Game Wrap 6/12/2016: Giants 2 Dodgers 1

Brandon Belt's 2-run dinger trumped Joc Pederson's solo shot and Jake Peavy's veteran savvy trumped Julio Urias' youthful talent.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .297.  The Giants need more of this from Brandon Belt, especially until Hunter Pence gets back.  More dingers!  Especially ones with runners on base.  Impressive that this one came off a lefty who had been dominating the Giants up to that point.

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .268.  How frustrating is it when a leadoff triple gets stranded at 3B?  Mac Williamson had the right idea. He hacked at the first pitch and hit a flyball that was not quiiite deep enough to get Crawford home, but Gregor Blanco is in one of his horrific slumps and can't hit his way out of a paper bag right now.

Jake Peavy- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.83.  Peavy was masterful mixing pitches, speeds and locations and ultimately outdueled Urias who looked very good until Belt's HR.  Of course, Urias was helped by the Park, the shadows and a Giants lineup that featured 5 LH batters.

Peavy has pitched at least 6 innings and allowed 1 run or less in 3 of his last 4 starts and 4 of his last 6.

Hunter Strickland- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.42.  Strickland demonstrated that he is still vulnerable to being taken deep by a strong LH batter when Joc Pederson's shot landed in McCovey Cove.  It was not officially a splash hit as those can only be hit by Giants batters.

Cory Gearrin- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.22.  Gearrin faced just one batter, Justin Turner.  He threw one of the most perfect pitches I've ever seen, a back-door shuto that hit the black and froze Turner.  Turner didn't think it was a strike and got himself tossed by the ump.  It was a strike, though.

Javier Lopez- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.91.  Adrian Gonzalez made a very strange decision to try to bunt for a base hit leading off the 9'th inning against Lopez who was in there just to face AGone.  Now, Lopez has struggled mightily against LH batters so far this year and AGone hit a go-ahead HR just the previous night.  He gave away his AB and took the pressure off Lopez and by extension off Casilla who now entered the game with the bases empty and 1 out.

Santiago Casilla- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(13).  ERA= 2.77.  Casilla gave up a hard out to Trayce Thompson, then got Pederson to ground into a routine out to end the game.  Not a huge confidence builder there, but it got the job done in this game.

  1. Good game from Peavy. If Mac doesn't make that diving catch in the 1st inning, the outcome might have been different. Encouraged seeing Posey hitting into hard outs the last 2 games. Yup, Strickland makes me nervous when he's in the game. When Gonzo bunted in the 9th, my reaction was thank you very much! Urias has the tools to develop into a good pitcher no doubt. The Brew crew have been playing well, hope the Giants don't let down. Hope the Giants trade for bullpen help at the deadline.

  2. Strickland got burned by Pederson, but put another 4 or 5 very straight FBs down the heart of the plate. 97 mph helps, but I don't think he can close without locating better.
