Down on the Farm: 5/22/2012

AAA  Albuquerque Isotopes edged the Fresno Grizzlies 8-7:

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 5, 2 3B(6), SB(1).  BA= .234.
Nick Noonan(2B)- 2 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .329.
Juan Ciriaco(SS)- 2 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .296

Maybe Peguero's knee is feeling better?  No he didn't steal home.  He must have also reached 1B on a fielder's choice or error or something.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Bowie Baysox 3-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 3, BB, SB(12).  BA= .250.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 8 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K's, GO/AO= 14/2.  ERA= 0.61.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(4).  ERA= 1.66.

I think it's about time for Heston to start getting some recognition as a serious pitching prospect.  He has shown the ability to get both K's and groundballs while holding his BB's way down.  His pitching line on the season is 4-1, 0.61, 58.2 IP, 11 BB, 48 K's, GO/AO= 1.67.

High A  Stockton Ports crushed the San Jose Giants 15-3:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .257.
Ryan Lollis(RF)- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .336.
Carter Jurica(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .254.

Low A  Game 1  Rome Braves downed the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 0 for 3, SB(1).  BA= .000.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 2 for 2, 2B.  BA- .250.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.86.

Game 2  Rome Braves defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 6-2:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 0 for 1, BB, HBP, SB(2). BA= .000.
Derek Law(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.08.

Galindo is back apparently as fast as ever.

  1. What's Posey career BA at miller park?
If the giants aren't able to sign Melky or Pagan do they draft compensation?

    1. The Giants can get draft compensation for Melky and/or Pagan if they offer them a 1 year contract of around $12-$12 M based on a formula agreed to in the new CBA. I would think the Giants would offer that kind of contract to both players. If they sign elsewhere, the Giants would then get the other team's first round pick plus a supplemental round pick(the CBA language is vague on this, but I believe the Giants would get the 2 picks). Both Pagan and Melky are looking like win-wins no matter if they stay or go.

    2. Melky is slam dunk, 2.0 WAR already baby! Going by the standard 5.0MM/WAR the Gints are already 4MM in the black. Pagan is at 1.1 WAR, despite the defense. (Both from B/R not that fangraphs place). So they're a 500K-1MM in the black on that. We'll see how Torres and Ram-Ram turn out. There was a ton of criticism of the Pagan trade on MCC, its quieted down as Pagan has settled in. His defense hopefully will improve, we'll see. The Melky trade is an obvious huge win already. I think both hitters will get their power going. Pagan's comments on PacBell are nice to hear after all the bitching in recent years.

  2. Would you rather sign/make-an-offer to Melky now or wait until season end. I know the guy is killing it in the BA department but I will like to see more HRs and clutch hitting. What if his average drops to .310-.320, not bad at all but if he doesn't have 15-20 HRs hes not that great considering hes a corner OF. Also he doesn't seem like a guy who teams would go crazy in free agency and offer tons of $$$$ and years. Giants might have a lot of leverage.

I think if the Giants were to sign him right now, a 5yr/$65M would do it.

    1. Based on recent FA prices, I would be OK with a 5 year $65 M extension for Melky. It would be great if they could get him on a 3 year deal but that might not offer enough security for him to bit. Free agency has become a pretty extreme sellers market. I agree that Melky has warts, but I think there's likely some team out there who would go crazy and offer him a huge deal.

    2. likely?

agent ned is writing up the offer sheet right now

you said it doc...melky gonna be in blue next season....and for a while past that....melky, kemp, ethier?....fuggedaboutit

    3. Yeah Bacci,

Gotta agree with you on that. If the Giants don't get Melky and/or Pagan extended before they hit the market....well, as you said, Agent Ned is drawing up the papers as we speak. He don't have to worry about anyone thinking it's too expensive now either.

  3. Numbers for pitchers in the minors are hard to guage, but MAN is Heston having a monster year. I would like his K numbers a bit higher, but if he can translate even half of this to SF, it makes Zito/Timmeh that much less critical.
