ReplyDeletenice article on Song (i hate voggy)
how did he get back to the giants? grod....better known as the legend...was the connect
how cool is that?
Hey Bacci, I dig the links you've been posting. However, FYI, for the Vogelsong one above, for us non-subscribers:

3 AM. Gotta love it!!!
Read the Vogelsong article in the Chron today. Sporting Green: Another link to the days of my youth! I like the Vogey nickname. How great is it that Vogelsong gave the Giants one last chance to sign him because he didn't want to be a Dodger? I still think there is more to this story.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants must be really high on Sanchez. The last prospect to bypass AA completely was none other than Buster Posey. They must be thinking of Sanchez as a serious option with the MLB club this season!
the link was live and free...until right after i posted...damn them
ReplyDeletepreview...it talks about g-rod...the legend, basically being the onus to getting ryan on the team...and how strong his wife has been...among other things
and doc, fresno is really thin...wouldnt read too much into the sanchez promotion...yet
ReplyDeletelets see how the kid does
Looks like Monell took the slight personally. He had a big game tonight for Richmond...
ReplyDelete"The last prospect to bypass AA completely was none other than Buster Posey."
ReplyDelete--What about your boy James Simmons?
Not sure what the Giants are doing with Simmons. I tend to think of him as not really a prospect while Hector Sanchez would seem to be on the fast track at this point.
ReplyDeleteHey DrB, I was tweeting yesterday that the Giants must be thinking seriously about bringing Sanchez up to the majors, why else jump him two levels? I got a bunch of people basically thinking I was on crack or something.
ReplyDeleteOthers to jump two levels include Sandoval, Jonathan Sanchez, Lincecum.
And, of course, he has to do well in order to close the deal, but still, I think that this signifies a serious intent by the Giants to promote him to be the backup, as they very rarely promote any prospect up two levels, heck, there's probably been more times where I wondered why a player was promoted.
Also, now that SJ won their first half championship, do you think Brown will finally get promoted to AA? Or do you think the Giants might be bypassing promoting him for now because of the cold that seems to be lingering across U.S. this season? But it is not like Juan Perez is doing anything there to hold back Brown, so that would not be one reason.
Yes, great article on Vogelsong, thanks for sharing bacci. I shudder to think "what if he ended up pitching for LAD?" Cause they really needed pitching, even with all the guys they picked up, they still could have used him this season, could be different between us and them right now in standings.
Oh, should have finished my thought: I looked up Sanchez's numbers, and really not that great for California League, even accounting for age, though at least it is good, unlike a lot of our other prospects (coincidentally most of the poorly performing hitters in AA), so I see no reason why he would get promoted to AA, let alone AAA, most of the time Giants would just leave player at current league then promote for next season.
ReplyDeleteSo why promote? I looked for info on Sanchez and the only one I could find (BA don't even consider him a top prospect, which I think will bite them in end again like it did with them leaving Sandoval off) was DrB, which noted his good defense.
Offensively, while the numbers are not great on surface, one must realize that he was much younger than the competition most of the time, so that will dampen his numbers. If you are looking for a star, he is not one in the making, based on the numbers.
But if you are looking for a steady player who can provide defense, he looks like he could be that guy. As non-shiny his stats are overall, batting line wise, he's been pretty good at avoiding the strikeouts, given the age difference, so I think he eventually would make it to majors and be at least replacement level with his hitting, as hitters who can avoid strikeouts can provide some offensively value.
Which leads me to think he's coming up for defensive purposes, perhaps to prepare him to be the backup in 2012 and maybe eventual replacement for Posey, should things go that way.
Great write-up OCG, thanks.
ReplyDeleteIf they are looking for a DEFENSIVE guy, why not just go with Williams? He reportedly has ++ defense already, and has "paid his dues" by playing at all levels (although, granted, not well). Also, moving forward with Williams would not expose a legit prospect like Sanchez.
Too bad Monell has laid an egg this year. He would have been the obvious choice...
Bacci, finally got a chance read the Vogelsong article. Thanks again for the link. Great piece. Man, got to love that he wanted to come back here. Still no insight in what has changed with Vogelsong for this run. From what I see now compared to what people were saying before, he is just hitting his spots much more consistently, staying out of the heart of the zone. His curve was biting tonight well tonight and he was keeping the fastball down or well-elevated.
ReplyDeleteGotta agree with Calsnow on the OCG comments here. They are a good read.
There are some players that get jumped 2 levels to fill open roster spots. They are called organizational players. The Sanchez promotion was not for organizational purposes. He's a prospect. The Giants think he has a chance to move up to the big club early. That may be a bit of irrational exuberance on their part, but yes, they are a bit desperate since Buster went down. Sanchez' overall numbers at SJ weren't so great for the Cal League, but he had been very hot over the last month or so.
