Scouting the 2016 Draft: Day 3 Review

After cleaning up on Days 1 and 2, the Giants settled into familiar patterns taking a variety of big, hard throwing pitchers, hitters from small colleges with video game stat lines and a few high school flyers.   Her is a rundown of the #11-40 picks just to help everybody get better acquainted with the newest Giants prospects.  Most of these players have something going for them.  They all have their warts or they would have been drafted higher.  A few may eventually sniff the major leagues.  Most will not.  I'll list them by Round and Overall Selection.

Rd. 11 #335  Jason Delay, C, Vanderbilt.  DOB:  3/7/1995.  5'11", 185 lbs.  B-R, T-R.

2016:  .248/.296/.336, 7 BB, 35 K, 149 AB.

2015 CCL:  .310/.420/.310.

Apparently a defense-first catcher from an elite program.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 12 #365  Ryan Kirby, 1B, San Diego.  DOB:  1/25/1995.  6'2", 180 lbs.  B-L, T-R.

2016:  .344/.423/.563, 6 HR, 17 BB, 22 K's, 128 AB.

Probably drafted to be an organizational player(the only 1B taken in this draft), but San Diego does play in a tough environment for hitters, so those numbers are impressive.  I particularly like the relatively low K rate.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 13 #395  Jose Layer, OF, HS PR.  DOB:  5/28/1997.  6'1", 160 lbs.  B-R, T-R.

No stats and not much scouting information.  PG timed him in the 60 as low as in the 6.60-6.70 range.  His OF throws were clocked at 92 MPH.  Those numbers would put him well above average in at least 2 tools.  The big question, as with all of these kids, is whether he will hit.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 14 #425  Conner Menez, RHP, The Masters College.  DOB:  5/29/1995.  6'3", 195 lbs.

2016:  11-3, 2.47, 102 IP, 36 BB, 103 K's.

He's got the size, K's and command.  Gotta wonder about the competition here.  I could not find any scouting reports.  BTW, Masters College seems to be located in Santa Clarita, CA.  I've never heard of it before.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 15 #455  DJ Myers, RHP, UNLV.  DOB:  12/4/1994.  6'5", 255 lbs.

2016:  6-4, 5.23, 84.1 IP, 29 BB, 70 K.

No scouting report, but love the size.  This year's version of Cory Taylor?

*********************************************************************************

Rd 16 #485  Chris Falwell, LHP, Texas A&M.  DOB:  4/14/1995.  6'7", 210 lbs.

2016:  3-5, 2.91, 86.2 IP, 29 BB, 88 K's.

Giants love to draft tall pitchers.  Again, no scouting report, but the numbers look good and from a major college program.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 17 #515  Reagan Bazar, RHP, Louisiana-Lafayette.  DOB:  6/27/1995.  6'7", 255 lbs.

2016:  1-0, 1.93, 9.1 IP, 5 BB, 3 K's.

Gotta LOL.  Rounds 15, 16 and 17 a trifecta of huge pitchers!  One of our readers found a scouting report on this guy that had him touching triple digits on the radar guns.  The Giants love drafting guys like this.  Remember Erick Threets?  So far, none have ever panned out as far as I can remember, but hey, in round 17, why not?  If they keep doing this long enough, one will eventually make it and it will be fun to watch!  Also…..gotta love the first name.  I think we know which President his parents admire!

*********************************************************************************

Rd 18 #545  Jacob Heyward, OF, Miami.  DOB:  8/1/1995.  6'2", 205 lbs.  B-R, T-R.

2016:  .227/.389/.365, 6 HR, 7 SB, 45 BB, 50 K, 203 AB.
2015:  .327/.440/.473, 4 HR, 7 SB, 20 BB, 32 K, 110 AB.

Jason Heyward's lil' bro.  Disappointing junior season.  He may well choose to stay in school.  Can obviously take a walk, but that may be the cause of all the K's and low BA.  Giants think they know how to fix that.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 19 #575  Brandon Van Horn, SS, The Masters College.  DOB:  12/18/1993.  6'2", 175 lbs.  B-R, T-R.

2016:  .280/.352/.567, 11 HR, 17 BB, 31 K, 157 AB.

