Game Wrap 5/27/2012: Giants 3 Marlins 2

The Giants got another tremendous effort from Melky Cabrera, a well pitched game by Matt Cain and the bullpen and a mostly well managed game by Bruce Bochy to complete a successful road trip.  Key Lines:

Melky Cabrera- 4 for 4, HR(4), 2 SB(9).  BA= .369.  Melky continues to be just amazeballs!  I paid just $4 for him in my fantasy auction draft and said at the time he was the most underrated player in all of fantasy baseball.  Kruk and Kuip were pimping him for All-Star starter and I fully agree.  I've seen all 4 of Melky's HR's and every one has been a line drive.  No sirree!  No high majestic moon shots from Melky even though I'm sure he is physically capable of it.  In his first AB, he turned on an inside pitch and pulled it down the line for the second time in the series.  Many hitters would have been tempted to start trying to pull everything down the line.  Not Melky!  He went right up the middle in his next 3 AB's for 3 more hits  and 2 more runs scored.  In fact, he scored all 3 of the Giants' runs in this one.  Here's what I've come to appreciate about Melky:  He plays within himself and refuses to be distracted from that.  Melky now has 46 hits in the month of May.  Only Willie Mays has more in the same month in the history of the Giants at 49.  Melky has 3 games to try to pass it.  At this rate, it should be a slam dunk.

Buster Posey- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .295.  Buster and Melky were the black hole in the Giants lineup yesterday.  Today they, along with Angel Pagan were the entire Giants offense.  Buster's double would have been a HR in AT&T, especially in the daytime and that's saying something.  What if Buster played all his games in Miller Park?

Angel Pagan- 1 for 2, 3B, SF.  BA= .308.  Another good day at the plate for Pagan.  He continues to be a bit of an enigma in the field.  He made one clutch running diving catch in left-center, but later turned a single into a double with a bobble of an easy chance on a ball that rolled right to him.

Aubrey Huff- 0 for 3.  BA= .167.  I think it's past time to give up on the notion of trying to get Huffy going.  Just ain't gonna happen at this point.  If you are going to try to get somebody going, might as well be Belt.  Alternatives would be to move Buster to 1B full time with Sanchez behind the plate.  Another idea, move Pablo to 1B when he gets back, leave Arias at 3B and trade for a 2B or else try to get the Riot going(more on that later).

Brandon Belt- 0 for 1, K.  BA= .228.  The Giants have been tinkering with some technical/mechanical aspects to Belt's swing to keep him from getting tied up on the inside stuff.  This was just a horrible AB though and had nothing to do with mechanical stuff and everything to do with an apparent inability to pull the trigger when it's necessary to swing.  Runner at 3B, no outs.  You CANNOT stand there and watch 3 strikes go by, you CANNOT! Still a better option than trying to get Huff going.

Joaquin Arias- 0 for 3, BB.  BA= .263.  Arias made several sparkling plays and had Kruk and Kuip raving about his D at 3B.  He may have been a tad slow to react to a ball that went past him to his left, but he was guarding the line on that play.

Ryan Theriot- 0 for 4.  BA= .191.  Another 0 for 4, but Riot has been hitting the ball hard.  At least two of his outs today were hard hit line drives right at OF's.  I think he probably has more offensive upside than Burriss.  The big question is on D where he made a nice acrobatic play but later almost fell down while transferring a rather routine grounder to his throwing hand and barely got the runner at first.

Matt Cain- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.79.  Pretty routine start for Cainer which is pretty darn good for most pitchers.  He even got the W and is on a pace to win 15 games on the season!

Santiago Casilla- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(12).  ERA= 1.29.  4 out Save for Casilla, but I'm glad he didn't have to face the middle of the Marlins order.  Still don't have complete confidence in him against the best hitters in the game although he usually closes out a game with a lot less drama than BWeezy.

