Down on the Farm: 5/20/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies pounded the Red Rock Express 11-3:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .366.
Todd Linden(1B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .297.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 4 for 5, 2B, 2 HR(2).  BA= .326.

Noonan's huge game netted him 8 Ribeyes out of the Grizzlies 11 total runs.  Is this a breakout for Nick, or is the PCL just a huge joke?  He's still fairly young for the level.

AA  Akron Aeros edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(11).  BA= .248.
Johnny Monell(C)- 3 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .253.
Daryl Maday(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.55.

Brownie is hitting .300 with a .378 OBP over his last 10 games.   Monell is hitting .344 over his last 10.  I haven't seen Tommy Joseph's name recently.  Injured?  Maday has been a workhorse logging 25.1 IP over 15 appearances with a 25/6 K/BB.

High A  San Jose Giants outlasted Stockton Ports 8-7:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 SB(9).  BA= .257.
Adam Duvall(DH)- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .256.
Devin Harris(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .194.

Low A  Savannah Sand Gnats topped the Augusta Greenjackets 5-3:

Nothing to see here.

  1. Noonan: OGC getting rewarded for keeping the faith.

Brown: hopefully the breakout is coming as the warm weather arrives to boot. The extra base hits need to come as well.

Chris Dominguez has fallen off in a bad way.

Pretty sure you noted that Baggs called Kelby Tomlinson the fastest player in the Gints system. Shawn Payne and Tomlinson look like the only interesting Low-A hitters right now.

    1. In BA 2012, Baggs names Gary Brown the fastest baserunner (as distinct from "fastest player"), just FYI. Hill and Relaford were named the fastest runner for the Giants 2011 draft.

Baggs noted that Tomlinson was one of two top in tools playing SS in Giants 2011 draft, above Panik.

Thanks for the plug but I'm just glad that Noonan seems to be finally figuring it out, he just showed so much talent at the end of that season - day and night, literally, going from clueless to great in both BB and K. I guess he's keeping up the early Utley-lite comps (all except power) going, as Utley didn't figure it out until later too.

And I kept the faith on Ishikawa and it hasn't gotten me anywhere yet except for a nice 3-4 months in 2009. :^) There's still hope for Adrianza though! :^D

Though I would note that since Gamel went down, Travis has started 9 games, played in 14 (out of 15), and is hitting .333/.421/.636/1.057 with 2 HR in 33 AB, 8 RBI, 5 BB vs. 7 K's (a little under 80% contact). And if you take out his non-starts where he went 1 for 6 with 2 K's, that's 2 HR in 27 AB, 7 RBI in 9 starts, 5 BB vs. 5 K's (82% contact rate), and much better batting line (my calc went on the fritz... :^( ). As much as I like Belt, I still think it would have been a better transition to keep Ishikawa around until Belt was ready for the majors.

Travis I've had a special link with because it was over him that I had my first big drag out, sprawling all around fight on the internet. Not something I'm proud of, but it is what it is. What I've learned is that this type of behavior is not really something I want a part, it is just not the me I want to be.

It also has meaning because the other guy used some stuff I shared with him in confidence in a BS way to try to publicly dismiss my opinion (he dragged my long-dead father into the conversation in a back-handed way to denigrate my comments; yeah uniquely generic classy guy). This guy said that the Giants should dump Ishikawa (outright) because Brad Vericker and Jason Columbus were better prospects, and I said that you don't dump a guy with that much power at that young an age nor that low, without giving him more chances. I think history has proven me right many time over.

But I'm just more happy for Travis, a really nice guy who I think the Giants gave short shrift to, I would have stuck with Travis instead of trading for Garko, he's a good platoon player vs. RHP and plays great defense at 1B. And who knows, maybe could have figured out LHP enough to start full-time if given enough chances, he's doing OK in limited chances this season, though very poorly over his career. Still only 28 YO, some guys figure it out during their prime years. I had always hoped that if he didn't make with the Giants, that he could do it with his hometown Mariners. However, Justin Smoak, the darling of the MCC crowd is hogging the opps there; maybe next season?

  2. DrB, Joseph got concussed on the 12thish by a bat swing from Manny Machado so he's been on the DL.

  3. Thanks for the info on Joseph, Anon.

I'm glad that Monell is getting some more time behind the plate. In a system that has so many catching prospects, I don't know why, but I keep pulling for Monell.
