Down on the Farm: 6/29/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats beat the Reno Aces 8-4.

Brett Wisely CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .288.
Isan Diaz 2B- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .333.
Joey Bart C- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .200.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.73.

Joey Bart has a 4 game hit streak with HR's in consecutive games.  I wonder how much the smaller automated strike zone is impacting Kyle Harrison.  I'm thinking he might do better at the MLB level.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels pounded the Reading Fightin' Phils 14-5.

Wade Meckler CF- 4 for 6, 2B.  BA= .394.
Vaun Brown LF- 2 for 6, 2B, HR(5), SB(7).  BA= .250.
Marco Luciano SS- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .220.
Andy Thomas C- 1 for 4, HR(7), 2 BB.  BA= .203.
Logan Wyatt 1B= 2 for 5, 2B, HR(2), BA= .321.
Hayden Cantrelle 2B- 1 for 4, BB, SB(11).  BA= .216.
Carson Seymour RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.43.
Wil Jensen RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.64.

Wade Meckler has 18 multi-hit games including 8 2-hits, 4 4-hits, 5 4-hits and 1 5-hits.  He has 64 hits in 172 PA's which projects to 223 hits in 600 PA's.  Is Logan Wyatt a legit prospect again?

A+:  Everett Aquasox blanked the Eugene Emeralds 1-0.

Hayden Birdsong RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.75.
William Kempner RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.80.
Hunter Dula RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.91.

A:  Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 5-3.

Heliot Ramos DH- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .167.
Patrick Hilson LF- 1 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .234.
Hayden Wynja LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.17.

Complex Performances:

Miguel Blanco RF(DSL, 17 yo)- 1 for 2, HR(1), BB.  BA= .208.

Randry DeLeon RHP(DSL, 17 yo)- 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 10.13.

Rayner Arias CF(DSL, 17 yo)- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(4).  BA= .421.

Moises De La Rosa LF(DSL, 18 yo)- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .397.

Carlos Concepcion RF(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .250.

Ismael Munguia CF(ACL, Rehab)- 1 for 2, HR(1), BB.  BA= .500.

Justin Bench LF(ACL, 23 yo)- 2 for 4.  BA= .364.

Javier Francisco 3B(ACL, 19 yo)- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .150.

Samir Chires RHP(ACL, 19 yo)- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 8.69.

Way too much good stuff!

Game Wrap 6/20/2023: Blue Jays 2 Giants 1

Keaton Winn had a Quality Start but got no run support as the Giants lost the rubber game of the series.  Key Lines:

Patrick Bailey DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .324.  Bailey DH'd because Joc Pederson had to play LF with multiple OF's on the IL.  Bailey responded like a DH should with 2 hits and scored the Giants only run in the 9'th inning.

Keaton Winn RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.50.  Winn hung a splitter to Vlad in the 6'th inning.  Still pitched more than well enough to win with a little run support.  Should be in line to get another start or two.

The D'Backs lost today so the Giants remain 2.5 games behind them in the NL West but fall into a tie with the Dodgers for the #2 and #3 Wild Card playoff spots pending the outcome of the Dodgers/Rockies game tonight.

Alex Cobb RHP comes off the IL to face Carlos Carrasco RHP in the opener of a weekend series against the Mets in New York tomorrow night.

Down on the Farm: 6/28/2023

AAA:  Reno Aces trumped the Sacramento River Cats 7-2.

Dalton Guthrie CF- 2 for 5.  BA= 286.
Joey Bart C- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .180.

I think this was Joey Bart's first HR of the season at any level.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Reading Fightin' Phils 6-0.

Wade Meckler LF- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .369.
Vaun Brown CF- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .245.
Ryan Murphy RHP- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
Parker Dunshee RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.12.
Blake Rivera RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.21.

A+:  Everett Aquasox buried the Eugene Emeralds 9-4.

Grant McCray CF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .233.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 2 for 5, HR(15).  BA= .303.
Brett Auerbach 3B- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .224.
Seth Lonsway LHP- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 6.41.

A:  Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 6-4.

Patrick Hilson LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .231.
Seth Corry LHP- 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 8.10.

Complex Performances:

Lazaro Morales CF(ACL, 19 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .140.
Ryan Reckley SS(ACL, 18 yo)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .218.
Cesar Quintas RF(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 3, HBP.  BA= .450.
Ubert Mejias RHP(ACL, 22 yo)- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.74.

Game Wrap 6/28/2023: Blue Jays 6 Giants 1

Perhaps the Blue Jays hitters were smarting over being shut down last night because they came out and tacked a 5-spot on Logan Webb RHP in the first inning.  They only scored 1 more run the rest of the game but they got all the runs they needed and more in that first inning.

Austin Slater PH/RF batted for Michael Conforto RF who left the game with the dreaded hamstring tightness after bumping into the RF foul wall on a catch.  Slater later hit a HR for the Giants only run of the game.

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B had 3 hits from the leadoff position in the lineup but it went for naught.

Ross Stripling RHP allowed 1 Run in 3 IP in his first appearance since coming of the IL and nope, it wasn't in a starting role.