Bruce Bochy-  Mixed bag here:  1.  I think Kruk and Kuip were making fun of his reasoning for putting Huff in the lineup against Nolasco.  There's that HR he hit back in......???  OK, Boch, just say you wanted to play Huff and be done with it!  Belt's AB was argument enough for it even though I think it's probably better to play Belt.  2.  The suicide squeeze with Pagan on third and 1 out with Arias at the plate was ridiculous.  I think it might have been born out of frustration with Belt's horrible AB that preceded it, but you gotta stay calm.  Arias' best bet was to put the ball in play and hope for at least a productive out.  3.  Beautiful job managing the pitching and you can't overestimate the the importance of that.

I always hesitate to criticize Bochy in even the mildest way because it always seems to invite a firestorm of hyperbolic knee jerk reaction, so please keep the comments rational.  Gotta be able to evaluate and discuss the good and the bad without the kneejerk stuff.

The Giants end up splitting the series and winning the road trip 4 games to 3.  Dodgers beat the "Stros so the Giants remain 7.5 games behind in 2'nd place in the NL West.  The D'Backs topped the BrewCrew 4-3 to remain 10.5 games behind the Dodgers in 3'rd place while the Rockies and Padres both lost to fall 14.5 and 16 games behind respectively.

The Giants open a 3 game set at home against the D'Backs with Barry Zito appropriately taking the mound in a Memorial Day afternoon start.

  1. I watched a handful of Royals-Halos games last year on FSW because the Royals have good young players.. Melky was hitting bombs all over the field, but I had no idea he would be this good.. Extend him! Baggs article regarding Belt finally agreeing to incorporate the adjustments the coaches want does bother me.. He might be the best option, but MLB is a results oriented business.. I'm concerned..I'd like to see more of Posey at 1st base and Zito Whisperer catching.. Regardless, 4-3 roadie is good..

    1. Bochy didn't stay calm with Arias's squeeze call. I think Belt didn't stay calm either in his AB immediately prior to that.

  2. Good calls all around DrB especially on the squeeze. What happened on the Huff GO that Morrison (?) misplayed? He doesn't seem like he would dog it, but is he all right?

    1. I didn't see the Huff GO, but he got pulled right afterward. I think the answer is that Huff is probably not alright.

  3. If they have to tinker, let Belt do it at Fresno where it would be easier. My boys were all over me this year with "I told you so". Near the end of last year they kept telling me Huff couldn't get around on a fastball from a quality pitcher. I noticed but just kept my mouth shut except on the sfgiants.com board. I took a whooping like you and I got early in 2010. Huff is ready for the green pastures.

Buster to 1B and Hector in the lineup sounds good about now.

  4. Baggs says that Belt is now doing the adjustments he resisted earlier, which is a good sign that he isn't being as stubborn.

    1. he resists making changes in his batting stance, in his approach at the plate, in going to winter ball....that stuff gets you run...if you are anyone else...ask torcato next time you need your lawn mowed

  5. What about Hector at first and Buster behind the plate? (Buster is a better defender)

    1. The whole point of having Buster at first is to save his legs not necessarily to get Hector in the lineup. If we weren't trying to save Buster legs by giving him more days off we would have Whiteside as the backup and Hector would be in AAA.

    2. No, that's not true at all, Hector's better defensivley and offensively.

    3. The Anons are talking to each other again! LOL!

I"ll say Hector is about equal a defensive catcher to Buster, but tough to say he's as good offensively. Buster seems to have gotten his groove back at the plate. I think we all agree that Hector is an offensive upgrade on either Huff or Belt right now.

    4. I read it to say Hector is better than Whiteside defensively and offensively.

    5. Oh, OK well then yeah, I agree that Hector is better than Whiteside in all phases of the game. Whiteside has some veteran savvy, but Hector is just a bright young athletic player who has a gift that Whiteside will never possess.

