Game Wrap 6/21/2017: Braves 5 Giants 3 in 11 Innings

Hunter Pence's laser shot HR in the top of the 9'th inning tied the game and rescued a QS by Jeff Samardzija, only to have Matt Kemp hit a walk-off opposite field HR in the 11'th inning to give the Braves the win.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF-- 3 for 5, 3B.  BA= .274.  Span continues his hot June hitting .342.  His triple in the 8'th set up a run and got the Giants close enough for Pence to tie it in the 9'th.  Did you know that by Fangraphs metrics, Denard Span is the 11'th best defensive CF in MLB this season?

Hunter Pence RF- 2 for 4, HR(5), BB.  BA= .251.  Pence his hitting .351 over his last 10 games.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 8 K, GO/AO= 9/1.  ERA= 4.74.  Shark continues to put up ace level peripherals and continues to get hurt by the longball.  He got a QS out of this one though.

Sam Dyson RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.43.  Since an unlucky first appearance with the Giants, Dyson has pitched 4.1 innings with 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  Giants may have found their setup man who also has closing experience.

Matt Cain tries for a series tie tonight facing lefty Jaime Garcia who always seems to give the Giants fits.  Hmm….I guess all pitchers give the Giants fits these days?

  1. I'm glad to read that Span has put his defensive troubles behind him. Because earlier in the season 11th was a long way away...

Pence also seems to be clawing his way back into defensive respectability as well getting his 'hit' on...

  2. Good to see Span and Pence playing a bit better. I realize Nunez is hurt, but can we all agree that Hill is not a major league quality player anymore. I wanted him to do well, but he is 1 for his last 26. He's an automatic out. Might as well see what Ryder Jones or JGH can do.

    1. Definitely in favor of DFA Hill for Hwang.

    2. I didn't want Hill on the roster when we signed him. I didn't need three months of mediocrity to verify that he was, in fact, all washed up.

  3. With the short pen, maybe they should have left in Shark and let him hit. Then maybe they don't have to get two from Gearrin.

  4. I was wondering why they went long with Dyson and Gearrin as well. They had Melancon, Crick, Osich, Kontos and Morris in the pen. No need to push Sammy that hard.

  5. Hard to believe that the Giants pitching is 2nd in MLB in quality starts with 40 and they are 20 games below 500. They are in most of these games and the offense hasn't come thru. Don't see how BamBam survives this.