Another Masters College dude.  What's up with that?  Nice numbers, but again, what's the competition?

BTW, is it The Masters College as in the faculty are masters at their subjects or the students master their subjects of study, or is it The Master's College as in a Jesus thing?  Inquiring minds want to know.  As it is in Santa Clarita, I'm going to guess it's a faith based school.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 20 #605  Justin Alleman, RHP, Lee U.  DOB:  12/20/1993.  6'1", 220 lbs.

2016:  6-5, 5.29, 64.2 IP, 13 BB, 74 K's.

Another heftily built pitcher, though not as tall as some.  Love the K and BB numbers here.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 21 #635  Will Albertson, C/OF, Catawba College.  DOB:  6/26/1994.  5'11", 190 lbs.

2016:  .404/.494/.689, 15 HR, 7 SB, 32 BB, 19 K's, 225 AB.
2015:  .467/.531/.865, 26 HR, 26 BB, 21 K's, 244 AB.
2015 Coastal Plains League:  .314/.409/.450, 4 HR, 26 BB, 21 K's, 169 AB.

Here's the video game numbers guy.  The Giants love to draft these guys.  Remember Juan Perez' numbers?  And what was that dude's name from Western Oregon U?  What happened to him?  I'll say, the numbers from the summer wood bat league look good too.  Again, it's round 21.  Whytheheck not?

*********************************************************************************

Rd 22 #665  Malique Zeigler, CF, North Iowa CC.  DOB: 9/8/1996.  6'2", 170 lbs.  B-R, T-R.

2016:  .395, 22 HR, 31 SB.

NCJAA Div II All American.  Average?  Power?  Speed?  Again, gotta love the numbers, but what's the competition?  I've learned to be skeptical of these guys until we see what they do in the pros, but again, why not take that flyer in Round 22?

*********************************************************************************

Rd 23 #695  Jacob Greenwalt, RHP, HS.  DOB:  4/30/1998.  6'1", 170 lbs.

1998?  Yikes!  I found some info on this kid.  Obviously not a big kid, but has a FB up to 94 MPH, but sat 92 early this spring.  He also has a fairly advanced curveball and changeup to go with it.  He did not say he was definitely signing, but from his quotes in a local newspaper article, it sure sounds like he's going to be a Giant.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 24 #725  Jeffery Parra, C, HS.  DOB:  1/24/1998.  6'0", 195 lbs.

Couldn't find much info.  Has a self-produced scouting video on Youtube.  Is it just me, or does he have some hang time on his throws to 2B?  He's announced he will sign.  Welcome to Giants Nation, kid!

*********************************************************************************

Rd 25 #755  Mike Rescigno, RHP, Maryland.  DOB:  10/6/1994.  6'1", 215 lbs.

2016:  2-1, 5.59, 19.1 IP, 11 BB, 23 K's, 3 Saves.

Very typical later round Giants pick.  College reliever with an interesting K/IP.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 26 #785  Nick Hill, CF, Eckerd College.  DOB:  8/2/1994.  6'4", 190 lbs.  B-R, T-R.

2016:  .391/.457/.590, 6 HR, 12 SB, 16 BB, 34 K's, 156 AB.

Another small college dude with big numbers.  I like the size, though.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 27 #815  Patrick Raotolo, RHP, Connecticut.  DOB:  1/1/1995.  5'10", 218 lbs.

2016:  2-2, 2.25, 40 IP, 11 BB, 47 K's, 12 Saves.

We'll call him a stout college closer.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 28 #845  Jayden O'Dell, RHP, Angelo St.  DOB:  5/27/1993.  6'2", 235 lbs.

2016:  0-0, 5.84, 24.2 IP, 16 BB, 27 K's.

Another stout college reliever.  I'll guess he throws hard, but who knows?

*********************************************************************************

Rd 29 #875  Mike Bernal, SS, Arkansas.  DOB:  9/6/1992.  5'11", 190 lbs.

2016:  .274/.338/.448, 8 HR, 14 BB, 35 K's, 201 AB.

Most likely drafted to be an organization player.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 30 #905  Nick Deeg, LHP, Central Michigan.  DOB:  6/25/1995.  6'5", 215 lbs.