Dodgers and D'Backs both lost so the NL West standing remain static.  Giants maintain a 0.5 game lead over the Dodgers for the 2'nd of 3 Wild Card playoff spots.  The Marlins won so now lead the Giants by 2 games for the first Wild Card spot.

The Giants try for a series win tomorrow with TBD facing Chris Bassitt RHP.  Speaking of.....what's going on with Sean Manaea LHP?  He's pitched exactly 2 innings in 2 appearances since June16.

Down on the Farm: 6/27/2023

The full season leagues had a second night in a row off to mark the half-way point in their schedule.  At least that was the word on Twitter.

Complex Performances:

Rayner Arias CF(DSL, 17 yo)- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, BB.  BA= .417.  Unlike the Sabe/Evans regime, FZ's farm directors have shown a willingness to promote DSL players midseason.  Time to move Arias up.  He's way too good for the DSL.  I am bursting with excitement over his potential!

Anyelo Gonzalez C(DSL, 18 yo)- 3 for 5, SF.  BA= .444.

Moises De La Rosa LF(DSL, 18 yo)- 2 for 5, HBP.  BA= .341.

Carlos Concepcion RF(DSL, 17 yo)- 3 for 6.  BA= .231.

Soyger Brizuela C(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .179.

Again, great to see so many 17 and 18 yo putting up great numbers in the DSL.  I don't remember when I was this excited for the Dominican Dandies as I am this year.

Justin Bench 3B(ACL, 23 yo)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .345.

Mauricio Estrella RHP(ACL, 19 yo)- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 9/1.  ERA= 6.75.

Alix Hernandez RHP(ACL, 18 yo)- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.28.

Game Wrap 7/27/2023: Giants 3 Blue Jays 0

Gabe Kapler used and Opener with Alex Wood coming in for bulk innings to counter Kevin Gausman RHP and hey!  It worked!  Key Lines:

Thairo Estrada 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(18). BA= .280.  Estrada scored the Giants first run after singling in the 5'th inning and coming home on Patrick Bailey C's double.  He then came up in the 9'th inning, when the Giants needed in insurance run or two, with runners on first and second and hit a double to drive them both in.  That's right, he drove in runners from 1B and 2B with 2-outs!

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.80.  3 K's overcame a couple of first inning baserunners to start the game off with a shutout inning.

Alex Wood LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 4/1.  ERA= 4.57.  The Opener allowed Wood to stay in the game through the 6'th inning on 80 pitches same as Gausman who threw 106.  Wood left with a 1-0 lead and ended up with the W.  Hmmm.....maybe this Opener BS works after all?

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.79.  Daulton Varsho CF led off the 7'th inning with a double off Alex Wood.  Kap went right to the RH Rogers Bro who went GO, K, K, end of threat.  He the struck out the first two batters of the 8'th before Brandon Belt DH doubled.  That brought in Camilo Doval RHP.......

Camilo Doval RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(23).  ERA= 1.95.  Doval ended the threat in the 8'th.  Estrada drove in the two insurance runs in the top of the 9'th. Game over.  No torture tonight!

I read on Twitter that this was the Giants 10'th road win in a row which set some sort of all time franchise record.  The standings remain static as the Dodgers and Marlins both won and the D'Backs are leading their game 8-4 in the 9'th inning.  Giants are hitting on all 8 cylinders right now(knocks furiously on wood).  Credit where due:  FZ built a deep, resilient roster, "Peppermint" Pete Putila appears to have turbocharged minor league development and Kap is pulling all the right strings on the field.

Logan Webb RHP tries to clinch another series win tomorrow evening against TBD.

Churn WatchWilmer Flores IF was activated from the IL and Isan Diaz IF was optioned to AAA Sacramento.

Down on the Farm: 6/26/2023

Complex Performances:

Justin Bench LF(ACL, 23 yo)- 3 for 4.  BA= .333.  2022 17'th round draft pick.

Estanlin Cassiani CF(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .265.

Javier Castillo DH(ACL, 19 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .308.

Samuel Reyes RF(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .378.

Elian Rayo 3B(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(3), BB.  BA= .229.

Anthony Tandron SS(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, BB, SB(2).  BA= .320.

Dario Reynoso 2B(DSL, 18 yo)- 2 for 3, HR(2), 2 BB, 2 SB(7).  BA= .356.

Angel Guzman LF(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 5,  HR(3).  BA= .364.

Frainer Mejias RHP(DSL, 17 yo)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.00.

Great to see how many 17 and 18 year old players are putting up strong numbers in the DSL this season.  There seems to be lot more talent down there than just Rayner Arias.

Scouting the 2023 Draft: Four More Players

Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B HS.  DOB:  10/20/2004.  B-L, T-R.  6' 7", 220 lbs.

Could be the one true 2-way player in the draft, which is why Giants fans should be aware of him going in.  Tremendous size with oodles of room for growth.  Mid-90's FB with 2 good secondary pitches.  Tremendous LH power with a relatively short stroke giving him enough contact to reach his power.  Per MLB capsule scouting report, most scouts lean toward developing him as a hitter but there is serious debate and some team(like the Giants) might seriously try to develop him both ways.  Also has enough speed and athleticism to play RF and obviously has the arm.  BTW, he looks more like a pitcher to my eye.

Nolan Schanuel 1B/OF College.  DOB:  2/14/2002.  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 220 lbs.

