Game Wrap 6/19/2011: A's 2 Giants 1

Well, THAT was disappointing! Matt Cain, once again, pitched his heart out and was rewarded with a big no-decision and a team loss due to an increasingly inept Giants offense. Key Lines:

Andres Torres- 0 for 4. BA= .236. Torres looks totally lost at the plate.

Aaron Rowand- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .245. Rowand had the lone XBH and RBI for the Giants driving in Nate all the way from 1B on a double down the LF line in the second inning. The Giants managed just one baserunner after the third inning.

Brandon Crawford- 0 for 3. Crawford hit the ball sharply twice. Conor Jackson made a diving stop on one at 1B and the other went right at Adam Rosales' glove at 3B.

Matt Cain- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.44. Cained again! At least he won me the WHIP category for my fantasy baseball team.

Despite the L and series sweep to the A's, the Giants maintained their 0.5 game lead in the NL West over the Dangerous D'Backs who lost to the ChiSox 8-2. The Rockies stayed 3.5 games back after getting blown out by Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers. The Dodgers gained a game to 7.5 behind with a 1-0 win over the 'Stros. The Padres stayed 9.5 games back and in last place on a walk-off loss to the Twins 5-4.

The Giants get a much needed day off to regroup the start a 6 game homestand against the aforementioned Twins who are coming off a sweep of the Padres and might be the hottest team in baseball and now have Joe Mauer back. Madison Bumgarner starts game 1 on Tuesday night against Carl Pavano.

  2. just got a tweet from kroon

he is still the official closer, but tweaked something the other night...that is why he isnt closing

what is it with ballplayers and refusing to admit if you are hurt?

  3. Why would pitching as a set up man be any less detrimental to an injury than closing? Just asking.

  4. kroon has been shut down the past 2 days

not sure why he was used in non save situations in the games before...would have to ask decker about that

  6. Hey, DrB, THT's Giants fan writer stole your alliteration idea and did that with the NL West teams in today's post on NL West.

Yeah, disappointing, but they key thing is that the Giants are still on top and going home for 6 games, maybe they can make up for that there.

I'm increasingly coming to conclusion it is the media that gets fans down and raving mad about the offense (or whatever knee-jerk reaction one might have about the Giants situation). Neither the media nor these fans realize that is how it works when you have a pitching staff this great, you will win tight games, you will lose tight games.

This has been true for a long time now and Giants have produced enough offense to win regularly with that pitching for a number of years now, but like villagers storming the gate with pitchforks, the media has been stirring them up.

It just reminds me that when the media asked what the Giants plans were post-Bonds, and had no idea, it was clear then, and as you DrB noted in your great AFW article, it was clear back to early 2000's, that pitching, pitching, and more pitching were the Giants plans post-Bonds, during Bonds.

  7. OGC, that's kind of funny about someone else stealing that alliteration idea. They obviously must have been reading this blog because I haven't seen anyone else doing that. I'll have to check it out.

Not sure the Giants have enough offense right now, but that is due to the crazy rash of injuries. Take away the injuries or even just half of the injuries and this team would have plenty of offense. It's not just Buster and Freddy. Most players coming back from an extended stay on the DL have an adjustment period to get their swing and timing back. Almost like spring training all over again except the opposing pitchers are in mid-season form. So yeah teh injuries to Sandoval Torres, Ross and Belt are big setbacks too.

  8. Hah! My nicknames for the NL West teams are better than the ones that guy on THT came up with if I may say so myself.
