Game Wrap 6/18/2017: Rockies 7 Giants 5

The Giants got a QS from Ty Blach and a go-ahead PH 2-run HR from Hunter Pence in the top of the 9'th.  Brandon Crawford doubled in an insurance run.  Then Mark Melancon not only allowed his 4'th Blown Save of the season, he gave up 4 runs, the last 3 on Nolan Arenado's 3-run walk-off blast, a crushing loss that put an exclamation point on a season already lost.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 1 for 2, 3 BB, 2 SB(3).  BA= .266.  Span continues to set the table at the top of the order.  His teammates at the top of order have not always taken advantage.

Brandon Crawford- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(6).  BA= .258.  Nice game for Crawford out of the 3-hole.

Hunter Pence PH- 1 for 1, HR(4).  BA= .251.  When you go to analyze what went wrong this season, Hunter Pence's injuries and ineffectiveness would be a good place to start.  He came through big time here, though.

Ty Blach LHP- 6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.23.  Must have been a thrill for Blach to start a game in his hometown.  He delivered too.  If you can pitch in Coors Field, you can pitch anywhere.

Mark Melancon RHP- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.09.  4'th Blown Save of the season with 2 weeks before the half-way mark.  That would be approximately the pace set by Santiago Casilla last year.  Are Blown Saves contagious?  Is Closing such a mental task that expecting to blow the save is transferrable from one closer in one season to a new closer in a new season?  Is Melancon healthy?  Is it ever a good idea to sign any closer to a big long term contract?

The Giants move on to Atlanta where they try to shake off the 4-game sweep and the crushing loss today with Johnny Cueto facing RA Dickey.

  1. Giants prn is a mess amd my guess is Melancon is hurt. Not that it would have made any difference but they need to stop sending Hill and Hernandez out there. Waste of sots and at bats

    1. Hernandez has actually been playing well lately. 4th OF isn't the problem.

    2. Gorkys is 8 for 17 in June so far.

  2. Good question about Melancon's health. He's been used only 3 times this month. He said he doesn't even know if he can pitch on consecutive days! Hard to believe he's 100 percent.

Well it must excite you that the Giants could have a top 5 pick in 2018 draft. Just looking at the bright side!

    1. Is the 2018 draft rumored to be a good one, by chance? Do we have a sense of things like that yet??

It feels like a bunch of years since the last "loaded draft" where there's a Price/Harper/Beckham/Posey at the top and good talent through the top 10.

    2. I've read that the 2018 draft is really deep in HS pitching. It's looking pretty good overall at the top although I don't know how good it is if a college 1B(Seth Beer) is being ranked in the top 5. I think he's a good hitter, but not THAT good!

    3. Yeah it's tough when Seth Beer and Luken Baker who are 1B are getting major top 5 top 10 buzz. Could this just force the Giants to continue what they started this year and draft for a post-posey era?

  3. As with so many things, 5 runs used to be enough to win.
Even the 1-run scored Game 3, the Giants were in it -- 10 hits! -- until Brian Morris "threw" it away, 3 more runs put it out of reach. (In fairness, after his first 2 "bad" appearances Morris had been nearly perfect in his previous 15 games -- 1 bad one in 15 appearances.)
Belt has disappeared for the last week plus, slashing .091/.211/.182 in the current 8/9 losses. He's been a non-factor since May 3rd, yet he's the Giants #2 WAR for the season (batters).
Buster's hitting .400 in the last 8 games but has but 2 RBIs.
    Dysfunctional?
If the Giants manage to split the next 10 games (Braves, Mets, Rox), they will have 50 losses @ 81 games played, 19 games under .500
What if, with Bumgarner back, SF has a second half like last year's 1st half? They were 50-31 in the first 81 (2016) -- that would get them exactly to .500!
Out of the playoffs with 5 teams currently above .500 and the Cubs @ .500 exactly.
    GO GIANTS!