2016:  4-7, 3.95, 98 IP, 34 BB, 86 K.
2015 CCL:  4-3, 2.05, 48.1 IP, 10 BB, 46 K's.

Giants scout the CCL heavily and depend on the reports.  Love the size here.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 31 #935  Adam Laskey, LHP, HS.  DOB:  3/9/1998.  6'3", 190 lbs.

Pre-draft rankings in the top 3 rounds.  Committed to Duke.  He's not going to sign.  Is he related to Bill Laskey?

*********************************************************************************

Rd 32 #965  John Tillman, RHP, Bellevue U.  DOB:  1/20/1994.  6'6", 215 lbs.

2016:  0-0, 6.48, 16.2 IP, 8 BB, 18 K's.

No scouting info.  Just a very Giantsy looking late round draft pick.  Again, you see the size pattern.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 33 #995  JJ Montgomery, RHP, NW Florida St.  DOB:  6/1/1997.  6'0", 200 lbs.

2016:  3-2, 2.64, 47.2 IP, 10 BB, 56 K's.

No scouting info.  More nice numbers from an obscure school.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 34 #1025 CJ Gettman, RHP, Central Washington.  DOB:  6/2/1994.  6'5', 215 lbs.

2016:  2-2, 4.15, 26 IP, 15 BB's, 40 K's, 8 Saves.

Yet another tall pitcher, college closer, big time K/IP.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 35 #1055.  Sidney Duprey, LHP, Kaskaskia CC.  DOB:  11/15/1996.  6'3", 223 lbs.

2016:  7-2, 1.70, 74 IP, 17 BB, 86 K's.

Large JC pitcher with nice numbers.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 36 #1085.  Ryan Matranga, C, USF.  DOB:  11/1/1995.  5'10", 195 lbs.

2016:  .182/.237/.221.

Those numbers!  Yikes!  Gotta think this is a courtesy pick for someone.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 37 #1115.  Chris Bono, OF, UCLA.  DOB:  10/6/1992.  6'2", 190 lbs.

2016:  .183/.335/.266, 2 HR, 10 SB.

Son of former UCLA and 49'er QB Steve Bono.  A fairly obvious courtesy pick.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 38 #1145.  David Lee, RHP, Santa Fe CC(Florida).  DOB:  9/13/1995.  6'4", 195 lbs.

2016:  6-2, 4.00, 54 IP, 41 BB, 58 K's.

Not clear from sources I read, but it sounds like he has a commitment to transfer to Florida next year.  This would match up with where he was drafted, because he looks too good to be this low.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 39 #1175.  Andrew DiPiazza, RHP, Mercer County CC.  DOB:  10/7/1995.  6'7", 215 lbs.

2016:  12-1, 1.50, 84 IP, 25 BB, 109 K's.

Another JC guy who appears to be headed to a 4 year college.

*********************************************************************************

Rd 40 #1205.  Nick Bernal, LHP, HS.  DOB:  9/1/1997.  6'3", 200 lbs.

Scouting report has him at 92 MPH.  Committed to Louisville.  He's not signing.

*********************************************************************************

OK that's all I know about this motley bunch, for what it's worth.  Anybody has more info, feel free to add in the comments.

  1. Thanks for your great work on the draft. I like what the Giants did in the draft despite not having a 1st round pick. Reynolds, Quinn, and Krook were solid picks by John Barr.

  2. Nice rundown. I bet the HS kids in the 20s sign, the Giants have too good a record on getting their guys for it not to be serious.

I think Chris Falwell is a very interesting pick, he put it together this year for Texas A&M, great K/9 with a 3/1 K/BB - from a lefty that's pretty money. At that point in the draft its a great look.

Master's is a religious college. Van Horn has a sweet highlight video of his glovework floating around the interwebz, he looked quite good.

The usual interesting mesh of later round draft picks, the Giants do a great job on this.

    1. The Master's College is a Christian college like Biola. I have a number of friends who attend there haha I'm just as surprised as you are that a couple guys were drafted from there

    2. Looked 'em up. Their total enrollment is just over 1000. They changed their name from Los Angeles Baptist College a few years ago.

    3. Chuck Fick is a Giants scout who lives in Ventura county. Could explain the picks from a small school in Santa Clarita.