2023(Florida Atlantic):  .447/.615/.868, 19 HR, 71 BB, 14 K, 289 PA.
2022(Cape Cod League):  .200/342/.272, HR, 24 BB, 24 K, 155 PA.

Video game numbers for Florida Atlantic, his hometown college.  Reportely slow afoot which will limit him to 1B or DH in the pros.  Struggled in Cape Cod League which raises questions about strength of competition.  Some of walk rate my be due to that and opposing teams pitching around him.  An FZ led scouting staff could be intrigued by the power and insane K/BB.

Chase Davis OF College.  DOB:  12/5/2021.  B-L, T-L.  6' 1", 215 lbs.

2023(Arizona):  .362/.489/.742, 21 HR, 43 BB, 40 K.
2022(Cape Cod League):  .212/.379/.250, 13 BB, 16 K.

Top 100 draft prospect in 2020 who did not get picked due to shortened draft.  Sweet lefthanded swing with power.  Probably more of a corner OF than CF.  Harold Reynolds of MLB is a big fan and comps his swing to Carlos Gonzalez.  Video looks a lot like Lamonte Wade Jr to my eye.  I am always suspicious of numbers out of Arizona or ASU.

Walker Martin SS HS:  DOB:  2/20/2004.  B-L, T-R.  6'2", 188 lbs.

2-sport athlete from Colorado.  Also played QB for his HS.  Great size for a SS with both hit and power tools which would play at 3B if he has to move there.

DrB's 2023 Draft Board:

1.  Dylan Crews OF(College)
2.  Paul Skenes RHP(College)
3.  Wyatt Langford OF(College)
4.  Walker Jenkins OF(HS)
5.  Max Clark OF(HS)
6. Jacob Gonzalez SS(College)
7.  Jacob Wilson SS(College)
8.  Kyle Teel C(College)
9.  Tommy Troy SS(Stanford)
10. Arjun Nimmala SS(HS)
11.  Brayden Taylor 3B(College)
12.  Brock Wilken 3B(College)
13.  Noble Meyer RHP(HS)
14.  Thomas White LHP(HS)
15.  Charlee Soto RHP(HS)
16.  Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B(HS)
17. Walker Martin SS(HS)
18.  Colin Houck SS(HS)
19.  Matt Shaw SS(College)
20.  Chase Davis OF(College)
21.  Nolan Schanuel 1B/OF(College)
22.  Hursten Waldrep RHP(College)
23.  Rhett Lowder RHP(College)
24.  Enrique Bradfield OF(College)
25.  Yohandy Morales 3B(College)

It continues to be a banner draft for college hitters and a terrible year for college pitchers not named Paul Skenes.  Preseason top pitcher, Chase Dollander RHP drops completely off my board as does Will Sanders RHP.  In their place, we're seeing a few HS hitters and pitchers move up although college hitters continue to dominate.

I'll plan to break it down a bit further as the we approach the draft All-Star Game weekend and try to guess who the Giants will draft at #16.

Down on the Farm: 6/25/2023

AAA:  Round Rock Express topped the Sacramento River Cats 5-4.

Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 2 for 5, SB(13).  BA= .294.
Joey Bart C- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .175.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.71.

Joey Bart has hits in his last two games.  Baby steps.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels quieted the Harrisburg Senators 4-3.

Wade Meckler RF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .355.
Vaun Brown CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .245.
Marco Luciano SS- 1 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .218.
Mason Black RHP- 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 5/2.  ERA= 4.00.
Jose Cruz RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K, Save(4).  ERA= 3.60.

Marco Luciano's slash line for June so far:  .253/.380/.507, 5 HR, 3 SB, 92 PA's.  Mason Black is unscored upon in his last 4 starts covering 17.1 IP with 25 K's and 6 BB.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds defeated the Vancouver Canadians 6-4.

Grant McCray CF- 3 for 5, SB(29).  BA= .230.
Carter Howell RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.
Jared Dupere LF- 3 for 4, 2 HR(7).  BA= .263.
Nick Sinacola RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.23.
Hunter Dula RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.05.
Tyler Myrick RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(8).  ERA= 1.13.

A:  Stockton Ports edged out the San Jose Giants 6-5.

Turner Hill LF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Thomas Gavello 3B- 1 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .237.
Zach Morgan C- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .234.
Patrick Hilson CF- 2 for 3, 3B, BB, SB(7).  BA= .222.
Gerelmi Maldonado RHP- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.29.

Game Wrap 6/25/2023: D'Backs 5 Giants 2

A baserunning mistake by Blake Sabol LF ended the Giants best and last chance for another come-from-behind win.  Key Lines:

J. D. Davis 1B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .285.  Davis was the Giants lone run producer of the day with a pair of RBI singles.

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .282.  The BA is still volatile due to a small sample and he didn't figure into the scoring but 2 more hits for Matos, who continued to glide around CF like the great ones, is an encouraging sign for the future.

