Down on the Farm: 07-07-2010

AAA Colorado Springs SkySox downed the Fresno Grizzlies 7-1:

Brett Pill- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .302.
Joe Martinez-7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.32.

Pill has a 15 game hitting streak going. Joe Martinez has another solid game. Looks like he'll have to make the majors as a reliever or with another organization.

AA Harrisburg Senators shut out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-0:

Brandon Belt- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .471.
Craig Westcott- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.27.
Andy Sisco- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.86.

Belt had the only hits of the night for the Squirrels. Sisco is unscored upon in his last 5 appearances.

HIgh A San Jose Giants blanked the Stockton Ports 3-0:

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 3, HBP, SB(28). BA= .293.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, SB(13). BA= .323.
Johnny Monell- 1 for 3, HR(7), BB, SB(8). BA= .228.
Eric Surkamp- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 14 K's. ERA= 3.23.

Peguero is hitting .450 over his last 10 games. I believe this is the most dominant start we've seen from Surkamp this year, maybe from any pitcher in the organization this year?

Low A Lexington Legends beat the Augusta Greenjackets 4-1:

Chris Dominguez- 2 for 4, HR(13). BA= .275.

Short Season Northwest League idle.

AZL Rookie Mariners topped the Giants 10-3:

Charles Jones- 1 for 4, HR(1), OF Assist. BA= .240.
Sundrendy Windster- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .310.
Devin Harris- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .267.

Windster played 1B in this game. I don't recall him playing anything but OF in the past.

DSL Phillies edged the Giants 2-1:

Leonardo Fuentes- 2 for 4. BA= .255.
Joan Gregorio- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 10/4. ERA= 1.73.

Remember Darren Ford getting held up at gunpoint and robbed of $300 while making a deposit for the car dealership where he was working? Turns out it may have been a hoax. He has now been arrested and charged with theft plus making a false police report. There has to be a lot more to this story. I wonder what other personal issues Darren has been having? What impact has that had on his performance this year? Seems like there may a story here waiting for our friend Garrett Broshuis to write. Very sad, in any case.

  1. Is this Belt kid for real? He was a good hitter in college, but NOTHING like this.

I have not been able to track down this stat myself, but I have heard that his BABIP is somewhere near .500 this year. Is it possible this whole thing is just luck and he is really just an OK hitting defensive 1B that he appeared to be pre-draft?

Sad about Ford. Assuming he is done with the organization (big assumption, granted) does that mean Pegeuro gets the bump to Richmond or does Timpner just get more time?

  2. I think Surkamp's start is the best so far this season.

I liked Sisco before, hope he can do it.

Martinez can be our long reliever.

  3. It seems like Ford is going to try to play through his legal troubles. If he can perform, I would say he's innnocent until proven guilty and he should play if he wants to. Even if convicted, if the organization still feels he has potential, and he pays whatever debt to society it is determined he owes, he should still be able to play as long as he's a free man.
