For those of you who might have been disappointed that last night's game was not a crackling pitcher's duel, you might have liked tonight's game a bit better. Barry Zito and Chad Billingsley hooked up in an old fashioned one with Billz coming out on top. It was hard to tell if Billz actually outpitched Zito or if the Giants hitters were just worse than the Dodgers. Key lines:
Barry Zito- 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.45. Zeets gave up a dinger to the hated Casey Blake, but nothing more until clearly tiring in the 8'th inning. I know he's been doing it awhile, but I'll give a shout out to the way Zito talks to himself out on the mound after doing something he doesn't like. I think it gives him a sense of intensity and determination that maybe hasn't always been there in his Giants career.
Chad Billingsley- 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 16/6. Billz might not have been dominating tonight. It almost seemed like the Giants hitters could have made him work a bit harder, but he certainly was good enough to keep the Giants from getting on the scoreboard. As is common with opposing pitchers, the Giants didn't force Billz to throw enough pitches to get to a very shaky bullpen.
That's it. No hitting lines worth mentioning for the Giants although Huff and Nate had a double each. The Giants couldn't sustain a rally long enough to get any of their baserunners home.
The Padres beat the Braves in extra innings 6-4 to drop the Giants 4 games off the pace. Colorado lost to Florida 5-2 to drop 4.5 gmaes behind while the winning Dodgers remained 6 games behind. The last place D'Backs are tied with the Mets and going to extra innings.
The Giants continue their road trip with a 4 game series in Arizona. Matt Cain gets things started with a matchup vs Rodrigo Lopez in a game the Giants should be expected to win.
