Game Wrap 6/6/2011: Giants 5 Nationals 4

Well, I didn't stay up to watch the end of this one but the news this morning was a lot better than the last time I checked out early in an extra-inning game. Timmy struggled early in this one. As has become their pattern, the Giants offense did zilch for the first 6 innings against a mediocre pitcher. The offense came alive late to tie it and they went on to win it in yet another walk off in extra-innings. Key Lines:

Andres Torres- 2 for 6, BB, SB(7). BA= .264. Torres struck out with a chance to win it in the 9'th, but kept the winning rally going with a single. He reached base 3 of 7 PA's.

Freddy Sanchez- 2 for 5, 2 BB. BA= .296. Freddy scored a run earlier then drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 13'th.

Aubrey Huff- 1 for 6. BA= .221. The lone hit was a soft single to CF, but it drove in 2 runs.

Aaron Rowand- 1 for 6, HR(2). BA= .239. Rowand produced the first run in the 7'th with a solo dinger. Still, would rather see Nate in there against the LHP.

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 6. BA= .250. He didn't figure into the scoreing, but Crawford had another nice night at the plate.

Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 1. BA= .262. Yet another clutch single from Nate as a PH to tie it in the 8'th.

Tim Lincecum- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= .285. Timmy looked out of sorts out there tonight. Not sure he's in sync with Whiteside yet.

Bullpen- 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. Bullpen is nails once again. The player of this game was the collective bullpen.

With the Win, the Giants gained 0.5 games on the idle second place D'Backs to build their lead in the NL West to 1 full game. The Rockies blanked the Padres 3-0 to stay 5.5 games back in third place. The Dodgers lost to the Phils 3-1 to slide to 6.5 games behind in fourth place while San Diego fell to 7.5 games behind in last place.

Jonathan Sanchez takes the mound tonight facing a very good young pitcher in Jordan Zimmerman.

Go Giants!

  1. Crawford got the single that put Huff into scoring position for Schierholtz to tie the game. He later singled with one out and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, but was stranded.

Affeldt looked good. Well, as you said the whole pen looked good. Nats' has to be exhausted after two extra inning games in a row.

  2. Crawford makes a pitcher work. Slick in the field and earning his keep. He's set.
Timmy was at it the first 2 innings and then the shoes fell off after getting the record.
Amazing, just amazing this bullpen. Sabean and Bochy knew what they were doing while building this pitching staff.

The Panda situation is starting to bother me.

The Giants have some nasty decisions coming up really soon. Zito, Fontenot and hopefully Pablo. I think there are a few veterans getting worried...

  3. Lannan is not that mediocre a pitcher, sure, bad peripherals, but he's been able to keep ERA under 4 in 3 of 4 seasons, so he's actually a pretty good pitcher, just not ace-level, average #2 starter or very good #3 starter.
