A 4-0 Giants lead disappeared in a hail of dingers off Jeff Samardzija and they didn't get it back. Key Lines:
Joe Panik- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .251. Panik is 5 for 14 over his last 3 games and his hitting .293 over his last 15.
Brandon Crawford- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B. BA= .272. Crawford is 6 for 11 in his last 3 games. He is hitting .391 over his last 7 games, .314 over his last 15 and .287 over his last 30. Baggs said Crawford's double should have been a single and his triple should have been a double. In other words, Crawford is really, really good at taking the extra base when he can.
Jeff Samardzija- 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, 4 HR, GO/AO= 8/3. ERA= 3.33. Samardzija was cruising with a 4-0 lead when the longball came back to bite him with a vengeance. It's always been his Achilles Heel and the Cardinals are really good at hitting them. Hopefully this is a 1 game blip.

Jarrett Parker has reached one of his "can't-hit-a-lick phases" which sometimes are followed by hard hitting. With 2 singles and 9 K's to show for his last 19 AB's, how long can Bochy wait? Facing a steady diet of RHP's Parker's average has plummeted and his hoped-for power has produced no HR's against righties in 33 plate appearances. His sole HR came in a blowout against the Padres' lefty Keith Hessler who has given up 2 in 3 IP's.
ReplyDeleteThis is a proverbial rock-and-a-hard spot: can anyone do better? Credit Bochy with sticking with it as he always does but Parker, at best, is an average OFer so he's not playing for his glove. It's soon time to try right-handed Mac Williamson -- he can't be worse and if he's not going to play should be back in Sacramaneto getting everyday AB's. If Grant Green were on the 40-man, he would be a veteran in left field, but that would mean exposing someone to waivers.
Since Mac Williamson is the guy who I think is/should be the Giants LF of the future, I would like to see him get some AB's somewhere and if he has to be on the 25 man active roster, then I'd like to see him play more than just against LH starters. Parker deserves a chance to, but of the two, I see Mac as the having the higher ceiling and longer term future.
DeleteThe Giants could have both Gorkys Hernandez and Grant Green, thereby letting Mac play every day in AAA and letting them sit Parker. To do so they could expose Gillaspie to waivers, since he is hitting .182 with a BABIP that suggests little hard contact; and could place Pence on the 60-day DL, retroactive to the day of his tendon tear, since the recovery time from the surgery is eight weeks, just about sixty days, and the surgery itself hasn't, I believe, yet occurred.
DeleteWell, those options have only just now come available and I am not at all sure Hernandez and Green are significant upgrades on Gillaspie. Agree with Pence to the 60 day DL, though.
DeleteGiants reportedly inquired about Andrew Miller from the Yankee. Arroyo and ???? to get him? Think Panik might be in play, he is from NY.

Andrew Miller is a heckuva pitcher and would go a long way toward stabilizing the bullpen, but I don't see the Giants giving up any players from the current starting lineup. I would hope they could deal from where they are the most deep in the minors which is pitching. I would hate to give up Beede, but the package would likely have to include him.
DeletePanik is a future superstar. No way he should be traded.
ReplyDeleteI like Panik and agree they should not trade him, but future superstar? That might be just a bit of irrational exuberance there.