  6. 4 for 4....big deal....hairston was 5 for 5

someone has really gotta explain hairston and capuano to me

look, i get that players can have career years on one team at one time...but what they are doing is ridiculous

baggs said that huff was hustling down the line on that lomo play...if that is the case....he needs to retire...my 80 year old dad moves faster

how many more months should the giants wait for belt to be able to see a ball the comes inside than crosses right down the middle of the plate? how long should they wait for him to learn how to protect the plate on a 2k count? how long do they have to wait for him not to try to milk walks, when he really doesnt have the eye for it? and he wasnt up there to milk a walk...he was up to drive in a run

i thought the attempt at a squeeze was great out of the box thinking...except it was attempted against a much better out of the box manager...check mate for ozzie...the commie loving bastiche

    arias belongs at second...

got into a twit tiff with a certain online personality about belt...lets just say i won, cuz if its all about how many at bats belt has had in the majors, i wanna know where that personality and the rest were when the rest of the piano movers were getting run after less than 500 at bats....thank you...i will soon be on knbr from 3-7 dishing out my vast knowledge on all things sports....i hear cumulus pays well

    1. Bacci - I'm curious about the twitter tiff. Links? Details?

On the Belt issue, it is very interesting to me that the Bochy Belt discussion on stance made the rounds, and the muted reaction to it, at least from a casual glance that I've done.

The answer on waiting for balls to go by, ie, milking walks, is its not going to happen in the majors for very long. As in right now.

Baggs actual line on Huff, from Twitter: Aubrey Huff hustled all the way on that ground ball. Amazing how much he's slowed down compared to 2010.

Adjustments need to get made. Can the Giants cut Huff or will the ownership group turn on Larry Baer?

      Delete
    2. Shankbone,

That is a good question on whether they can even cut Huff without infuriating ownership. I still can't believe Baggs reporting last year that DFA Rowand and Tejada contributed to ownership turning on Neukom..

dont like how the org has dealt with him either

thing is...even if he proves me wrong, i dont know if i will ever like him...as a person...ill root for him...as a giant

    4. What's wrong with Belt as a person? Personally I try to stay out of the business of liking of disliking public figures, which ballplayers are, as people. Nobody's perfect. Now, reality stars whose careers are making $ millions simply by making asses of themselves on TV, that's different. They force you to make a judgement of whether you like them or not as people because that's exactly what they are putting their own personal lives out there as entertainment. Maybe that's why I was so against the TV show last year.

  7. Huff is better than Belt?

He is the stone glove player.

Today, His first AB was three pitches SO.
Second AB was Double Play ball.
Third was another weak DP-type ground ball.

At least, Belt has a good-eye, good defense.

What Aubrey Huff still stays here is a Big Joke.

I hope Bochy gives Hetor our first baseman job if only he can control 1B defense.
Otherwise, we have to stick Belt.

Huff and Pill are just a Joke. They aren't major league player.

If Belt is failed, we must find other first baseman in the trade market.

There are Kevin Youkilis, Justin Morneau and Carlos Lee.

They are all cheap maybe. My best choice is Kevin Youkilis.

    1. Cheap? Maybe in prospects, but the teams will expect salaries picked up in full right now.

    2. Youkilis, Morneau or Lee? Is this some kind of a joke? Huff might be more washed up than them but not by a lot. No thank you on all 3! That is just an uninformed comment.

I don't agree that Pill is a joke. He's a good defender at first base and has some power. I don't think Belt is necessarily failed. I think he needs to settle on a hitting plan, preferably the one the Giants want him to try, and then he needs AB's. I'm with Sabes in that I'm not convinced he's going to learn anything more beating up on the PCL down in Fresno. Right now, Belt and Huff are both dead in the water. If the Giants are going to invest time into trying to get one of them going, I think it should be Belt. At least he potentially has years in front of him whereas Huff is most certainly done after this year.

In the short term, moving Buster to first with Hector catching or moving Sandoval to first with Arias staying at 3B would both be an immediate upgrade on the Belt/Huff disaster.

  8. I'd say you reinforce success. OK, so Huff seems like he's not going to get things done for the duration. Put him out there a couple times a week, with the trigger like today late innings. Belt is providing some OBP and stellar defense. We're in a weird zone where the free belt movement has seeds of doubt. Now is the time to keep him out there, hope that the new stance and confidence placed pays dividends. As a fence stradler on this issue, aka belt neutral, I'd say I'm pleased with the Giants handling of it now. Keep the faith in your guy, see where it goes. (I'd also note that snarky Keith Law is distancing himself from proclamations of the Giants being idiots, basically saying Belt isn't the Belt he saw 2 years ago - how weak is that?)

