Game Wrap 6/8/2011: Giants 3 Nationals 1

The Giants got a dominating complete game start from Matt Cain and once again scratched out enough runs for the Win. Key Lines:

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .268. Tremendous AB leading up to the triple off a LHP. Crawford made a dazzling play to limit the damage and hold the Nats lone rally to 1 run.

Eli Whiteside- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .190. White side made up for a couple of poor throws to 2B on SB's by the Nats with his bat, scoring the first run after he went back-to-back doubles with Cain, and then driving in Crawford with an insurance run.

Matt Cain- 1 for 3, 2B. As he occasionally does, CAiner just decided to do it all himself today!

Matt Cain- 9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 11 K's! ERA= 3.36. Cainer has become more of a contact pitcher of late, but he brought his swing and miss stuff today, thanks to a great curveball that complemented his usual great FAA all that he had up to 94 MPH. What a tremendous effort!

Laynce Nix(Nats)- 0 for 4. BA= .284. I drove up to a meeting in Sausilito today and listened to the game on KNBR. What a great experience! It brought back memories of listening to Russ and Lon back in my youth. Anyway, you could hear the crowd chanting in the background, "Whatsamatta with Laynce?" "THERE'S NO Y!". LOL! Jon Miller and Dave Fleming picked up on it and were joking around. "There are parts of the country where Lance is pronounced Laynce. They're just using the phonetic spelling." LOL! So, where is Laynce Nix from? Texas! I nearly wrecked the car I laughed so hard!

With the W, the Giants gained a full game on the second place D'Backs to 2 games as the Snakes lost to Pirates 3-2 in extra innings. Colorado blanked the Padres and the Dodgers lost to the Phils 2-0.

Madison Bumgarner takes the mound tomorrow evening against the Cincinnati Reds and Johnny Cueto, who is as close as the Reds have to an ace.

  1. I listen to Jon and Dave every game. I use the MLB.TV, cut down the volume and listen to the audio. K & K are fine but Jon and Dave are the best... Better than Dizzy and PeeWee.

Nice that Crawford just came uptown and took the job. I hope he spends a career there. Brandon has impressed me with the bat. I Knew he had the glove.

Best of all was Whitey getting a couple needed hits. I'm a little puzzled that he just can't throw anyone out. That might be the achilles heel.

Buy your Tejada shirt because he will be gone real soon. So sad seeing such a great player trying to restore the gold. He's rich enough.

Still got the prayers going for Buster. A catcher, pitching staff and a shortstop makes the baseball world go around.

  2. Yeah, Whiteside already has tongues wagging on his suspect D. Those two throws today were REALLY poor. I don't remember who was running on the Hit and Run, but he should have been out by 5 feet. And that was the good throw.

I want Whiteside to work. Otherwise, every single time an opposing team comes in, we have to hear about which of their catchers we need to trade for:

    Washington: Pudge
    Cincy: Hanigan

    etc. etc.

Tejada isn't leaving just yet. Like everyone, I'll be glad to see him out of the starting line-up. But Pablo's hand is sore. And it will be for a while. And I'd love for Crawford to be the man. But keep in mind, he never really hit in the minors. Tejada is going to see plenty of time on the left side. (I hope I'm wrong on that)

I keep on wondering...what happens if we start hitting? .240 on the year? We were never close to that bad in 2005-2008...

  3. If Eli is not going to pick it up, we might as well call up Williams and go with his ++ D.

  4. hilarious

from almost day 2, people were screaming that sabean needed to trade for reyes

now that crawford has come up (despite some idiots on some other blogs, demeaning his defensive skills and waiting for the other shoe to drop on his o) those voices have retreated...and are now screaming for a catcher

the last time sabean made a panic trade..the got hawkins

sabean will not be allowed to make a panic trade, as long as the giants are in, or close to first

eli is pressing...i would be too, if the i replaced one of the most important cogs in the giants machine

a move will be made, because eli is what he is...a very good backup...but it will be done at the right time, and with the correct personnel

and it should be noted that cain's best game this season, was with eli behind the dish

big test in next two games...should be fun

  5. One more comment on Cainer: He may be on the threshold of taking it to yet another level. I think it was Baggs who reported that he has been consciously working on put-away pitches to allow him to K batters earlier in the count. Splashing Pumpkins looked at method for measuring dominance and found that this was probably Cainer's most dominant start ever! We may be seeing a lot more of this kind of start in the future.
