Game Wrap 6/25/2017: Mets 8 Giants 2

The Giants did not put up much of a fight to try to stave off a sweep at home against a team that is not very good.  Key Lines:

Ryder Jones 3B- 0 for 2.  BA= .000.  Opposing pitchers already seem to have a book on Jones.  He's looking for fastballs early in the count and he's not seeing the back-foot slider well.

Austin Slater LF- 0 for 2.  BA= .324.  Slater made a couple of nice running catches in the OF.  He also had a pretty nice oppo-field line drive carry into Jay Bruce's glove.

Matt Moore LHP- 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.04.  I don't know if Moore was tipping his pitches or if Rene Rivera is very good at remembering opposing pitch sequences, but he appeared to know both the pitch and location ahead of time on his 2 dingers.  I mean, he swung from the heels like there was no doubt in his mind both times.  And he's a weak hitting backup catcher and if he's that good at reading pitch sequences, how come he doesn't do that against other pitchers?

*********************************************************************************

The Giants try to regroup agains the visiting Rockies who are coming off a losing streak of their own(remember the Mets were coming off a 4-game sweep in LA).  Jeff Samardzija faces German Marquez tomorrow night.

  1. From csnbayarea.com - "Austin Slater, a rare bright spot in this five-win month, was pulled with a tight hip flexor. He was headed for an MRI."

    And the hits keep comin'!

  2. I've been disappointed that the Giants younger relievers such as Law,Osich, Okert have not stepped up to pitch better. They seem to be regressing instead. Does, the org have issues with the way they draft and develop pitchers? Strickland is pitching better but hoping they trade him, not a fan after his selfish move against Harper.
That move hurt the team more then help..

    1. Bullpen arms are generally drafted in later rounds so are by definition not likely to make it.

Remember that of the "Big 4" Romo was the only one drafted and developed by the Giants. Casilla, Affeldt and Lopez were all acquired by trade.

  3. Checking the Arizona league box score and Bumgarner threw 3 shutout innings. Good to see him feeling better. No need to rush, just get better

    1. Agree the 3 inning stint was very encouraging.

  4. Where do you start? att not a hitters park yet opponents BOMB homers doubles and triples like batt. practice/ G's pitchers allow hits about every other pitch, yet G's hitters cannot line drive anything out of infield. Former RBI guys hit weak tappers or KO. Vs. Rock's like a AA team against the Big Leaguers! What happened?

    1. The HR/FB of Giants opponents is the lowest in baseball.

Again, don't underestimate the power of BABIP luck.

  5. So what happens when the pitching ERA is triple [think already beyond double] the team batt. average, or even sextuplet the
    run production percentage?

    1. I have no idea what you are referring to here.

  6. As the Giants degraded, flipped over to see how the Rockies were fairing against the Dodgers. Of course, the Dodger vibe is the exact opposite of what we have going here. Dodgers got into the Rockies pen in the 3rd, and basically Black burned his entire bullpen.

Things are bad here, but Rockie reliever Adam Ottavino, who worked a total of 1 IP, threw 4 WPs, scoring 5 (FIVE!) Dodger runs. Every time a Dodger advanced to 3rd, he threw a wild pitch. Crazy.

Rockies are on a skid as well, so I guess we'll find out if they want to stay in the conversation for division winner. About the only thing the Giants have left is to help decide playoff positions.

    1. It's pretty easy to have a good vibe when you are going good and the opposing pitchers makes 4 WP's.