The Riot will get some love from the baseball gods. He has not played that badly at all. I'm sure they're working the phones, but I do appreciate Sabean saying (in reference to O-Dog) that you don't want to get too many people crowding. The Giants run into that a lot anyways.

Melky and Pagan are huge wins on the trade front. Pagan has been mixed defensively, but what I really like is he doesn't give up, and he doesn't get rattled. Straight up hustler. He's a lot different than last years Met, where he became a malcontent. I think he still has a chance to be the straw that stirs the drink on this team.

Matt Cain inching towards .500 W/L. The party will be EPIC when that happens.

Bochy? He pulled his starter at the right time tonight. No criticism overflowing. Hard road to row. You want to give your starters rope, and confidence, but you also have to win games. I expect a stricter hook with Timmy going forward.

    1. I think Sabean and Co. are handling the Belt situation quite nicely, myself. To be honest, in the past I would probably have been a diehard FREEBELT guy, but I'm starting to give the FO the benefit of the doubt. I think it would have hurt Belt more if they just stuck him out there to strikeout 2 times every start with maybe only a walk or a weak single/bloop double to show for it.

The Giants have shown that they will play guys they think can succeed. Posey and Sandoval both got regular playing time when they came up. Sure, it helped that they came firing out of the gate, but I think Bochy detractors assume too much when they say he would have benched them if they didn't hit right away.

I think the Giants know what they are doing with Belt. I think they still think highly of him. They still want him to succeed. Belt ain't no Niekro or Ishikawa, and the Giants' actions so far prove that.

    2. I've been in the camp of play Huff and try to get him going and use Belt part time to develop him, but I have to say I have given up on Huff. We're close to 1/3 of the way through the season and no signs of life in his bat yet. I just think they are running out of time to invest in him. Time to put Belt out there for better or worse and let him work through whatever it is he has to work through. I guess I'm basically agreeing with you in that the worst case scenario with Belt is he draws a lot of walks for you with great 1B defense. That buys him some time that I think Huff has run out of.

I don't have an Insider subscription to ESPN so I don't get to see much of what Keith Law says. I do know I am sick of people who don't watch a lot of Giants baseball, if any, proclaiming how stupid Sabes and Bochy are. FreeBelt has been the flash point for that kind of thinking for awhile now, so it's good to see them get their comeuppance and have to scramble for excuses even though I want Belt to succeed.

I got into it with one of those dudes over on Fangraphs and someone accused me of bashing Belt, which I was not. I was simply pointing out some of the legitimate reasons why he is not necessarily the immediate savior of the franchise that many were making him out to be and the development process might not bear fruit overnight.

I still think Belt has enormous potential. Hopefully he'll start to relax and focus on what he has to do to get better now that expectations are being tempered a bit.

      Delete
    3. I don't have the Insider either, apparently it is very driven by Keith Law fans actually, so he earns his money from them and is most likely encouraged to snark. I've noticed the back off from several tweets he's made. At the start of the season he was saying something quite different, and implying the Gints didn't know what they have and are idiots.

The Giants have finally gotten out front in a positive way on Belt in the press. A lot of this is coming from Sabean, but the Bochy batting stance thing as well. Why it took this long to just spell it out like this, I'm not sure. I guess the low contact rate and the bad swinging strike ratio finally did the trick. I think he's very talented, but the plain fact is he's not barreling up balls. Not even close.

The thing is - they are winning ballgames and scoring runs. Because of that, I wouldn't mess too much at the moment. The defense is still making errors though. It annoys me when people bash Pill on the defense. He was our best rated defensive prospect by BA, he is a good 1B. Belt takes it to another level, he is excellent. Unfortunately, the vet "he can do it again" ship looks like its sailed for Huff. If he can't catch up to a fastball, everything falls apart. A Pill/Belt platoon sounds like a better alternative, especially with the OF on fire at the moment.

  9. I think Belt has potential too. Let see the next game.
