The Giants offense broke out against Ubaldo Jimenez and the Colorado Rockies. Barry Zito, unused to that kind of run support, almost let it all slip away in a classic Coors Field slugfest that the Giants eventually won to break their 7 game losing streak. Key lines:
Andres Torres- 2 for 4, BB, SB(15). BA= .275. Torres was on base 3 times filling the leadoff role perfectly.
Freddy Sanchez- 3 for 5. BA= .293. Freddy's BA had been in free-fall before this game.
Aubrey Huff- 1 for 5, HR(15). BA= .290. The Huff Man has 3 HR's in his last 2 games. He had been 0 for the 7 games prior.
Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 4, SF. BA= .271. Sandoval is having a sort of a Sophomore Jinx year, but he hasn't completely cratered.
Buster Posey- 0 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .302. Posey will likely walk a lot more than Molina.
Travis Ishikawa- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .293. Travis gets a start and hits a two out Grand Salami that was the difference in the game.
Nate Schierholtz- 1 for 3, 3B. BA= .269. Nate comes off the bench and contributes.
Barry Zito- 5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.75. I'll give Zito a pass on this one, especially since the Giants won. Coors field is historically a graveyard for curveball pitchers.
Brian Wilson- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(22). ERA= 2.10. Wilson, once again, goes more than 1 IP to save the game. There haven't been too many save chances, even from the 8'th inning, recently.
With the win, the Giants remain 6.5 games behind the NL West leading Padres who scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 8'th to back the pitching of Kevin Correia and their bullpen to defeat the 'Stros 1-0. Man, if Correia gets his season back on track, the Pads just about have this wrapped up! The Dodgers crushed the D'Backs 14-1 to remain 3.5 games off the pace while Colorado's loss puts them 5 games behind, 1.5 games ahead of the Giants. Arizona's loss drops them to 13 games behind.
Matt Cain tries to get his game back on track and keep the Giants' nascent win streak going as he faces Jason Hammel in Coors Field today.
Happy Independence Day everybody!!

doc,
ReplyDeletenow would be a good time for you to write that post on bochy that you have been promising....
would love to hear your take on bochy's moves starting in the 8th inning
I don't have a big problem with Bochy's moves. I've always said he's not the greatest in-game manager, but game management is way overrated, particularly by the Bochy-hating wing of the Giants blogosphere. It's always easy to Monday Morning QB managerial decisions. Players have to execute. Bochy is not the Giants biggest problem, by far.
