I guess it's not too surprising that the Giants might suffer a letdown coming out of their 4 game sweep in Milwaukee. Going against mighty Stephen Strasburg, Matt Cain and the Giants kept it close for awhile, but let it get away in the later innings for a near blow out. On top of that, the Giants may have lost Andres Torres for awhile. A fairly strong case can be made for Torres being the Giants MVP so far. If he is lost for a signicant period, that may hurt the Giants pennant chances a lot more than losing the game. Key lines:
Andres Torres- 1 for 2, HR(7). BA= .281. So does Rowand get most of Torres' AB's while he's gone? I'd like to see Bochy take a chance on Nate in CF.
Matt Cain- 6.2 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.34. Cain was the team ace a few weeks ago. He's definitely struggling now. Vin Scully hinted during Cain's game vs the Dodgers that he might be tipping pitches. The Giants need to look at that, hard. He managed to keep this one close through 5 , but then let it get away from him in the 6'th and 7'th innings.
The Padres lost to the Rockies 10-8 so the Giants remain 5 games out of first place in the NL West. The Dodgers beat the Cubbies 9-7 so they and Colorado move up to just 2 games behind the Pads. Arizona lost to Florida 3-2 so the D'Backs remain 17.5 games behind.
Jonathan Sanchez tries to get the Giants back on the winning track pitching against Craig Stamman. With Stamman's 5.73 ERA it would seem the Giants have a pretty fair chance at winning this game, but you never know.
