Down on the Farm: 07-14-2010

AAA International League All-Stars topped the PCL All-Stars 2-1:

Brock Bond- 0 for 2. Ironically, Brock Bond was the only Fresno Grizzly on the PCL squad.

AA EL West All-Stars defeated the AL East All-Stars 10-3:

Thomas Neal- 1 for 3, BB.
Jake Stevens- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

Richmond is apparently in the EL West, so our guys were on the winning team.

High A San Jose Giants blasted the High Desert Mavericks 10-4:

Juan Perez- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .295.
Charlie Culberson- 1 for 3, HR(13), BB. BA= .313.
Francisco Peguero- 2 for 4, 3B(10). BA= .292.
Michael Sandoval- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1). BA= .276.
Justin Fitzgerald- 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.45.
Brian Anderson- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.67.

Culberson has done a good job of becoming the centerpiece of the lineup after Belt left. Peguero is hitting .350 over his last 10 games. Nice game for Big Brother Panda. Anderson looked terrible in Lake Elsinore a few weeks ago, but seems to be putting up much better looking lines lately allowing just 1 ER over his last 7 appearances.

Low A Charleston River Dogs downed the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Chris Dominguez- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .266.
Tommy Joseph- 2 for 4, HR(12). BA= .228.
Jorge Bucardo- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 13/3. ERA= 2.38.
Zack Wheeler- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 5.02.

Bucardo has been remarkably consistent all season with his stat line for his last 10 games almost identical to his overall stat line. His K's have tailed off a bit from early in the season. The GB ratio is exactly the same. Some may be disheartened over Tommy Joseph's performance this year. I think he's doing just fine considering the strength of the SAL and the fact that this is his first professional experience other than Instructional League. Tommy is hitting .295 with a .732 SLG% over his last 10 games. I like it when I see a walk in Chris Dominguez batting line.

Short Season Salem-Keizer dropped the Boise Hawks 4-2:

Chris Lofton- 2 for 5. BA= .281.
Dan Brock- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(2). BA= .313.
Taylor Rogers- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.91.
Andrew Romo- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Brock's SB must have been a fluke. It was a steal of home. Andrew Romo makes his 3'rd appearance for S-K after getting knocked around a bit in AAA.

Rookie AZL Giants edged the Royals 9-8 in 10 innings:

Devin Harris- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(2). BA= .283.
Joe Staley- 3 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .216.
Sundrendy Windster- 3 for 5, 2 HR(3). BA= .341.
Charlie Jones- 1 for 4, BB, SB(3). BA= .320.
Todd Wellemeyer- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 6.75.

Windster seems to have moved to 1B. That's not a good sign long term. I've been thinking that with so few breaks through the dog days, the Giants should think about going to a 6 man rotation when Wellemeyer gets back. After seeing this line, maybe that's not such a good idea?

DSL Giants crushed the Mets 12-1:

Alberto Robles- 3 for 4, 2 BB, SB(13). BA= .255.
Juan Nova- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. BA= 3.08.

  1. Where do you think Culberson will start next year? Will he stay on track on go to Richmond, or will he join his '07 brethren in Fresno (BTW, who would have thought that Williams would be the 2nd most advanced of that class at this point?)?

I am not concerned with Joseph at all. Yes, he has had some consistency issues, but he is carrying a pretty massive power stick, and as you said, this is his first taste of post-HS ball. I am really liking the '09 class (Wheeler, Domingez, Tommy, Belt, Liles, Cavan, etc, etc, etc)

  2. Say, is Andrew Romo Sergio's brother? If so, I wonder why one so regular and the other unique?

Do you think anything will come of the older Sandoval, DrB?

Culberson's 2011 home will be interesting. Part of the equation is what position he'll be playing, another is where Noonan and Crawford ends up. Neither of them look like they will get promoted to AAA, which would jump Culberson to AAA theoretically. If either is promoted, that opens a starting spot in AA for him.

I think Joseph is doing OK. His overall OPS looks low, but the average for SAL is only slightly above where he is now. If he can continue his hot streak, he'll be above the average as a 19 YO against mostly 21 and 22 YO's. More impressive is that power, he's tied for 8th in the league, and 2nd among players 20 YO and younger (Kyle Skipworth, another C, is first).

Sure, strikes out a lot, don't walk much, but when he connects, it flies far. And as he gains pro experience and catches up in age, he shouldn't strike out as much and his power should lead to more walks to avoid him. I wonder how his defense is holding up?

Why did Zack only pitch one inning?

Ooo, Brian Anderson had a nice outing in San Jose. Any hope he can regain past success?

  3. Andrew Romo is indeed Sergio's bro, older, I think. I'm guessing that the Giants signed both him and Michael Sandoval as favors. I don't see anything wrong with that. Who knows, maybe they'll be inspired to greater things playing in the same organization as their siblings?

I think Zack is still ramping up from being on the DL so long. That must have been a heckuva torn fingernail!

I've never considered Anderson to be more than a fringe prospect due to lack of big league velocity. Maybe he brings enough other things to the table to make it, but the odds are long.

  4. Cool, thanks!

I'm definitely on-board with signing brothers, you never know, like signing Bobby Bonds Jr. when we had Barry, maybe lightening strikes twice. Though, then again, there was our Rich Murray (Eddie's brother) experience. :^)

That makes sense about Zach. Yeah, must be!

I see your point about Anderson, I forgot about that, but he was so dominating that I thought maybe he could be useful in set-up. Oh well, memory going...
