Down on the Farm: 6/6//2011

AAA Las Vegas 51's edged the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3:

Brad Eldred(DH)- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .290.

Not a lot to see here.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

A+ San Jose Giants trounced the Stockton Ports 7-1:

Tommy Joseph(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .237.
Wendell Fairley(LF)- 2 for 3. BA= .266.
Carter Jurica(SS)- 2 for 4, SB(5). BA= .248.
Barry Zito(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 1.35.

Jurica is 7 for 13 in his last 3 games. The 0 BB's is the part of Zito's line I like the best. 84-88? I wonder if the average was closer to 88 or 84?

Low A Augusta Greenjackets topped the Charleston River Dogs 2-1:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 1 for 3, BB, SB(24). BA= .278.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.36.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.66.

Rosin has pitched out of the bullpen ever since his last start was truncated by a rain delay. Strange.

DSL Giants game was suspended after 3 innings.

  1. No way man! Your boy Ricky just got picked in Round 3 to SF. You've been tooting your horn on him long enough, maybe some Giants big wigs read the blog :)

  2. the zito report

he is healthy, he was using all his pitches and threw strikes...his velocity was consistently at 84-88

he will get pummeled by major league hitters when he comes back, who will lay off the breaking stuff and crush his bp fastball

    the giants have a problem

  3. giants also got susac

to me, depending on if they can sign their draftees, seems like a solid draft

as an aside, you might wanna check out csn, cuz urban went to stockton, got interviews with zito, hector and wheeler

wouldve been nice if csn had sprung for a translator for hector's interview

  4. That is so cool that they drafted your boy Ricky. The fact that you work with his mom is also really awesome.

  6. Pretty stoked the Giants drafted my man Ricky. Kind of neat that I've been huge on him for so long(I really think he is going to be very good independent of the fact that I work with his mom), and it looks like the Giants scouts think the same thing. Man, when I saw that pick come across the Draft Tracker, I was high fiveing everybody in the office!

  7. Awesom Doc. Really looking forward to some of your analysis on some of these guys. Looks like the Giants drafted some live arms with some control/mechanics issues, which I love because the system has developed some awesome arms despite their unlofty draft (Romo/Wilson).

  8. Wow, so you really KNOW Oropesa, seen him up close. I'm getting really jazzed about his chances, seems like he's in same boat as Brandon Crawford a few years back, did well in Sophomore year, but had poor Junior year, and fell back to third/fourth round.

Mom must have been really excited as well!

FYI, Jazzhands, the reason Wilson fell back so far was that he had TJS before the draft, so people weren't sure what they were going to get with him after he recovered. Not sure he would have been a first rounder - probably not - but he was highly regarded, from what I recall, except the TJS pushed him back. He had the high velocity fastball plus a great curve, which for some reason he never went back to afterward, which makes me suspect that he blames that for his TJS, else why did he abandon a pitch that he was considered plus for before the injury? Anybody remember more?

  9. Yes, I've worked with Rickey's mom for several years. She knew I was a huge baseball fan and followed the minor leagues and the draft. She mentioned that her son played baseball for Etiwanda HS. I knew that was close to where Isaac Galloway, who was BA's to HS junior at the time. I asked her if she had seen Galloway play. She said she had then started telling me all about him and about Ricky and the Urban Youth Academy. I looked up Ricky's HS stats and realized that even though Gallloway had the dazzling speed that scouts love, Ricky was a much better hitters and the hit tool is the most important. I've followed his career ever since hoping the Giants might draft him some day, never dreaming that it might actually happen. I've met Ricky a couple of times and he gave me an autographed copy of his AFLAC All-American baseball card.

I think there is a good chance he will play for San Jose next year. It will be a great experience to see him on the So Cal swings and root for him as a Giants prospect.
