Whew! What a game! The Giants have played some very entertaining games this season, but perhaps none more so than this one as they won a see-saw battle in extra-innings punctuated by a mysterious lighting outage just before the final out. Key lines:
Miguel Tejada- 0 for 6. BA= .210. I post this one because the line looks terrible but Miggy hit the ball hard several times, just right at fielders.
Freddy Sanchez- 3 for 6, 2 2B. BA= .298. Freddy was smoking the ball, showing off his Batting Title form.
Aubrey Huff- 1 for 4, HR(5), BB. BA= .219. Huffster looked terrible in his first 3 AB's but then smoked a HR that gained the Giants a temporary 4-3 lead in the 7'th inning. He later walked and was lifted for pinch runner Emmanuel Burriss which payed off with Burriss stealing 2b and coming home on Nate's single to CF. Burriss stayed in and played 1B and played it well. There was one play where Crawford's throw was a bit up line and the ump said Burriss pulled his foot and called the runner safe. On replays, the ESPN announcers though he kept his foot on the bag, but I think he as off by less than 1 inch and the ump made the right call. I'm guessing if it was Pujols, the runner would have been called out though.
Nate Schierholtz- 3 for 6. BA= .274. Nate came up with 2 very clutch singles, one to tie it in the 9'th inning and another to to drive in the go-ahead run in the 11'th.
Cody Ross- 4 for 6, 2B, BB, SB(3). BA= .267. Cody had been in a mini-slump, but now has 7 hits in his last 3 games. He certainly peppered the field tonight. I'm thinking the Giants best OF configuration is Nate in RF, Torres in CF and Ross in LF. Stick with that for awhile and see if a chemistry can develop. It's also the best defensive OF configuration.
Brandon Crawford- 2 for 6. BA= .333. Crawford had another nice night at the plate, and his defense is a breath of fresh air, close-call throwing error notwithstanding.
Eli Whiteside- 2 for 4, BB, SF. A terrific game by Whiteside too, It seemed like he did something good at the plate every time up. He also threw out one runner and probably should have had another if Crawford could have held onto the ball to tag Rasmus.
Tim Lincecum- 6.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 2.59. On the surface it looks like Timmy was off tonight, but look at the K's and BB's. The hits in the 7'th inning were smoked but pretty much all of the earlier ones were seeing eye GB's, dinkers and dunkers. That is a very unlucky line for Timmy! He had terrific stuff!
Bullpen- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. Maybe the bullpen was a bit lucky, but they ended up shutting down the Cards' offense once Timmy left the game.
The W enabled the Giants to keep pace with the Dangerous Dangerous D'Backs who came from behind to edge the Marlins 6-5 to maintain their 0.5 game lead. The Rockies blanked the Dodgers behind Ubaldo Jimenez to gain sole possession of 3'rd place, 4.5 games behind the D'Backs with the Dodgers falling 5.5 games back. The Padres lost to ATL 4-3 to fall 7 games behind in last place in the NL West.
Jonathan Sanchez will try to make it a 3-1 series win tomorrow. The listed starter for the Cardinals is Jaime Garcia, but the team has announced that Kyle McClellan is being place on the DL with a hip flexor strain suffered in the first inning of game 1 of this series. Lance Lynn is being called up and will make his MLB debut tomorrow pitching on 3 days rest from his last minor league start. Strange! I've liked Lynn since he was in college though so it should be in interesting matchup, but one the Giants would seem to have a good chance of winning.

