Scouting the 2017 Draft: Day 3 Wrap

The Giants drafted a whole bunch of very large pitchers on Day 3 of the draft.  My mental picture of the war room is of scouts frantically combing through college rosters, circling any pitcher listed at 6'6" or above and calling their name the next round.  Here's the breakdown:

Round 11:  Doug Still LHP, College(Missouri St).  6'2", 205 lbs.

2017:  8-3, 2.88, 103 IP, 27 BB, 89 K.  3 pitch mix with a FB listed at 86-93 with tail and sink.

*********************************************************************************

Round 12:  Aaron Bond OF, JC(San Jacinto(TX)).  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 185 lbs.

2017:  .355/.471/.617, 10 2B, 9 HR, 23 SB, 22 BB, 33 K, 141 AB.  Love what I see here.  Great size, 5 tools.  Reminds me of Malique Zeigler one of my favorite picks from last year's draft.

*********************************************************************************

Round 13:  Tyler Schimpf RHP, College(Texas).  6'4", 207 lbs.

2017:  0-2, 1.56, 17.1 IP, 7 BB, 13 K.  Very Giantsy teen round pick.  Obviously a project, but it looks like there may be some upside here.

*********************************************************************************

Round 14:  Michael Sexton 3B, College(The Master's)(Sr).  B-L, T-R.  6'2", 225 lbs.

2017:  .394/.488/.812, 16 2B, 17 HR, 31 BB, 25 K, 165 AB.  Conner Menez and Brandon Van Horn seem to be working out pretty well so far, so the Giants go back to the well at The Master's College in Santa Clarita, CA.  Sexton looks more athletic in video than his listed size might lead you to believe.

*********************************************************************************

Round 15:  Orlando Garcia SS, College(Texas Tech).  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 190 lbs.

2017:  .305/.386/.550, 9 2B, 3 3B, 13 HR, 9 SB, 26 BB, 62 K, 220 AB.  Big SS with some power but a ton of K's.

*********************************************************************************

Round 16:  John Russell RHP, College(Connecticut).  6'3", 182 lbs.

2017:  3-2, 2.84, 38 IP, 19 BB, 66 K, 14 Saves.  College closer with a big K rate.  Big East is a fairly strong conference.

*********************************************************************************

Round 17:  Brac Warren RHP, Oregon.  6'4", 215 lbs.

2017:  1-0, 4.56, 23.2 IP, 20 BB, 28 K.  Another project for the Giants pitcher whisperers.

*********************************************************************************

Round 18:  Christopher Corbett C, College(Rollins)(Div II).  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 195 lbs.

2017:  .349/.410/.632, 10 2B, 3 3B, 9 HR, 5 SB, 17 BB, 19 K, 152 AB.  Nice numbers.  Do they translate to the pros?

*********************************************************************************

Round 19:  Frankie Tostado OF, JC(Oxnard, CA).  B-L, T-L.  6'2", 220 lbs.

I could not find any stats.  Batting practice video shows a nice swing with tremendous power potential. Looks like a 1B.  I can just imagine what the fans in AT&T Park would do with that name!

*********************************************************************************

Round 20:  Keaton Winn RHP, JC(Iowa Western).  6''4", ? lbs.

2017:  5-1, 2.47, 51 IP, 17 BB, 56 K.

*********************************************************************************

Round 21:  Logan Baldwin OF, Georgia Southern.  B-L, T-L.  6'0", 180 lbs.

2017:  .308/.370/.444, 13 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 13 SB, 16 BB, 50 K, 214 AB.  Made a highlight reel catch out of CF a couple of years ago.

*********************************************************************************

Round 22:  Greg Jacknewitz LHP, College(Xavier).  6'3", 210 lbs.

2017:  4-4, 5.03, 68 IP, 30 BB, 49 K.

*********************************************************************************

Round 23:  Shane Matheny 3B, College(Washington St).  B-R, T-R. 6'1", 205 lbs.

.309/.408/.471, 16 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 5 SB, 28 BB, 36 K, 191 AB.  Not the son of Mike Matheny.

*********************************************************************************

Round 24:  Nico Giarratano SS, College(San Francisco).  B-S, T-R.  6'0", 195 lbs.

2017:  .218/.295/.311, 22 BB, 51 K, 238 AB.  Defensive wizard with no stick.

*********************************************************************************

Round 25:  Franklin Van Gurp RHP.  College(Florida International).  6'1", 210 lbs.

0-1, 2.91, 21.2 IP, 17 BB, 32 K, 2 Saves.  Gotta love the name.

*********************************************************************************

Round 26:  Kyle McPherson SS, College(James Madison).  B-R, T-R.  5'11", 180 lbs.

2017:  330/.404/.520, 12 2B, 8 HR, 22 BB, 28 K, 200 AB.

*********************************************************************************

Round 27:  Matt Brown RHP.  College(San Jose St).  6'6", 220 lbs.

2017:  4-6, 5.95, 72.2 IP, 64 BB, 62 K.  This is where I picture the scouts in the war room starting to look for random pitchers 6'6" or above.

