Down on the Farm: 07-17-2010

AAA Las Vegas 51's downed the Fresno Grizzlies 7-4:

Emmanuel Burriss- 3 for 5. BA= .286.
Jesus Guzman- 2 for 3, 2 HR(12), BB. BA= .302.
Daryl Maday- 6 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 10.06.
Tony Pena- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 13.50.
Jeremy Accardo- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(16). ERA= 2.83.

Is Burriss the Giants starting SS in 2011? Maday and Pena are finding life much rougher in the PCL than the EL. Our old friend Jeremy Accardo is doing well in a very tough place to pitch. I wonder when/if he'll get another shot at the show?

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Bowie Baysox 5-2:

Brandon Belt- 2 for 4. BA= .417.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .272.
Clay Timpner- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .290.
Clayton Tanner- 7.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.30.

The Brandon Belt watch continues with him raising his BA a tick in this game. Tanner pitched shutout ball for the first 6 innings. I just noticed that Roger Kieschnick's name has been missing from the Squirrels lineups for awhile. He has not appeared since July 3. This is turning into a completely lost season for Roger, probably form nagging injuries. I think I read somewhere that his back is bothering him.

High A San Jose Giants defeated the Lancaster Jethawks 7-5:

Juan Perez- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .296.
Francisco Peguero- 3 for 4, BB, SB(33). BA= .304.
Charlie Culberson- 3 for 4, HR(14), BB, SB(17). BA= .325.
James Simmons- 1 for 4, HR(6). BA= .223.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.61.

Peguero has really turned his season around. He's drawn 5 BB's in his last 10 games out of 12 for the entire season. Interestingly, the Giants have Juan Perez playing CF every day while Peguero plays RF or DH's most of the time, even though Peguero seems to have the superior speed. Culberson had another busy line. I like busy lines!

Low A Charleston River Dogs edged out the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2:

Dan Cook- 2 for 3. BA= .288.
Hector Sanchez- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .283.
Brian Irving- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.18.
Kyle Vazquez- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.68.
Zack Wheeler- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.85.

I agree, it's strange the Wheeler is still showing up for 1 inning stints about every other game. Is he going to be pitching out of the bullpen the rest of the way? I can't be that he's thrown too many innings! I wonder if there's more to the story of his injury than a torn fingernail? At least it was a dominant 1 inning!

Short Season Boise Hawks tore up the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 10-3:

Chris Lofton- 2 for 3, SB(7). BA= .271.
Carlos Quintana- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .293.
Dan Brock- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .306.

Izturis ran for Lofton. Gotta think Chris must have been hurting to come out for a pinch runner.

Rookie AZL Reds beat the Giants 7-5:

Jose De La Cruz- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(1), SB(1). BA= .386.
Rafael Rodriguez- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .143.
Chris Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Reiner Roibal- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

I am really digging what this kid De La Cruz is doing. Great size at 6'3", 190 lbs. This is his 19 yo season. As a 17 yo in 2008, he went .266/.314/.369. Last year, he stayed in the DSL at age 18 and improved his line to .301/.353/.404. Coming to the States this season he's gone .386/.426/.568 in a small 12 game sample size. I liked what I saw following his box scores in the DSL last year and he's definitely on my radar screen now. This was RafRod's 2'nd game back from a stint on the DL. I hadn't noticed that he went 0 for 3 on 7/15. Since Chris Wilson hadn't appeared before 7/14, I assume he's rehabbing an injury. Reiner Roibal makes his pro debut in the USA!

DSL The entire DSL was idle for their All-Star game which will be played today.

  1. I feel encouraged by Gillaspie hitting at .272. Its such a tough hitters league. But then, looking at Belts line so far. WOW!

  2. I'm not as discouraged by Noonan's or Gillaspie's numbers in Richmond as some. Richmond park is statistically playing as a pretty extreme pitcher's park. The Giants may have improved the weather factor by moving from Norwich, CT to Richmond, VA, but the park factors may be just as negative. As I mentioned, Kieschnick's season seems to be pretty much lost due to back problems, and of course Darren Ford's regression and legal problems would seem to be a bad sign for his career.