Blake Sabol LF- 0 for 3, BB.  BA= .256.  With the D'Backs holding a 2-run deficit, Sabol drew a 2-out walk in the 8'th inning to put runners at first and second.  Patrick Bailey C then hit a grounder down the 3B line that hit the bag and looked like it was going to go on down the LF line creating a chance to tie the game if Sabol could come around from 1B.  Unfortunately, he didn't notice that Evan Longoria was able to field the ball and got hung up between 2'nd and 3'rd for the final out of the inning without even one run scoring.  Of course, there were two outs so the next batter would need to keep the line moving but we've seen Brandon Crawford SS get some big hits in situations like that.  Hopefully that's a learning experience for Blake Sabol.  It's great to be aggressive on the basepaths but you have to pay attention to where the ball is and what the runner in front of you is doing.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.28.  Tony D was coming off a disaster start and allowed runs in the first two innings, but settled down and ended up with a QS.  He didn't get enough run support.  Encouraging start for him looking forward.

Tristan Beck RHP- 2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.54.  Beck threw some good pitches but was more inconsistent than we've seen him recently.

The Loss left the Giants 2.5 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs and tied with the Dodgers for the final two Wild Card playoff spots 0.5 games behind the Marlins.  BTW, if you feel like the Giants have a pattern of coming out flat on Sundays, you might be right.  They are now 5-7 in Sunday games this season.

The Giants have a travel day tomorrow as they head about as far away as they can get to series against the Blue Jays in Toronto where the Giants have not played well over the years.  SP for Tuesday is listed as TBD.  I'll guess it's an Opener with Ross Stripling RHP coming in as the bulk-inning guy.

Churn Watch:  As expected, Luke Jackson RHP went on the IL with a back strain.  He was replaced on the active roster by Ross Stripling, who was also out with a back strain, coming off the IL.

Down on the Farm: 6/24/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Round Rock Express 5-2.

Ford Proctor 2B/1B- 2 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .246.
Ricardo Genoves DH- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .241.
Sean Newcomb LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.11.

Got a feeling we may see Sean Newcomb in a Giants uniform sooner than later.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Harrisburg Senators 7-2.

Vaun Brown CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .234.
Marco Luciano DH- 4 for 4, 2B.  BA= .217.
Shane Matheny 2B- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .250.
Andy Thomas 1B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .200.
Landon Roupp RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.95.
Nick Zwack LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.58.

Big game for Marco Luciano.  Hopefully he'll find some traction and keep it going.

A+:  Vancouver Canadians topped the Eugene Emeralds 4-1.

Jack Choate LHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.50.

A:  San Jose Giants pounded the Stockton Ports 7-1.

Turner Hill CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .241.
Diego Velasquez DH- 2B, Sac.  BA= .311.
Onil Perez C- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .314.
Anthony Rodriguez 3B- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .234.
Matt Higgins 1B- 1 for 4, HR(9), BB.  BA= .296.
Alexander Suarez LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .265.
Alex Cobb RHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Daniel Blair RHP- 4.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.11.

Per TwitterAlex Cobb reportedly was sitting 93-96 MPH on the FB.  Look for him to make his next start with the Giants.

Complex Performances:

Jean Carlo Sio SS(ACL, 19 yo)- 3 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .259.

Ramon Peralta 2B(ACL, 19 yo)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .273.

Sean Roby 3B(ACL, Rehab)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .143.

Luis Bermudez RHP(ACL, 19 yo)- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.  ERA= 6.46.

Melvin Adon RHP(ACL, Rehab)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(3).  ERA= 0.00.

Luis Frias CF(DSL, 18 yo)- 2 for 7, 2B, SB(7).  BA= .344.

Dario Reynoso SS(DSL, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, 2 BB, 2 SB(5).  BA= .333.

Anthony Tandron 2B(DSL, 17 yo)- 3 for 6.  BA= .304.

Raynor Arias CF(DSL, 17 yo)- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(4), BB.  BA= .404.

Moises De La Rosa DH(DSL, 18 yo)- 3 for 6, 3B.  BA= .404.

Anyelo Gonzalez 2B(DSL, 18 yo)- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .381.

Lots of exciting prospects down in the DSL but Rayner Arias looks special.  Hoping to see him promoted accordingly.  He's clearly too good for the DSL.

Game Wrap 6/14/2023: Giants 7 D'Backs 6

Luis Matos' first MLB home run was the difference in a hard fought win and which also clinched a series win over the NL West leading D'Backs.  Key Lines:

Joc Pederson DH- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .272.  Joc was in the thick of most of the Giants rallies. He drove in a run with a groundout in the first inning.  Later singled and scored on Blake Sabol's 2-out single(more on that later) and then tripled in a run and scored on Sabol's sac fly.

Micheal Conforto RF- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .239.  Conforto has stepped up the last two games in YtY's abscence.  He doubled in a run in the first inning.  After that the D'Backs clearly pitched around him twice(more on that later).

Blake Sabol LF- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .260.  Talk about stepping up.  Sabol continues to show he has a special bat which the D'Backs found out the hard way.  In the 3'rd inning, with Joc Pederson at first and 2 outs, Merrill Kelly RHP clearly pitched around Conforto to face Sabol but Sabol spanked a single to R-CF which easily scored Joc.  He later drove in Joc from 3B on a Sac Fly for his second big RBI of the game.

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .257.  Just as I was wondering if maybe Matos is a bit short on power, he pulled a 2-run HR down the LF line to give the Giants a 7-5 lead and proved to be the game-winning hit.

