Game Wrap 5/21/2012: Giants 4 Brewers 3

It looked like a 3 run HR by Buster Posey and a great pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner would go for naught as an error followed by a HR from Ryan Braun tied it up late.  The Bullpen hung tough and Hector Sanchez delivered the game winning blow in the top of the 14'th inning.  Key Lines:

Melky Cabrera- 3 for 5, 3B(5), 2 BB.  BA= .360.  Melky continues his amazing season with 3 more hits including his 5'th triple.  He got on base 5 out of 7 PA's.

Buster Posey- 1 for 5, HR(5), BB.  BA= .294.  Buster put the Giants on top early but came out on a double switch when it went into extra innings.  Hector made the move pay off.

Hector Sanchez- 1 for 1, HR(2).  BA= .297.  I just had a feeling Hector was going to go deep.  I love watching his controlled aggression at the plate and the way he takes charge from behind the plate.  He looks like he's having fun out there, but in an intense way.

Madison Bumgarner- 7.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 2.85.  Bumgarner struck out the first two batters in the 8'th with a 3-1 lead.  Crawford made an error on Aoki and Braun tied it with a huge dinger.  Bumgarner is a mentally tough as they come and Braun is a great hitter, but gotta wonder if Bumgarner was thinking he shoulda been out of the inning.

Bullpen- 6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 7 K's.  Hector kept putting down deuces and Casilla kept shaking him off.  Casilla finally relented on the last pitch of the game and got lucky the ball stayed in the yard for a harmless flyball out with a runner on base.  It could easily have been a walkoff dinger for Corey Hart.

The Giants moved back to 2 games over .500 at 22-20, but the Dodgers kept on winning, 6-1 over the D'Backs so the Giants remain 7 games behind the NL West leaders.  Arizona fell to 10.5 games back while the Pathetic Padres and Reeling Rockies fell further behind in last place at 13.5 games out.

Matt Cain goes against the wily Shaun Marcum in game 2 of the series tonight.

  1. Sign Melky!

Hopefully MadBum and Craw learned something tonight.

Still think paying Lopez and Affeldt real $$$ was a bad idea?

Forget about the MLB draft, how many Venezuelan free agents does it take to build a baseball team?

  2. something is wrong with nate. laskey thinks he has given up as the result of his perception that the team has given up on him

if that is the case, he needs to be moved as soon as possible

craw needs to stop thinking and play by instinct...that is when he doesnt make errors

maddy was great...the pen was better....baby panda is fun....bums are for real

i still think that melky goes for fa and pagan signs a 3 year with option

    1. The only way to move Nate is to release him. He has no trade value, none, nada. There is not MLB team that would sign him to anything more than a minor league contract. Giants will keep him on the bench and see if he can work his way back as a bat and defensive replacement off the bench. Problem is with Melky, Pagan and Blanco in the OF, there is not much need for a defensive replacement.

I have come to the conclusion that Nate has a long swing that is prone to fall out of sync easily, has to commit to his swing too soon, and is not particularly good at reading pitches. He may be still capable of short hot streaks but will always be prone to brutal slumps.

I'm sorry to say that as I had high hopes for him, but it's time to move on.

    2. Note on sfgiants.com about Hector Sanchez choking up on the bat. That's exactly what I've said Nate and Belt need to do. This just reinforces that notion!

    3. bacci40,

If Pagan signs for 3 yrs, wouldn't he be blocking Gary Brown or does he move to a corner OF spot?

    4. doc, if you can see what the issue is, why cant bam bam...and if he can, are you and the giants saying it cant be fixed? and why wont these guys choke up?

as for blocking brown...i have no problem with productive players blocking anyone....if this org can resign pagan and melky...ill be fine with it

    5. I was referring to this year in terms of Melky, Pagan and Blanco in the OF. BTW, Blanco has cooled off considerably, so don't be shocked to see Nate back in there soon, or possibly Huff or Pill out in LF.

I'm not a hitting coach. If choking up on the bat was the answer for everybody, I'm sure a lot more hitters would be doing it. You have to be comfortable holding that bat. On the other hand, Barry Bonds, who I think knows a thing or two about hitting chocked up by as much as an inch or more on the handle and he seemed to bet pretty good leverage on the ball.