*********************************************************************************

Round 28:  Peter Lannoo RHP, College(Cornell).  6'6", 220 lbs.

0-0, 3.86, 21 IP, 6 BB, 16 K, 8 Saves.  Look!  Here's another one!

*********************************************************************************

Round 29:  Frank Rubio RHP, College(Florida).  5'11", 195 lbs.

1-1, 4.05, 26.2 IP, 5 BB, 19 K, 2 Saves.

*********************************************************************************

Round 30:  Sean Watkins OF, College(Cal St LA).  5'10", 180 lbs.

2017:  .368, 17 2B, 2 3B, 14 HR, 19 BB, 34 K, 124 AB.  Played in Cape Cod League. Not sure what his stats were there.

*********************************************************************************

Round 31:  Keenan Bartlett RHP, College(Richmond).  6'1", 170 lbs.

2017:  0-2, 8.90, 31.1 IP, 26 BB, 21 K.  Small pitcher with bad numbers.  What the……?

*********************************************************************************

Round 32:  Blake Rivera RHP, JC(Wallace St(AL)).  6'4", 220 lbs.

2017:  7-1, 1.94, 55.2 IP, 20 BB, 77 K.  Big pitcher with good numbers taken a round after a small pitcher with bad numbers.  As Vin Scully would say, "go figure!".  Hmm…Wallace St is in Alabama?  Wonder who THAT was named after?  They have a Senator named Luther Strange.  Maybe someday there will be a Strange St?

*********************************************************************************

Round 33:  Peyton Maddox C, College(VMI).  B-R, T-R.  6'3", 185 lbs.

2017:  .291/.368/.459, 16 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 21 BB, 69 K, 223 AB.  Not sure if there is a military commitment attached to VMI.  Current administration is going back to strict enforcement of commitments by Military Academy athletes.

*********************************************************************************

Round 34:  Conner Nurse RHP, HS.  6'6", 210 lbs.

No stats.  FB has been clocked at 92.  College commitment is to JC so should be signable.  Another name for the denizens of AT&T Park to have fun with.

*********************************************************************************

Round 35:  Dalton Combs OF, College(Huntington(Sr).  B-L, T-L.  6'3", 200 lbs.

2017:  .386/.448/.545, 7 2B, 3 HR, 7 BB, 20 K, 101 AB.

*********************************************************************************

*********************************************************************************

Round 37:  Andy Rohloff RHP, College(Central Florida).  6'3", 195 lbs.

0-0, 3.86, 9.1 IP, 3 BB, 10 K.  Hey!  The K/9!

*********************************************************************************

Round 38:  Antonio Saldana LHP, HS.  6'7", 230 lbs.

Big kid!  FB listed at 87 MPH.  Commitment is to JC and on Twitter it sounds like he plans to sign.

*********************************************************************************

Round 39:  Brad Dobzanski RHP, HS.  6'3", 195 lbs.

No stats.  FB listed at 91 MPH. Commitment to Kentucky.  Unlikely to sign.

*********************************************************************************

Round 40:  Liam Jenkins RHP, JC.  6'8", 250 lbs.

5-1, 2.28, 43.1 IP, 27 BB, 44 K.

  1. It's interesting where they come up with these guys, especially the pitchers. After the first few rounds, hardly any of the Giants' picks -- even up to overall #500 -- were from BA's "Top 500" - rather, they were mostly anonymous perhaps except to diligent scouts. The Tidrow crew scouting pitchers seems to have specific things they look for, something they feel they can mold, and must spend a ton of time on the road, trying to get to out-of-the-way places just in time to see specific pitchers throw. Now that would be a tough job ...

In any event, we'll certainly all root for Tostado.

  2. Agree pretty much with your take on the draft. Ramos and Gonzalez have high ceilings as high school hitters and it's wait and see how the drafted pitching do. The Giants have done a good job developing hitters under John Barr. The interesting thing to me is that the Giants seemed to have shifted to being better at developing hitters then pitchers which is fine with me. Maybe Tyler Beede and TY Blach will change that perception.

  3. The Giants did a good job drafting and developing Posey, Bumgarner, Panik, Belt, Crawford, and and and who? Tomlinson? Duffy if he were still a Giant. Obviously Sandoval and others who left SF for "greener" pastures.
Jury is out on Slater, Arroyo, Blach, Beede, Mac, Crick, Parker and everyone else who hasn't proved they can get ML batters out or hit ML pitching.
Lack of depth came home to roost this year when Bumgarner and Smith went down early, and Melancon was up-and-down.
Contrary to our expectations this is not a good team and doesn't have the core to get better unless everything that has been bad gets better while the "core" stays intact.
Cueto's bad year and Núñez's good year may work to the Giants advantage, but a whole bunch of guys have to come through in 2018 to be a contender. Pence and Span may be contributors but they are not going to be better. Arroyo, Slater, and another rook need to be ML ready. Beede/Blach/someBody need to be beneficial, the bullpen needs to plug the leaks.
This is akin to filling an inside royal flush. Sure,it can happen, but don't bet your house!
