his last 10 games and .333 over his last 7.  Chris D has a 4 game hit streak but had been slumping badly before that. He has just 1 HR so far this season.

High A  San Jose Giants crushed the Inland Empire 66'ers 10-0:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .238.
Joe Panik(SS)- 3 for 3, 2 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .240.
Devin Harris(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .180.
Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.57.
Stephen Harrold(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 5.06.

Lofton is on a tear hitting .312 over his last 10 and .454 over his last 6.  Haven't called Panik's name in he highlights for awhile. His OBP is .350.

Low A  Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 7-2:

Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.95.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.77.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 16.00.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.29.

Mejia's struggles continue.  Arnold has 17 K's in 13 IP with a 1.63 GO/AO but also has 13 BB's.

  1. Bradley and Snodgrass have been great. We will need a couple good prospects to strengthen the starting rotation after Lincecum is gone. The blueprint is out, get at Lincecum early and he falls apart. If he gets through a couple innings he pitches fine.

    1. I think Timmy will pull it together and have a good stretch, but I'm also glad the Giants are only on the hook for 2 years with him.

    2. Timmy for Two is working out really well for the Giants right now - would rather it not.

  2. I never wish ill on anybody, but more than happy if that leads to our Giants benefit. Last year, Osich fell to us, and he's been great so far in SJ, though recently out with injury (another Liriano or Ainsworth?). Just want to point out that Kyle Zimmer is out with a hamstring injury, which seems to linger, at least with Giants players (like Durham). Now, he's probably sky high and perhaps a fall still don't make him reach our pick (19th or 20th, can't recall, but think the former), but if it lingers, who knows.

(nothing you can control, DrB, and I am sure it happens on my site too, but I hate this new verification system, especially since it knows who I am on my site but then is blind to that on your site, also a blogger site, and forces me to verify)

  3. Yeah, I'm excited about Noonan's good start so far. I've been hot on him since his great half year in SJ a few years back, but the past couple have been trying to the faithful. Glad to see him doing it now.

Exactly, he's still very young as a prospect, so was probably a bit overmatched, as he's not a top prospect but a tweener like most are. Still, if he can hit well as a 23 YO, he could thrust himself back into contention for role as starting 2B, or maybe even SS, if he hits really well. I would note his sterling contact rate and BB/K ratio, both excellent so far this season, very much like his half season in SJ that got me excited, when his BB/K ratio rose to roughly 1.0.

Just a few things worry me. One is his lack of extra-base hits so far. Has he become a slapper? I hope not, according to him, he was hitting more line drives using that video system in 2010 or 2011. So his poor 2011 season disappointed me.

But Shandler has a saying that once a prospect has produced something, it then becomes a matter of him replicating that, cause once he does it, he owns it. So I've still been hopeful that Noonan would do it one day. Especially once I realized how young he still was compared to the leagues he was in.

The other thing that has had me concerned is that he went from stealing a lot to stealing almost nothing. He was never a speed guy, but I thought at least teens would be doable at each level. He's stealing more this season, so perhaps he either had a lingering leg injury that I'm not aware of or had focused more on his hitting and fielding than stealing, since he knew that already.

  4. Nice start for Noonan.. Since he was drafted in 2007, does he become a 6 year FA after 2012? Fresno looks like they have a nice AAA Team.. It seems like they have prospects at different positions that they can call up in case of injury.. Gillaspie is the latest example. The only position that a lack of depth stands out is starting pitching, although Hacker did well earlier, Sabean admitted in the Spring that they would like to be 2 or 3 deep.. Whats going on with Surkamp and Runzler? As mentioned earlier I can't wait to see Gary Brown patrolling CF at AT&T!

    1. Not sure what you are referring to. Did they say something new over there or are you referring to past negative assessments of the Giants farm system? Mike Newman, one of the guys who writes about prospects over at Fangraphs has a site called Scouting the Sally, so he pretty much only knows that league. That may color his opinion. Last year he didn't even bother to go see a Greenjackets game because an acquaintance told him there was nothing to see there. When I asked him specifically about Mike Kickham and Seth Rosin, he didn't have an opinion because he had never seen them.

The other guy, Marc Hulett doesn't seem to have any particular insight into prospects you can't get in a whole host of other places.

Right now, the Giants farm system is not going to rank high because they have rushed a lot of their top prospects to the majors and rankings are a snapshot in time. The farm system is in good shape for the Giants needs, though, and will continue to benefit from a strong scouting department. I would like to see a few more high ceiling pitchers either break out or get drafted this year. I'd also like to see a top notch 5 tool prospect or two emerge.

    2. I will say this about Mike Newman,

He scouted Zack Wheeler in Augusta and his assessment is pretty much identical to mine, so if he's seen a player, I would take what he says seriously.