Keaton Winn RHP- 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.75.  Winn was lights out with a devastating FB/Split combo for 3 innings.  Then he got BABIP'd to start the 5'th with a bunt single, SB, groundball single before giving up a line drive single to drive in a run.  That brought in Sean Manaea LHP who got force-out at 2B except the on-field ump called the runner safe and it was upheld on replay despite a slow-mo video clearly showing Crawford's foot hitting the bag before the runner.  Christian Walker followed with a double to drive in the last 2 of Winn's runners. In short, Winn pitched much better than the line indicates and that FB/split combo looks like a keeper.

Rogers Bros- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  Winn's first 3 shutout innings and these 3 by Taylor and Tyler are really what won the game from the pitching side.

The Win cut the D'Backs lead over the Giants in the NL West to 1.5 games.  They remain in the top spot in the Wild Card race 0.5 games ahead of the Marlins and 1.0 games ahead of the Dodgers pending the outcome of the Dodgers game against the Astros.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP tries to bounce back from a rough last start to complete the swweeeppp facing Ryne Nelson RHP.

Down on the Farm: 6/23/2023

AAA: Round Rock Express defeated the Sacramento River Cats 8-3.

Brett Wisely SS- 1 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA= .301.

River Cats roster is depleted because most of the good players are on the Giants active roster.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Harrisburg Senators 9-8(Game 1 of DH, 8 innings).

Wade Meckler RF- 5 for 5, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .364.
Vaun Brown DH- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .225.
Marco Luciano SS- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .196.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 K.  ERA= 5.91.
Wil Jensen RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.83.
Matt Frisbee RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.35.

This was Wade Meckler's first 5-hit game of the season.  He has had three 4-hit games and four 3-hit games.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Harrisburg Senators 3-2(Game 2 of DH, 7 innings).

Logan Wyatt 1B- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .267.
Carson Seymour RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.35.
Juan Sanchez  LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 4.0.  ERA= 2.23.
Jose Cruz RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(3).  ERA= 4.15.

I didn't notice Logan Wyatt's promotion to AA.  This was his 5'th game.   Holding his own so far.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outlasted the Vancouver Canadians 2-1.

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .226.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 3 for 5.  BA= .310.
John Bertrand LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 3.66.
Ben Madison RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.13.

Someone asked about's D.  He's strictly a corner defender so the bat will have to be his ticket.  Ben Madison is quietly having a great season.  61 K's in 37.1 IP.

A:  Stockton Ports beat the San Jose Giants 7-3.

Diego Velasquez SS- 1 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .307.
Sam Delaplane RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K.  ERA= 4.85.

Complex Performances:

Donovan Walton SS(ACL, Rehab)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .379.

Saul Bautista LF(DSL, 19 yo)- 2 for 5, 3B, HR(1).  BA= .296.

Carlos Molina LHP(DSL, 18 yo)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.38.

Game Wrap 6/23/2023: Giants 8 D'Backs 5

A 5-run rally by the Giants in the 5'th inning carried the Giants to a win in the first game of a critical mid-season series against the division rival D'Backs who also happen to be in first place in the NL West.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 2 for 4. BA= .284.  LMWJ picked up where he left off 4 days ago when he felt some tightness in his side.  He did not look hampered on his swings tonight.

J. D. Davis 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .284.  Davis continues to give the Giants plus D at 3B while raking at the plate.  Hard to believe the Mets couldn't wait to get rid of him last season because he's been nothing but terrific for the Giants ever since and has largely overcome a bad rap on defense in the process.

Michael Conforto RF- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .237.  Conforto was in a significant slump going 1 for 24 in his previous 8 games.  He broke out of that tonight just in time to pick up YtY who went on the IL after experiencing more discomfort in his hammy area prior to the game.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .330.  Bailey had brutal splits against LHP's all through the minor leagues but has reversed that so far at the MLB level hitting .414 with 3 of his 4 HR's.  His 2-run blast off Joe Mantiply LHP capped the Giants scoring for the night.  It's still a small sample size but extends over a month's worth of games.

Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 12/2.  ERA= 3.16.  Webb got touched up a bit but lasted 7 innings and ended up with another QS.  Nice that he had some early run support tonight.

The Win closed the gap on the first place D'Backs to 2.5 games.  The Giants also are 0.5 games ahead of the Dodgers and Marlins for the first Wild Card playoff spot.

Ryan Walker RHP opens tomorrow afternoon against Merrill Kelly RHP who always seems to give the Giants a tough game.  Keaton Winn RHP, Tristan Beck RHP and Sean Manaea LHP should be available for multiple innings tomorrow.

Churn Watch:  Not a huge surprise that Mike Yastrzemski OF went on the IL after he felt more discomfort in the left hammy area.  Isan Diaz IF was recalled from AAA Sacramento though he played for the A San Jose Giants yesterday.

Down on the Farm: 6/22/2023

AAA:  Round Rock Express pounded the Sacramento River Cats 11-5.

Ford Proctor 1B- 1 for 3, HR(5), BB.  BA= .236.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 2.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.53.
Nick Swiney LHP- 1.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.76.

Rough day up and down the organization.

