Game Wrap 6/9/2011: Reds 3 Giants 0

The Giants wasted another very strong pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner as the offense managed just 4 hits off Johnny Cueto. Key Lines:

Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.23. If anything, Bum has been the Giants most consistently good starter. When I see his name on the schedule, I am confident they are going to get a well pitched game. What I'm not confident of is getting a Win, which is absolutely no fault of Bumgarner's.

The ump squeezed Cueto early and the Giants still couldn't get anything going. It's fast getting to the point of ridiculousness how bad the Giants offense is. Sandoval will help, but they need more than 1 hitter to step up. Moves need to be made, but what? Go back to Burrell and Rowand? Trade away the farm for hitters that may or may not help? Tough situation.

A sliver of good news(not that it means anything for this year): Buster Posey drove himself to the ballpark, so must be starting to feel better. Word has been that he's been in a lot of pain.

Rent got his WS ring before the game along with a nice ovation from the fans and a chant of MVP on his first AB. Oh my! Has Rent ever packed on some serious poundage! Seriously, I'm not sure he doesn't outweigh Pablo right now!

With the Loss, the Giants lead in the NL West dropped to 1 game as the second place D'Backs blanked the Pirates 2-0. The Rockies topped the Dodgers 9-7 and are now in 3'rd place 4.5 games behind the Giants. The Dodgers dropped into a last place tie with the Padres, who beat the Nats 7-3, 6.5 games behind the leaders.

Ryan Vogelsong tries to keep the magic going tonight. Man, I forgot about him when I said Bumgarner has been the Giants most consistent starter. The Giants have 4 #1 starters right now with Sanchez at least a #3. What an amazing pitching staff and what an amazingly terrible offense!

  1. doc, you pointed out that the giants were facing the reds ace...in fact, he is their only consistent pitcher...and he was on, despite an early, tiny kzone

not really sure why a hit and run was called for when he couldnt throw strikes...bochy is panicking...

im loving these games...i have never seen a giants pitching staff like this...i pray that sabean doesnt trade any (unless it means that kroon will get a call)

sj clinched last nite, so unless they want the guys to play in the as game, we should see movement by this weekend

  2. I hope Bumgarner is not getting too frustrated. If we could score just 2 runs a game for him he would be 7-3. All of his starts he has 3 earned runs or less. Statistically he is one of the best picthers in the NL. It is the wins and losses where people get caught up with.

I heard that Hector Sanchez got moved up to AAA. If he can be half as good as he is in San Jose, then Whiteside has something to worry about. Sanchez has been tearing up pitching with 8 homers and 46 rbi's. With the performance of Gary Brown, will he get a promotion soon? Heath Hembree?

  3. The RBI numbers in SJ are an aberration. That team is/was stacked, so team-leaning stats should be somewhat ignored. The .301 / 8 is nice, though. The Cal league is offensive minded, though, so those numbers are not Earth-shattering.

We will see how he does in Fresno and what Decker has to say about the kid. If he is able to provide average defense and a .220 avg with 10 HRs, that is an improvement over what we have at catcher right now.

  4. Hector is throwing out 42% of runners and hitting well. With the offense and defense Whiteside and Stewart bring to the table he wouldn't have to produce much. He hits a few homers in Fresno and I say DFA Stewart and start giving him a chance. It seems like Posey might move to first next year so we should be grooming a replacement. Whiteside is not the answer. I would much rather take a gamble on Sanchez or Joseph.

  5. Joseph ABSOLUTELY is not ready. He reportedly has - defense, and, while he has the potential of a GREAT bat, it still is not really even ready for AA yet, let alone AAA or MLB.

  6. Bacci,

Let's can the "Bochy is panicking" talk, OK? If we've learned anything about Bruce Bochy as a manager it's that he doesn't panic. If he was really prone to panicking, do you really think the players would have been behind him all this time? It's appropriate for him to be concerned about the offense and try to shake it up a bit.

The Giants may have gotten a bit irrationally exuberant about Sanchez. I generally don't like to see position prospects skip AA. I think it toughens them up. Kind of like going to New York, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
