Down on the Farm: 06-30-2010

AAA The PCL was idle.

AA Akron Aeros defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-6:

Thomas Neal- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .288.

Neal is exploding! Down day for the rest of the lads though.

HIgh A Visalia Rawhide topped the San Jose Giants 11-9:

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 4, HBP. BA= .278.
Ehire Adrianza- 3 for 5, 3B. BA= .264.
Brandon Belt- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, SB(16). BA= .380.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .326.
Joel Weeks- 2 for 3, 2B, SB(3). BA= .221.

The top 4 hitters in the lineup all had multihit games.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets rained out.

Short Season Tri-City Dust Devils smothered the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-2:

Ryan Scoma- 3 for 4. BA= .450.
Alex Burg- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .240.
Edwin Escobar- 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.60.
Seth Rosin- 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.57.

Rookie AZL Giants shut out the AZL A's 7-0:

Carlos Willoughby- 2 for 5. BA= .300.
Wes Hobson- 1 for 4, BB, SB(1). BA= .414.
Sundrendy Windster- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .318.
Jose Cuevas- 1 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .263.
Charles Jones- 1 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .273.
Austin Fleet- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 2.35.
Jake Dunnington- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Lots of good stuff here. Windster isn't young for the level, but has a high ceiling. Good to see him hitting. Jones is straight outa high school. If he shows anything here at all it's a major plus for the farm system. So far, he's doing more than that. Fleet was a college closer who is starting for now. He should be moving to a higher level soon. Dunnington was signed as an undrafted FA out of high school last year. He's looking like a real find!

DSL Giants edged the Orioles 2-1:

Leonardo Fuentes- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .274.

11 of Leonardo's 23 hits have been for extra bases.

  1. If, and a big if, Charlie Jones continues to do well into early August, would you consider not signing Gary Brown and/or Jarrett Parker, and get a compensation pick next year?

  2. The Giants should try to sign their first two picks. If you don't sign the compensation pick, you lose it, making it mandatory to take a easily signable player with that pick. It's an OK compensation, but unless the original pick is completely unreasonable, you have to try to get them signed.

  3. Besides, Jones will probably take 4-6 years to develop as he's a H.S. while Brown and Parker are only going to take 2-4 years.

Plus, unless Brown's bonus demands is totally unrealistic, the Giants should be able to sign him, as they haven't been afraid to go overslot before. He is slotted for $1.25M, so he'll probably get somewhere in the $1.5-1.9M range, I don't see him getting over that, though I was surprised by Wheeler's $3M+ bonus, so I could be wrong again.

I hope they sign Brown, I've been studying him and he looks like he would be perfect for us at leadoff and CF, and with any luck (and if he would sign soon), he could maybe make the 2012 or 2013 team (Rowand's last season is 2012).