AA:  Harrisburg Senators blasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 11-3.

Marco Luciano SS- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  B .193.
Parker Dunshee RHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.86.

Pretty sad when the top hitting line of the day is 0 for 2 with a pair of walks.

A+:  Vancouver Canadians crushed the Eugene Emeralds 13-3.

Victor Bericoto DH- 1 for 4, HR(14).  BA= .303.

Again, a rough day up and down the organization.

A:  San Jose Giants destroyed the Stockton Ports 16-7.

Turner Hill LF- 2 for 6, 2B, SB(9).  BA= .231.
Onil Perez C- 2 for 5, 2 2B, HBP, SB(11).  BA= .315.
Matt Higgins 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .297.
Anthony Rodriguez DH- 2 for 5, HR(1). BB, SB(1).  BA= .250.
Patrick Hilson CF- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(6).  BA= .218.
Alexander Suarez RF- 3 for 5, 2B, SB(8).  BA= .253.
Ross Stripling RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 4.50.
Luis Moreno RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.66.

Finally and organizational win!  Rehab game for Stripling.  At one point he struck out 9 batters in a row.
7 SB's for the SJ Giants but 7 different players. Joe Ritzo tweeted that they have stolen a Cal League leading 110 bases this season with only 16 CS, also a league best.

Complex Performances:

Will Bednar RHP(ACL)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.22.  A bit better start from a rehabbing Bednar who has yet to really put up an impressive line.

Alix Hernandez RHP(ACL, 18 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.39.  18 yo

Elian Sandoval RF(ACL, 19 yo)- 2 for 2, HR(1), BB.  BA= .278.

Moises De La Rosa LF(DSL, 18 yo)- 4 for 4, SB(4).  BA= .386.

Anthony Tandron SS(DSL, 17 yo)- 3 for 5.  BA= .275.  6'3", 175 lb SS from Cuba.

Game Wrap 6/22/2023: Padres 10 Giants 0

Gary Sanchez C(Padres) avenged yesterday's plate blocking call by hitting a 3-run HR before the fans could find their seats and you had to know this game was over right then and there.  Manny Machado added a 3-run HR of his own later in the game and the Giants managed just 3 hits in the game.  Not much else to say about this one.

Sometimes it's good for winning streaks to end and when they do it's probably best to end with a catharsis game like this one rather than, say, a 1-0 loss or in some other heartbreaking fashion.  These games happen.  Start over tomorrow.

With the Loss, the Giants fell 3.5 games behind the D'Backs but remain 0.5 games ahead of the Dodgers and fall 0.5 games behind the Marlins for the first Wild Card playoff spot.

The Giants start a new series against the first place D'Backs tomorrow evening with Logan Webb RHP facing Zach Davies RHP.

Injury Update:  Good news on YtY's MRI.  No strain, some inflammation.  Hopes to only miss a couple of games.

Churn WatchSean Hjelle RHP was thanked for his stellar 4 IP last night with an option back to AAA Sacramento.  Bryce Johnson OF was recalled.

The Giants traded cash to the Phillies for Dalton Guthrie OF.  Guthrie is 27 yo.  B-R, T-R, 5'11", 160 lbs.  Drafted in round 6 in 2017.  Fangraphs rates him as having a 50 hit tool and 50 speed but only 30 game power.  He has a knack for drawing walks and has a MLB slash line of .244/.393/.358.  He's on the 40-man roster.  Mitch Haniger OF was moved to the 60-day IL to make room.

Down on the Farm: 6/21/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats vs Round Rock Express Postponed.

AA:  Harrisburg Senators vs Richmond Flying Squirrels Postponed.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds topped the Vancouver Canadians 5-1.

Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4.  BA= .291.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 1 for 3, HR(7).  BA= .215
Ghordy Santos DH- 1 for 3, HR(5).  BA= .239.
Eric Silva RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  BA= 4.72.

A:  Stockton Ports defeated the San Jose Giants 4-1.

Matt Higgins LF- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .293.
Manuel Mercedes RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 5/0.  ERA= 3.29.
Cameron Cotter RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.11.

Someone on Twitter pointed out that Mercedes is a groundball machine.  GO/AO has been over 2.00 ever stop.  Cameron Cotter was signed as a minor league FA out of indy ball in May.

Complex Performances:

Justin Bench 3B(ACL, 23 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.

Mauricio Estrella RHP(ACL, 19 yo)- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 8/0.  ERA= 7.64.  Giants have a large number of international teenagers putting up great looking lines in the complex leagues.

Ubert Mejias RHP(ACL, 22 yo)- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.32.  First pro season out of Cuba.

Game Wrap 6/21/2023: Giants 4 Padres 2

The Giants got another outstanding bulk-inning performance from a rookie pitcher and made the 4-spot they put up against Yu Darvish in the 5'th inning stand up.  Key Lines:

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .304.  They were infield hits but they count just the same.  Matos started the 4-run rally with an IF hit, stole 2B and scored on Brandon Crawford SS's Sac Fly.

