Game Wrap 7/7/2022: Padres 2 Giants 1(10 Innings)

The Giants pushed across the tying run in the 9'th inning only to lose it in extra innings.

Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 10/5.  ERA= 2.98.  Statistically not Webb's best start but he went 8 innings for the third time this season.  The only other starter to go that deep is Carlos Rodon LHP and he did it just once.  The only run he gave up was a HR off a hanging changeup by Manny Machado 3B.

The Giants managed just 2 hits in the entire game.

Mauricio Llovera RHP struck out the side in a scoreless 9'th inning to get the game to extra innings.  Is Llovera a Closer candidate?

After the Giants failed to advance the "ghost runner", Tommy La Stella DH, in the top of the 10'th inning, Kap elected to walk the Padres leadoff batter in the bottom of the inning.  This is the correct move in this situation as only the lead runner matters and it sets up a force play at 3B.  The Padres bunted to advance the runners and the Giants could not convert the force play setting up Jorge Alfaro's game winning hit off the unlucky Jarlin Garcia LHP.

Credit to Joe Musgrove RHP who is one of the better SP's in the league and threw a lot of unhittable curveballs in 7 shutout innings.

It appears Jurickson Profar LF survived a botched medical situation after taking an knee to the side of the head on a collision trying field a Texas Leaguer pop up.  Profar was allowed to get up and try to walk off the field but collapsed on the edge of the OF grass.  Only then was his head immobilized and a stabilizing collar placed.  That's pretty much trauma 101 there.

Two nights after a one-out Save, Sam Long LHP gets the start tonight against Blake Snell LHP.

  1. FWIW, the season is half finished for SF.
Is the glass half full or half empty?

The Giants are 41-40, 3rd in the NL West, 11.5 games behind the Dodgers, and 2 games from the last spot in the playoffs with 2 teams to climb over to get there.

For the record, at 81 games last year, the Giants were 51-30, half game ahead of the Dodgers, with the best record in the NL. They remained in 1st place the remainder of the year except when they lost 4 in a row to fall a half game out for a day September 1.

There are many games left with LA and San Diego (and Milwaukee, a team they may wrestle with for the last playoff spot).

Short of a near total turnaround, the Giants seem to be holding a near empty glass.

    1. The trajectory is not in the right direction. Stranger things happen but there is no turnaround in sight.
