Down on the Farm: 07-15-2010

AAA Las Vegas 51's blanked the Fresno Grizzlies 3-0:

Kevin Pucetas- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.54.

Nothing to see on offense.

AA Bowie Baysox topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-6:

Nick Noonan- 3 for 5. BA= .258.
Thomas Neal- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .285.
Brandon Belt- 3 for 4, 3B, HR(5), BB. BA= .410.

What a line for Belt! He missed a cycle by a double. I would think Belt has to be starting to draw some national attention with the way he has just destroyed two levels, including AA, in his first professional season.

High A San Jose Giants downed the High Desert Mavericks 7-5:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 5, 3B(11), BB, 2 SB(32). BA= .297.
Charlie Culberson- 4 for 5, SB(16). BA= .321.
Drew Biery- 3 for 5. BA= .279.
Ehire Adrianza- 1 for 4, 2 BB, SB(21). BA= .261.
David Quinowski- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.39.
Jason Stoffel- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.79.

Great looking line for Peguero who is hitting .375 in his last 10 games with 5 SB's. Culberson seems to have become a complete hitter for both average and power.

Low A Charleston River Dogs slipped by the Augusta Greenjackets 6-5:

Nick Liles- 2 for 5, SB(18). BA= .324.
Tommy Joseph- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .228.

Not too much to comment on here.

Short Season Boise Hawks soared over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 10-7:

Adam Duvall- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .283.
Jose Medina- 2 for 4, HR(3), HBP. BA= .295.
Julio Izturis- 2 for 4, SB(4). BA= .303.
Edward Concepcion- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.06.
Jake Dunning- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.06.

Not too much comment worthy here either.

Rookie AZL Royals defeated the Giants 7-3:

Wes Hobson- 2 for 5, SB(3). BA= .338.
Joe Staley- 1 for 3, 2B, SF. BA= .222.
Jose De La Cruz- 2 for 4. BA= .325.
Austin Fleet- 3.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.82.
Gaspar Santiago- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Fleet has his first bad game. Did he get a bit unlucky in this one? The K's and BB's would suggest so. Santiago is a 20 yo from Puerto Rico, a new name to me. Anyone know his story?

DSL Phillies dumped the Giants 6-3:

Alberto Robles- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B. BA= .264.
Marvin Barrios - 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.64.

Barrios was due for an off game.

I'm sure everybody knows the Giants signed Dontrelle Willis to a minor league contract. No harm is seeing if the Giants coaching staff can find an answer. A low risk signing that is unlikely to make an impact, but the reward is great if it pays off.

  1. Drb been a fan for awhile like your insight and medical perspective. One thing...are we going to see another panda like call up to the big for Belt? I would like to see it! Hard to imagine that he wouldn't be a lighting in a bottle (cheaper than a trade!!.....) Keep up the great analysis.

  2. Obviously there will be a drop off in terms of potential, and thus in the Giants ranking among teams by BA for 2011, since Bumgarner and Posey won't be eligible for minors anymore. With only Wheeler and the prior denigration of the Giants farm system, I figured they would just drop us into the 20's again.

But Belt changes that equation, I think. I agree, got to be getting some national attention now that he's conquering AA, it is one thing to be lucky at one level - since he wasn't that highly regarded previously - but to continue in AA like nothing changed!

To a lesser degree, but still good, Culberson and Perez has to be opening some eyes with their nice performances in San Jose as well.

And I'm sure I'm missing someone else, plus Gary Brown should help once he is signed and playing, Parker too, and Charles Jones is one who also should garner praise for the Giants farm system.

  3. I expect the Giants farm system to take a temporary hit in the next round of farm system rankings. Callis said recently that it would likely be in the early 20's as of right now. That's to be expected. Their system would have to be deep beyond belief to maintain ranking after graduating two prospects of the caliber of Posey and Bumgarner. I do think some things could change between now and the end of the season:

    If Belt continues to rake.

If Neal, Culberson and Peguero continue to stay hot.

If Wheeler stays healthy and finishes strong.

    Charlie Jones keeps raking

    Brown and Parker get signed.

Yeah, I think it could move up into the late teens.

A big international signing or two would also help, but that is starting to look quite unlikely.

I don't really see Belt going all the way to the majors this year. I guess it could happen if the Giants don't trade for a bat and Travis stumbles badly at first base. More likely Belt finishes the year out in AA putting himself in line for a long look in spring training and likely another year in the minors with Fresno.
