Down on the Farm: 6/17//2011

AAA Sacramento River Cats came from behind to pass the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5:

Darren Ford(CF)- 2 for 4. BA= .316.
Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .293.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .308.
Matt Yourkin(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.70.
Vinnie Chulk(RHP, River Cats)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, W(3-2). ERA= 2.97.

Yup, THAT Vinnie Chulk! Ford starts a rehab assignment. Unclear if he'll get called back to SF when it's done. Conor Gillaspie and Hector Sanchez keep hitting. Gotta be getting a bit excited about Sanchez, in particular.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Bowie Baysox 6-4:

Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 1 for 4, 3B. BA= .256.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .125.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .227.
David Quinowski(LHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.01.

A+ Modesto Nuts crushed the San Jose Giants 10-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, Assist(3B). BA= .335.
Alex Burg(3B-C)- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .462.
Kelvin Marte(LHP)- 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 2.93.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.79.

Brown has been in enough of a slump to get mention on BA's "Not So Hot" list. This was Marte's worst start of the season so far.

Low A August Greenjackets smothered the Asheville Tourists 15-5:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 4 for 6, 2B. BA= .266.
Devin Harris(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(9), HJBP, SF. BA= .228.
Ryan Scoma(DH)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .247.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(3), BB. BA= .230.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K'S, Save(1). ERA= 3.83.
Tyler Matzek(LHP, Tourists)- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 8 R, 6 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 14.00.

Adrianza is hitting .282/.341/.436 over his last 10 games, 8 for 23 in his last 6. Not sure how he got credit for a Save entering the game with a 12-5 lead, but my man Seth Rosin had a dominant outing. He has 10 K's against 1 BB in 6 IP his last 2 outings. The wheels have completely fallen off for Tyler Matzek, a former first round draft pick for the Rockies. He was recently demoted from the Cal League and is even worse at the lower level.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes exploded for a 14-2 win over the Spokane Indians:

Jesus Galindo(CF-RF)- 0 for 5, BB, SB(1). BA= .000.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 5, BB. BA= .400.
Dan Burkhart(C)- 2 for 6, 2B. BA= .333.
Mike Murray(DH)- 5 for 6, 2B, HR(1). BA= .833.
Chuckie Jones(LF)- 3 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, HBP. BA= 1.000!
Brett Krill(RF)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .250.
John Eshleman(3B)- 2 for 6, 2B, SB(1). BA= .333.
Julio Izturis(2B)- 2 for 6, SB(1). BA= .333.
Cameron Lamb(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 9/2. ERA= 1.80.
Aaron King(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Lots of stuff going on here. Galindo is a slap and dash guy from the DSL who stole a lot of bases but had trouble keeping his BA above the Mendoza Line. He's off to a similar start here. Solid start for first round draft pick Panik. Gotta love Chuckie Jones who reached base 6 times in the game! Brett Krill is a sleeper drafted in a late round last year out of UCLA. He's big and looks unathletic but is surprisingly fast and has a great arm for RF. Cameron Lamb was signed as a 17 yo out of Australia back in 2007. He's been hampered by rawness and injuries. He's 22 yo now. This could be his make or break year. We'll see if Aaron King can find a floor here and start to rebuild his career which has been derailed by wildness.

DSL Angels blanked the Giants 4-0.

Nothing to see here.

  2. From 10.19, quoted in part:

The official scorer shall credit a pitcher with a save when such pitcher meets all four of the following conditions:
    (a) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;
    (b) He is not the winning pitcher;
    (c) He is credited with at least a third of an inning pitched; and
    (d) He satisfies one of the following conditions:...or
    (3) He pitches for at least three innings.

A "3 inning save", shall we say.

  3. Really excited about Chuckie Jones. Hope he keeps it up and we see him display some power numbers before too long! Also, it is great to see a 1st round pick playing only days from when he was drafted!

  4. Listened to the Grizzlies game. I think we can be relieved that Sanchez is indeed a pretty decent glove behind the plate. Kroon was bouncing the ball to him that last inning like a point guard. Folks Kroon should have left and taken Daigle with him. I pray nothing happens to any of the pitchers on the big team because there is miniscule help at Fresno. Otero looks interesting but Richmond is probably the best real hope.

  5. im not exactly sure what decker was doing last night

he tried to stretch daigle into a second inning, even though he had 2 new arms up from richmond

then, in a road game, he brought in his closer, who had control probs the game before, in a tie game

not sure what is wrong with kroon....a full month of almost perfection and he has lost the touch of his pitches

but he lost on a 20 foot squib that no one could field

murray likes to tweet, so we should get some good insight on what is going on in salk this season

olney tweeted that the internet has increased interest in prospects..but had to add a tag line that it didnt mean increased success for any of them...what a stick in the mud

educated fans go to watch the games...the internet has been good for the game...i would suggest that it has been better for baseball than any other sport, as baseball remains the most under reported sport out of all the majors

    time to watch the cws...

  6. Great comments everybody!

Not sure I agree with Olney that the increased interest in prospects hasn't helped more succeed. I don't have the stats on it, but it seems like more prospects are making and making it quicker than I can remember. There's a cascade effect here: The fans have more interest in prospects, that puts some pressure on the MLB club to give those prospects a chance because, hey, if the fans like it maybe they will come out to the park or buy the MLB package so they can see this kid they've been following in the minors play in the majors. The more kids who get that kind of a chance, the more are going to succeed. Make no mistake, there are prospects out there who DON'T get that chance would could have played in the majors if they had. The increased interest helps, I'm sure of it.

I will say though Bacci, I'm a lot more interested in watching minor league games from the standpoint of seeing prospects play than in the outcomes of the games themselves.

  7. Yes, thank you DrB for great coverage!!!

What are your thoughts on Hanchez? Any chance he comes up, say, just after ASB to majors to share starting playing time with Eli?

Yeah, not sure who would go down for Ford when he is ready...

  8. mathis opted out...signed with the a's

with their pitching injuries, it was a good move for mathis...who has done well in aaa

i think that kroon has been moved to setup role, and otero is now the closer for fresno

wonder how this will affect kroon and his future with the org

  9. At this point, I think Hector Sanchez is more of an emergency option, but If he continues to play well for Fresno and if Whitey and CStew continue to hurt the team with poor play, we could see him before the season is over. Not sure when though.

I saw that Mathis was released, I guess it was by his choice? I would think if Otero is the closer at Fresno, he's moved ahead of Marc Kroon in the depth chart. Not sure why Kroon is still hanging in there.
