Game Wrap 6/7/2011: Nationals 2 Giants 1

The Giants scored first for a change in this one, but could not muster any more runs against a quality pitcher. Jonathan Sanchez had a typical Jonathan Sanchez start. Good enough to get a W in most games, but not this one.

Aubrey Huff- 1 for 4, 3B. BA= .221.

Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .262.

Jonathan Sanchez- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.51.

Bullpen- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.

The main controversy of this game seems to be why Bochy did not have Torres sacrifice after Cody Ross led off the 8'th inning with a walk. Fact: MLB teams score 1 run more often with a runner on first and no outs than with a runner on second and 1 out.

Well, that's about it. Not much to say about this one. The Giants don't generate much offense against average pitching. This is about as much as you can expect when they go up against good pitching right now.

Despite the Loss, the Giants were able to stay 1 game ahead of the D'Backs in the NL West as the Pirates beat the Snakes 8-5. The Dodgers topped the Phils 6-2 to gain a game to 5.5 behind in third place while Colorado stayed at 5.5 games deficit with a 3-0 loss to the Padres who are in last place 6.5 games back.

Matt Cain takes the mound against newcomer Yuniesky Maya tomorrow afternoon.

  1. Yeah, sabermetrics has shown for many years now that sacrificing to advance the runner at 1B is tantamount to sacrificing your chances to score. The key rule to remember is that outs are precious, you don't want to give them away easily.

Bochy has had this strategy for years not, if not forever, which was one reason I thought that perhaps he has a sabermetric bent that he don't share with the public.

Lannan is actually not that average. High 3 ERA in 3 of 4 seasons, that's pretty good for a pitcher, makes him either average #2 starter or pretty good #3 starter for most teams. He is one of those guys who pitch above his poor peripherals, like Rueter, and turn in good overall performances generally. Guys like that will have good starts regularly, whether poor offenses like Giants or good offenses like St. Louis.

Ugh, new guy seems to always handcuff Giants.

  2. Ooops! My bad, Lannan was prior game. Had bad night's sleep, probably shouldn't be trying to think. :^)

  3. Oh, I absolutely think Bochy has a saber metric bent. That's the reason he also does not steal much except when he has a high probability of success and he's playing for one run late in the game.