for the first time in two years, whiteside looked a little lost behind the dish, and i chalk that up to his not having caught timmy all that much in the past...those two wp's should have been passed balls
ReplyDeletebaggs tweeted that bochy is going to give nate lots more playing time...no matter what nate does at the plate....this team needs the best of defense out there...you can get away with avg if d....but bad of d, costs doubles and triples (and the occasional inside the park hr)
nates at bat with 2ks on him was....delicious
look...when was the last time burriss played at first...the ump shouldve given him the out for being a gamer
ya...miggs hit the ball hard...i dont care
when pablo gets back...he goes to the bench
when fontenot returns....you gotta make a trade or dfa him and eat the salary...the giants cannot afford not having at least one guy to pinch run in the late innings...either burriss or ford have gotta be on this squad for the duration
nates heroics notwithstanding...burriss doesnt take second...they dont score
tim had good stuff...but he tired by the 7th...and i really think that bochy needs to rethink his allowing any of his pitchers to go above 120 pitches the rest of the year...they just threw too many innings last season
crawford stays...they cant find his hole...and he has range, a good glove, soft hands, good arm strength, and a very good sense of the field
crawford gives the club more options when it comes to the trade deadline...so he has gotta stay up
the sj club is crowing, noting that 9 of the 2009 club have now made it to the bigs...thats not bad
bochy used the pen much better tonite..although i think he stuck with timmy one batter too many after the dinger
lynn is/was in the top 10 of prospects in the cards org....dont know where he stands now, as even after a full season in the pcl, they chose to keep him there to start the season
he is the kind of pitcher larussa likes...heavy sinker...but his fast ball is avg and his offspeed stuff shouldnt blow anyone off the plate
3 days rest? they dont have anyone else in memphis? they handled the fresno lineup pretty well
oh...kroon is staying
ReplyDeletepeguero starts rehab in sj tomorrow
I guess Whiteside made up for being lost behind the dish with his bat tonight. I don't know, Bacci. I don't remember the other one, but the WP on the K was a really tough pitch for any catcher to handle. It could have gone either way.
ReplyDeleteYeah, even if Tejada gets hot, might be too little too late. He ain't gonna play 3B ahead of Pablo and I'd say Crawford has already earned a prolonged stint at SS at the very least. Miggy might have been Wally Pipped by another player's injury!
I don't know how many teams keep a speed guy just for pinch running duties, but Bochy seems to have figured out how to make it a real weapon. How many games have been won by either Ford or Burriss pinch-running? That's the type of strategy that will really work if you have great pitching and play a lot of tight, low-scoring games.
Wow! Lot's of great stuff in Extra Baggs. Go check it out! I'm especially impressed that Bruce Bochy has any idea who Todd Jennings is/was. Either Boch has a great memory in that huge melon of his, or he's really done his research to make the case for rule changes/enforcement on home plate collisions.
ReplyDeleteOne more thought(BTW, those were great comments, Bacci. You're on fire with 'em right now!): I still think Nate Schierholtz will end up being an above average offensive RF, but it was working hard on his defensive skills, turning his speed and rocket arm into defensive weapons that maintained his toehold in the majors. The D was just too valuable even when he couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag. Todd Linden is a guy who had all the same tools, maybe even better, but never worked at developing them into skills. Nate is going to have the major league career that Todd Linden could have had because of it.
ReplyDeleteOne more: The explanation for why Jaime Garcia got bumped back and the Cards are throwing Lynn in the fire on 3 days rest is that Garcia threw over 100 pitches in 4+ innings his last outing and complained of fatigue afterward. They're giving him an extra day off.
ReplyDeletelast night, i decided to check out some vids on crawford hitting in the eastern....not sure how it happened, but he has changed his entire approach at the plate...and his swing has become much shorter and more compact
ReplyDeletegood points on linden and nate
maybe it was a good thing that the org kept nate guessing as to what his status was
again, i dont ever think that nate is going to be a star...but he is a solid of, with gold glove caliber d, and when healthy, good enough hitting to get it done
dont need the dingers....just need to move the line
he is seeing the ball well....and they have to play the hot hand
you know, we are getting very close to seeing a majority homegrown position player team...and that bodes well for this orgs future
Nate is already a star. The league knows about the arm. Rememer what Cousins said? Seen alot of Nate from ESPN blips here and there. HoF, my guess would be Not.
