Down on the Farm: 6/23//2011

AAA Salt Lake City Bees stung the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5:

Tyler Graham(RF)- 1 for 4, 2B, HBP. SB(35). BA= .270.
Edgar Gonzalez(3B)- 2 for 5. BA= .297.
Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 2 for 5. BA= .288.
Brett Pill(2B)- 3 for 5, 2 2B, 3B. BA= .288.
Thomas Neal(LF)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .319.
Brad Eldred(DH)- 2 for 4, HR(13). BA= .272.
Justin Dowdy(LHP)- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.93.
Marc Kroon(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.05.
Jerome Williams(RHP, Bees)- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 1.50.

Interesting that Gillaspie played 1B when they have Brett Pill playing 2B and Eldred DH'ing. Jerome Williams, a Blast From the Past, is trying to make a Ryan Vogelsong-like comeback except with the Angels. Maybe the Giants can offer him a ST invite for next season?

AA Harrisburg Senators topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2 in a game called after 8 innings:

Francisco Peguero(CF)- 0 for 4. BA- .000.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 1 for 2, BB, HBP, SB(10). BA= .252.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 1 for 3, 2B, SF. BA= .240.
Wes Hodges(1B)- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .222.
Daryl Maday(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.75.
Alex Hinshaw(LHP)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.88.

Peguero makes his AA debut.

A+ Stockton Ports edged the San Jose Giants 2-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 4, SB(33). BA= .326.
David Mixon(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 2.66.
Michael Main(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.64.
Ari Ronick(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.19.

Still cautiously hopeful about Michael Main's future.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets rained out.

Short Season Eugene Emeralds beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-2:

Joe Panik(SS)- 1 for 4. BA= .480.
Brice Cutspec(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .188.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .190.
Brandon Allen(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 1 K. ERA= 9.95.
Wilber Bucardo(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Aaron King(LHP)- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 12.60.
Stephen Shackleford(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 5.40.
Matt Andriese(RHP, Ems)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 10/1. ERA= 3.60

A Wilber Bucardo sighting!! The struggles of Brandon Allen and Matt Graham are cautionary against irrational exuberance about HS pitching draftees with raw arms. Not that I'm writing them off, but they require huge amounts of patience and the attrition rate is high. 0 BB's for King are encouraging. Andriese is a hard thrower from UC Riverside who I wouldn't have minded the Giants drafting.

Rookie AZL Giants idle.

DSL Giants box not up yet.

  1. Yeah, high school pitchers are globs of clay, waiting to be molded, and often they crack. For me the cautionary tales began with Mike Remlinger and Mark Grant and got a reminder with Roger/Craig Whitaker. Who was your first one that taught you that lesson, DrB?

Main is tantalizing, no doubt. Following your theme about irrational exuberance, I would say that Simon, that guy we got from Phillies, where I finally learned that sometimes, a hot prospect from another farm system, is not so much in our.

Yeah, the Giants apparently like Gillaspie's bat, from his short time in majors, and thus accelerating his transition to utility player. And who knows, the way the Giants use their bench, Gillaspie will get plenty of opportunity to show that he can hit well enough to hold starting job, much like Burris.

Wouldn't that be a story if Jerome came back and did well in the majors with the Giants! Better than Vogelsong, since Jerome actually pitched pretty well for the Giants before losing his way, though almost certainly not better performance than Vogelsong, his story is up there with Andres Torres in 2010, I would say.

  2. There was an outcry after the Giants passed on Tyler Matzek in favor of Zack Wheeler (although financial considerations may have played a role) but at this point Matzek looks totally lost while Wheeler is coming along quite nicely.

  3. I think we've seen enough to say that the Giants have a trend of picking out qualities in young, high school arms. Once Wheeler is able to locate the strike zone a little more regularly, he is going to fast track.

Also, in the last few years, I think the Giants were also able to pinpoint a young high school arm that just wasn't going to end up cutting it (Tim Alderson) and traded him while he still has value.

Where would we be without the staff in place that scouts then molds these pitchers?! Even guys like Romo and Wilson came from relative obscurity. Wouldn't be surprised if half the reason the Giants keep their draft thought under wraps is because they don't want anyone else knowing what they know about the characteristics of a moldable arm, which they seem to know with high frequency of late.

  4. I don't see Gillaspie hitting well enough to be a first baseman. Kind of reminds me of Tony Torcato moving to 1B. I hope for his sake that it's just to increase his versatility a little.

  5. Whats the story with Hodges? He was actually a 2nd rounder in '06, and he seems to have had at least an OK bat all the way through his minor league career. He is 26, so I am assuming he was brought in as org depth, but is there a chance he may be more?

  6. I loved Hodges as a college hitter and was hoping the Giants would draft him. I'm guessing if John Barr was the Scouting Director back then they might have. The rap seems to be that he's a tweener. Can't field well enough to play 3B, doesn't hit well enough to be a first baseman.

For now, I think he's an organizational player but one who the current Giants scouting staff likes and might break out and surprise us.

  7. Not sure what you ever saw in JValdez. No future.

  8. Hodges is an organizational player and someone who can give protection to Kiesch and Dominguez at the AA level. Nothing more. Let's not waste the cycles.

  9. Jose Valdez? Let's, 6'7" 240 lbs, 92 MPH FB? I still like him!

Let's not waste the cycles? Huh?
