Down on the Farm: 07-05-2010

Before I get started with the farm report: Not sure when this happened, but I'd just like to give a shout out thank you to Grant at mccoveychronicles.com for linking this site. That's an honor!

AAA Fresno Grizzlies downed the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 8-6:

Emmanuel Burriss- 4 for 5, SB(3). BA= .302.
John Bowker- 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .321.

Right now, Burriss is probably the #3 SS on the SF Giants depth chart behind Rent and Uribe. Might we see him in SF before the season is over?

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-1:

Brandon Belt- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB. BA= .455.
Conor Gillaspie- 3 for 3, S. BA= .264.
David Mixon- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 0 K's, GO/AO=14/6. ERA= 3.25.

Belt hits his second HR in two days. Gillaspie is swinging a hot bat, but still showing no power to speak of. Don't like to see 0 K's in pitching line, even from a GB pitcher.

High A Bakersfield Blaze scored a run in the bottom of the 9'th to edge the San Jose Giants 4-3:

Juan Perez- 1 for 4, 3B, BB. BA= .301.
Wendell Fairley- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .290.

Fairley is hitting .405 over his last 10 games and has 4 doubles in his last 2 as well as 4 multihit games in a row. Good to see him with a hot bat. He looked a bit overmatched against Lake Elsinore when I saw him a couple of weeks ago. Juan Perez is back in the highlights.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets trounced the Lexington Legends 10-2:

Nick Liles- 3 for 5. BA= .322.
Ryan Cavan- 3 for 5, HR(9). BA= .283.
Luke Anders- 2 for 5, HR(10). BA= .294.
Tommy Joseph- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(9). BA= .229.
Ydwin Villegas- 2 for 5, HR(1).
Chris Heston- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 11/2. ERA= 5.00.

Wow! Ryan Cavan is hitting .442/.510/.930 with 6 HR's in his last 10 games. Talk about red hot!! Tommy Joseph is swinging a hot bat: .325/.372/.600 in his last 10 games with 3 HR's. I always wonder when a guy like Villegas hits a HR if it's an inside-the-park job. It wasn't! Now that's a good pitching line from Heston who has run hot and cold this season.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes downed the Vancouver Canadians 7-4:

Julio Izturis- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .340.
Kyle Mach- 3 for 4, 3B. BA= .254.
Edwin Escobar- 4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.79.
Andrew Romo- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Not too much to comment on here.

AZL Rookie Giants blanked the Brewers 7-0:

Carlos Willoughby- 2 for 4, 2 2B, S. BA= .298.
Jose De La Cruz- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, OF Assist. BA= .333.
Charles Jones- 0 for 3, SF, SB(1). BA= .238.
Josh Lopez- 2 for 4. BA= .296.
Austin Fleet- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 1.42.

I'm starting to get a bit excited about De La Cruz. Love what they are doing with Fleet using a college closer as a starter, but he might be in too low a level having pitched for a top college program, Coastal Carolina.

DSL Yankees beat the Giants 8-4:

Luis Vazquez- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .310. Lefthanded 19 yo listed as a catcher. He DH'd today.

  1. Lots of good news from yesterday. It's good to see Belt getting acclimated quickly to AA pitching. Juan Perez continues to be an intriguing prospect - I look forward to following him in AA next year. I'm still doubtful about Wendell Fairley, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. And you cannot stop Carlos Willoughby, you can only hope to contain him!

Good news down on the farm. Thanks for doing these recaps, Doc. Keep up the good work.

  2. FYI, Hank Schulman tweeted earlier today that Henry Sosa was suspended in AAA for throwing at a hitter.

Looks like the scouts were right about Gillaspie, at least so far, he can hit but not with any power. I was hopeful when he hit a couple of homers in a couple of games, that maybe he figured something out, but looks like that was a fluke.

Wow, Belt just about hit the ground running. He could soon start pushing Ishikawa on the depth chart, at this rate, and battle him for the position next spring training, assuming the Giants aren't able to re-sign Huff and he is playing 1B.

Despite his renewal this season (and that he's been playing LF), what are your thoughts of Fairley vs. Brown (assuming he signs)? I think once he signs, Brown would be our top CF prospect, do you agree?

  3. Thanks for the comments, guys.

Unfortunately, I think Fairley is a LF now. While he may put up a decent BA /OBP, I don't see him having either enough power or enough speed to be a MLB LF.

Brown and Peguero would be the top 2 CF prospects. You have to think that Brown has the inside track by virtue of his draft position and likely signing bonus. Sorry, Francisco, but first round draft picks area always going to get the benefit of the doubt.