Blake Sabol C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .257.  Sabol had a weird night.  His double did not figure in the scoring.  His single glanced off Xander Bogaerts SS's Glove into LF.  Later in the inning, he was out by a mile trying to score from 2B with 2 outs on Joc Pederson DH's groundball single to RF but Gary Sanchez C clearly blocked the plate forcing Sabol to go way out of his normal path to the plate.  He was initially called out and the replay umps took forever and a month of Mondays to make the call but they got it right and called interference and the run scored and the inning stayed alive for 2 more hits and runs.

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 3.  BA= .259.  YtY singled in the 3'rd run of the 5'th inning but later pulled up at 3B with what appeared to be a significant hammy strain on J. D. Davis 3B RBI single to R-CF.  After the game it was reported that He had hamstring "tightness" but he missed 15 games in May with a hammy strain so you've got to think this is going to result in an IL stint.  He's been a key cog in the Giants current win streak so this is not good.

Casey Schmitt 2B- 0 for 1, 2 BB.  BA= .262.  Schmitt has been noticeably more selective at the plate lately and he drew 2 walks in this game.  He still has a weakness for sliders in the dirt but the improved plate discipline is encouraging.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 7.79.  Hjelle showed good command of a 96 MPH fastball and a wipeout breaking ball and he stifled the Padres long enough for the Giants to get their lead.  the rest of the bullpen made it stand up.  I am a big Hjelle fan and am thrilled to see this.  He's a unique talent with his dominant height and gives opposing teams a decidedly different look.

The Win was the Giants 10'th in a row.  They move into the top Wild Card playoff spot by 0.5 games over the Marlins and 1 game over the Dodgers.  They continue to trail the D'Backs in the NL West by 2.5 games.

Alex Wood LHP tries for the 4-game swweeeppp tomorrow afternoon against Blake Snell LHP.

Tuesday, June 20, 2023

Down on the Farm: 6/20/2023

AAA:  Round Rock Express ran over the Sacramento River Cats 15-6.

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .313.
Will Wilson 2B- 2 for 2, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .232.

Will Wilson's slash line for June is .319/.421/.660 with 5 HR's.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Harrisburg Senators 3-2(11 innings).

Wade Meckler LF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .326.
Carter Aldrete 1B- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .244.
Mason Black RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.35.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.36.

Mason Black's pitching line over his last 3 starts is 0-0, 0.00, 13 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 14 K.

A+:  Vancouver Canadians pounded the Eugene Emeralds 11-4.

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 4, BB, SB(28).  BA= .231.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4.  BA= .287.
Ben Madison RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.41.

A: Stockton Ports crushed the San Jose Giants 17-5.

Onil Perez C- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(10).  BA= .313.

Complex Performances:

Jean Carlos Sio SS(ACL, 19 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .282.
Seth Corry LHP(ACL)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Samir Chires RHP(ACL, 19 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 11.81.
Dennys Rieria 2B(DSL, 18 yo)- 2 for 3, 2 HR(3), BB.  BA= .256.
Rayner Arias CF(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .412
Carlos Lopez LHP(DSL, 20 yo)- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.19.
Jose Bello RHP(DSL, 18 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.00.
Luis Frias CF(DSL, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB, SB(6).  BA= .358.
Angel Guzman RF(DSL, 17 yo)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .438.

It's a low level but encouraging to see Seth Corry posting great ratios in his rehab starts.  Seems to be about ready to be assigned to a full season league.  Rayner Arias is too good for the DSL.  I hope to see his name in ACL boxscores no later than after the All-Star break.

Game Wrap 6/20/2023: Giants 4 Padres 3

The Giants ran a familiar script as they fell behind early but kept it close and wore down the Padres bullpen in the late innings.  Joc Pederson drew a bases-loaded walk off Josh Hader LHP for a different kind of walk-off win.  Key Lines:

Joc Pederson- 1 for 4, HR(8), BB.  BA= .266.  Joc hit leadoff after LMWJ was a late scratch.  He hit the game-tying HR in the 8'th inning then drew the walk-off walk in the 9'th.

Luis Matos CF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .263.  Matos finally suffered his first MLB strikeout, but mostly put together good AB's and scored 2 runs including the game-winner after drawing a walk with one out in the 9'th.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 6/3.  ERA= 4.38.  Up and down performance.  Tony D looked sharp in the first two innings which may have been aided by glare off the batter's eye from the setting sun.  Then gave up a 2-spot in the 3'rd, then got through 2 more innings to avoid a bullpen game.

Tristan Beck RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.05.  Beck moves up the pecking order and pitches in a higher leverage situation. He responded with 3 shutout innings to keep it close and save the bullpen at the same time.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Rogers faced Matt Carpenter, Fernando Tatis, Juan Soto, Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts.  He gave up a single to Soto and Machado reached on a throwing error by Brandon Crawford SS, but he got Bogaerts to ground out to end the threat and set up the walk-off win.  Oh, and how are the Padres not running away with the division with Tatis, Soto Machado and Bogie at the top of the lineup?

With the Win, the Giants cut the D'Backs lead in the NL West to 2.5 games and close to 0.5 games behind the Marlins for the first Wild Card playoff spot.  They continue to lead the Dodgers by 1 games and stretched their lead on the Padres to 5 games. This was the Giants 9'th win in a row which I understand equals their longest win streak of 2021.

TBD takes on Yu Darvish tomorrow evening trying to win the series and stretch the win streak to 10 games.

