AAA Tacoma Rainiers outlasted the Fresno Grizzlies 6-4 in 11 innings:
Eugenio Velez- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .314.
Steve Holm- 2 for 3, 2B, S. BA= .259.
Matt Yourkin- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.69.
Tony Pena- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 16.88.
Yourkin may be the best Giants best pitcher in the upper minors right now. Pena has had a rough transition to AAA after being so steady in AA.
AA Altoona Curve defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3:
Brandon Belt- 1 for 4, HR(4). BA= .371.
Conor Gillaspie- 3 for 4. BA= .270.
Belt has been amazing. He may be strictly a singles hitter, but at least Gillaspie is getting his BA up into respectable range. He's hitting .406 over his last 10 games. Ted Williams once hit .406 over an entire MLB season. Amazing!
High A Lake Elsinore trounced the San Jose Giants 9-3:
Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 4, BB, SB(20). BA= .264.
Charlie Culberson- 1 for 4, HR(11). BA= .314.
Low A Kannapolis Intimidators blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 4-0:
Luke Anders- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .296.
Chris Heston- 8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.66.
Heston's ERA is 2.51 over his last 8 starts since May 25.
Short Season Tri-City Dust Devils pounded the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 10-0:
Edwin Escobar- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 4.94.
Escobar sailed through the first 4 innings but couldn't get out of the 5'th. As you can see from the K's, he was actually dominant early in the game.
Rookie AZL Giants were idle.
DSL Giants were idle.

You think there's any chance Belt makes it to the majors in September?
ReplyDeleteSince he hasn't missed a step in jumping from advanced A to AA, much like Pablo did in 2008, I wonder if the Giants might bring him up at some point in the season.
Given all the players we already have who can play 1B at least decently, I don't think he'll come up in August, but with call-ups in September, he won't be pushing anyone out (except on the 40 man roster...).
I have been struggling with this question the last few weeks...
ReplyDeleteHe has been raking, but his history before this season (statistically speaking) does not speak to this kind of production. Did the organizational coaches tweek his approach? I dont know. Did he change his workout routine? Dunno either.
I will have to bow to the org's judgment on this, and I will hope for the best, but if he continues to rake I am not sure they CAN keep him down...
The Giants coaching staff reworked Belt's batting stance and swing after he was drafted in Instructional League. He has credited that with helping him accomplish what he has this year. There is no pressure to put him on the 40 man roster, so I think it's unlikely that we will see him in September.
ReplyDeleteThat's important, Doc.
ReplyDeleteIf he made a substantial change to his approach, than I will tend to believe his new numbers over his historical numbers.
Every time I hear something new about this kid, his stock gets better and better.
Good point about the 40 man, forgot about the logjam there.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to hear about his adjustments. That would explain a lot, though to see him blossom like this is still astonishing.
