These days, 3 runs is a veritable offensive explosion for the Giants. They scored their 3'rd run in this game in the bottom of the 9'th inning and it was good enough for their 9'th walk-off win of the season. The Win came at a cost, though, as Freddy Sanchez had to leave the game with a right shoulder separation. Key Lines:
Miguel Tejada- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB. BA= .229. The BB was, not surprisingly, intentional. He hit another ball hard that was caught in the OF. Miggy is hitting .295 over his last 10 games and this was his second consecutive game with 2 doubles. He has a 7 game hitting streak in which he is 10 for 28. Some folks may have written Miggy's obituary for his Giants career a bit prematurely.
Cody Ross- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .267. I like Cody Ross, but when Cody Ross is your cleanup hitter, you've got to be just a little concerned.
Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 1. BA= .260. Man, Nate is just fearless up there in these situations! Yet another clutch walk-off base hit. I wonder if maybe when he's starting, he's trying to do too much? Here, he knows all he needs to do is hit a single and the game is over.
Brandon Crawford- 0 for 3. BA= 234. Crawford was pressed into service when Sanchez went down. His 3 AB's looked weak and his BA is sinking down to Richmond levels. He still has value for his D and it's probably too early to write off his offense, but gotta be concerned about whether he's ready for the long haul.
Freddy Sanchez- 1 for 2. BA= .289. Freddy injured his R shoulder on a diving, skidding defensive stop in the 5'th inning. Gotta think this is going to keep him out awhile. Let's hope he didn't tear his rotator cuff in the process. Burriss will probably fill in until Fonty comes off the DL, but neither of those players is Freddy Sanchez. Wow! The injuries just keep piling up!
Ryan Vogelsong- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 1.81. Vogey was not as dominant in this one as his last start, but the Reds lineup is real tough. He held them at bay long enough to give his team a chance to win.
Jeremy Affeldt- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.21. Affeldt has been much better over his last 10 appearances with an ERA of 2.31, 11 K's and just 1 BB over 11.2 IP. He's whittled his ERA down from 5.28. Jeremy Affeldt back in top form could be a huge factor as the season progresses.
Sergio Romo- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.33. Romo has 16 K's and just 2 BB's in his last 9 IP. A 7'th, 8'th and 9'th inning combo of Affeldt, Romo and Wilson seems to be taking shape.
Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, W(5-1). ERA= 2.79. Bochy has exclusively used Wilson in the top of the 9'th in tie games at home which has resulted in Willie collecting 5 of the Giants 9 walk-off wins. Oh, must be a tough life being the closer for a championship team. BWeezy made an appearance with a bunch of Victoria's Secret models to introduce a line of Giants themed undergarments and sleepwear on Thursday.
The Win enabled the Giants to again stretch their lead in the NL West to 2 games over the Dangerous D'Backs who lost to the Marlins 6-4. The Rockies held off the Desperate Dodgers 6-5 to stay in 3'rd place, 4.5 games off the pace while the Dodgers stayed tied with the Pathetic Padres who lost to the Nats, 2-1 to drop 7.5 games out of the lead.
Tim Lincecum tries to keep it going this afternoon against Mike Leake. Timmy's been a bit off his game lately. The Reds lineup will be a challenge.

bill hall? he couldnt hit dingers in that houston band box? he is a utility guy
ReplyDeletesabean finally broke...happens to the best of us
btw doc...this is why you should tweet...rosenthal broke the news on the hall signing...4 hours ago...when most sane people are sleeping...
ReplyDeletesorry for running on
ReplyDeletein his post game, song said that his warmups went great, but then he got on the mound and couldnt get comfortable...second time that has happened...he is like the princess and the pea
the freddie injury hit him hard...you could see it in his eyes and demeanor on the mound...he confirmed this after the game
you should watch it..its on csn
Sabean finally broke? Bacci, whathehell is wrong with you anyway? Signing Hall costs the Giants $300 K. They'll either catch lightning in a bottle or they'll release him with no skin lost. Did you say Sabean "finally broke" when he signed Pat Burrell last year?
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm not going to waste my time on Twitter just so I can find out the Giants signed Bill Hall 4 hours earlier!
well...pat was insurance, as he was given a minor league contract
ReplyDeletei think hall is coming straight to the giants...but ya...it doesnt cost anything...so i guess its a good dumpster dive move
what i found out from this move is...neither sabean nor rosenthal need sleep
are they vampires?
Appreciate the comments anyway, Bacc.
ReplyDeletetejada got an unintentional walk too
ReplyDeletecrawford gidp'd on a well hit groundball and got loogyd in the ninth
burrell looks awful when he isn't walking
what's up with pitchers and mounds? Lincecum had that earlier too
Interesting we signed Bill Hall... His approach at the plate reminds me a lot of a cross between Panda and Tejada himself... at this stage in his career, he just may be a poor man's Miguel Tejada (CRAP!). He generates a lot of bat speed, which is a recipe for swing and miss tendencies.
ReplyDeleteEither way, I agree with you Doc, a veteran presence in a lineup for a prorated minimum is hardly a risk. As soon as Freddy got hurt though, I did catch myself wondering what kind of defense Brett Pill can play? Obviously the Giants know more than I do and didn't consider that an option for 2B...

ReplyDeletemore than any player, pitchers are creatures of habit...starting very early in their careers
even small changes to their routines, can set them off
so they notice things like if the ball doesnt feel right, or there are even tiny differences in the mounds
song didnt look comfortable...but he battled...it was the freddie injury that really messed him up...and yet, he still held it together...really amazing
study of polar opposites
song talks a lot about focus and concentration
nate says that his success at the plate has come from him not thinking at all
pretty cool
Hall did hit .247 with 18 HR's just last season. Those are Juan Uribe numbers! The Houston clubhouse can't be the most pleasant place to be a ballplayer, especially after you've played Boston. Who knows, maybe there's some positive essence that permeates the Giants clubhouse that temporarily revives these guys. Man, I'd take .247 with 18 HR's out of a 2B replacement picked up off the scrap heap!
ReplyDeleteAgreed Doc. Never know how a player will respond, especially in a situation where the Giants might need him to catch fire just to stay afloat. Some players thrive when expectations are extremely high and I doubt Bill Hall has been in that situation before... For the amount of money it will cost, I'd say it isn't even a calculated risk, there is no risk at all.
