Round 4, #125: Matt Krook, LHP, Oregon. DOB: 10/21/1994. 6'4", 200 lbs.
2014: 2-1, 1.79, 45.1 IP, 19 BB, 60 K's.
2016: 4-3, 5.03, 53.2 IP, 49 BB, 68 K's.
2015 CCL: 0-1, 6.35, 11.1 IP, 8 BB, 15 K's.
Krook is from San Mateo. He was highly ranked out of HS in the 2013 draft cycle and was picked #35 overall by the Marlins. He did not sign after the Marlins didn't like his physical results. Much like Brady Aiken, the Marlins concerns proved to be well founded as Krook underwent TJ surgery early in his freshman season. He missed all of 2015 and has been inconsistent with command/control issues since. The K rates remain high, though. On video, he looks a whole lot like Josh Osich, a LHP with a no dissimilar history. The Giants went for upside/ceiling here. Great risk to take in Round 4 with potential for first round value. If it does not work out, well, it's Round 4!

Exactly like Osich. Might require a bit of overslot like Osich (note that they drafted two seniors in 9 and 10 - I'd bet that's to save some money for Krook). Remember back when he was drafted, the Giants were linked to him a ton in mock drafts. Big time John Barr value pick.
ReplyDeleteI saw both Krook and Quinn as possible second round picks, so the Giants ended up with 1 first round value and 2 seconds with their rounds 2, 3 and 4 picks. So, the Giants ended up with a total of at least 4 rounds of extra value with their picks. Krook has potential to be first round value if he can fully recover from the TJ!