Churn Watch:  As noted above, Lamonte Wade Jr was a late scratch with tightness in his right side.  Hopefully nothing more than that as the Giants can ill-afford to lost his lefty bat in the lineup for an extended period.

Monday, June 19, 2023

Down on the Farm: 6/19/2023

The full season leagues had their usual Monday off day.

Complex Performances:

Derwin Laya 1B(ACL, 19 yo)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .273.

Donovan Walton DH(ACL)- 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .400.  Memba Walton?  Maybe you didn't want to hear this but he's on a rehab assignment.

Ryan Reckley SS(ACL, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .237.  I think this is Reckley's first pro HR.

Guillermo Williamson LF(ACL, 19 yo)- 1 for 3, HR(5), BB.  BA= .353.  The sky's the limit for Williamson if he can continue to make enough contact to maintain a BA.

Angel Guzman LF(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .444.  Very promising young lefty hitter signed just this Jan.

Game Wrap 6/19/2023: Giants 7 Padres 4(10 innings)

Mike Yastrzemski's second home run of the game was a splash hit, walk-off, 3-run homer to extend the Giants winning streak to 8 games.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 3 for 5, 2 HR(10).  BA= .257.  Yes, he had help and while it's not possible for 1 player to singlehandedly win a MLB game, YtY came darn close tonight.  2 HR, 4 RBI's, 3 Runs.  Wow!

David Villar RHP- 1 for 3, HR(5), BB.  BA= .154.  Villar's HR was the Giants first run of the game and a critical element of the win.  Since his recall on July 14, Villar is 3 for 8 with 2 2B and a HR with a BB and only 1 K.  Much like last season when he was sent down and then recalled, he looks like a different hitter in his second gig.

Keaton Winn RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 1.93.  Talk about bulk innings!  Winn gave up a solo HR to Juan Soto in his first inning of work then shut the Padres down through the 9'th.  Again, that by itself did not win the game but the Giants likely don't win without it.  In two MLB appearances, Winn has a line of 0-0, 1.93, 9 IP, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  He'll probably ride the Sacramento shuttle the rest of this year but he's really looking like a building block for the future.

The Win allowed the Giants to keep pace withe D'Backs, 3.5 games behind in the NL West, and extend their lead on the Dodgers for the 2'nd Wild Card Playoff spot to 1 full game.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP tries to keep the winning ways going tomorrow evening facing Seth Lugo RHP.

Down on the Farm: 6/18/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats pounded the Sugar Land Space Cowboys 11-2.

Bryce Johnson RF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .305.
Brett Wisely SS- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(4).  BA= . 313.
Tyler Fitzgerald CF- 2 for 5, 2 HR(8).  BA= .307.
Isan Diaz 2B- 2 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .333.

Fitzgerald playing CF?  OK.  Cats have had at least 3 bullpen games in a row.  Their pitching is depleted by multiple promotions to the Giants to fill in for injuries.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Bowie Baysox 10-6.

Shane Matheny CF- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .260.
Carter Aldrete LF- 2 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .242.
Hayden Cantrelle 2B- 4 for 4, SB(10).  BA= .231.
Will Jensen RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.82.
Nick Zwack LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.96.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds topped the Spokane Indians 6-5.

John Bertrand LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.93.
Hunter Dula RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(5).  ERA= 2.22.

A:  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the San Jose Giants 5-3.

Turner Hill CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .246.
Zach Morgan C- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .218.
Tanner O'Tremba DH- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .279.
Jack Choate LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER,  2 BB, 5 K.  ERA= 2.30.
Daniel Blair RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.35.

Game Wrap 6/18/2023: Giants 7 Dodgers 3

The Giants backed another Quality Start by Logan Webb with run support to complete an epic, historic beatdown of the Dodgers in El Lay.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .279.  Let's see.  A hit and a walk in 5 PA's is an OBP of .400.  That will work for a leadoff hitter.

Luis Matos CF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .333.  The Dawn on the Luis Matos Era looks promising.  Reached base 8 times out of 14 PA's.  Scored 6 runs.  Made fielding CF look easy.  Many of his outs were hard hits.  His 2-run double today broke this one open extending the Giants lead from 3-2 to 5-2.  He came around to score on Blake Sabol C's single to extend it to 6-2 and the game was practically over.

Casey Schmitt 3B- 1 for 3.  BA= .266.  Schmitt took at pitch off his right forearm which appeared to be a replay of Mitch Haniger suffering a fractured ulna.  You could see a large nasty looking egg on his arm and he appeared to be in significant pain.  He came out after running the bases. Fortunately, X-rays were negative so hopefully an IL stay won't be necessary.

Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 12/1.   ERA= 3.11.   Not a great line but more than good enough with some run support.  10 of his last 11 starts have been QS's.

Luke Jackson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.23.  Jackson has been a boon to the bullpen since coming off the IL.  With John Brebbia going to the IL, he looks to play a bigger role going forward.

Scott Alexander LHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.52.  Alexander has been terrific but allowed a leadoff double and a walk.  He got one out on a FC but an error on the next batter loaded the bases.  Alexander then exited the game with an injury later reported to be a sore hamstring which he also reportedly has been bothered by for awhile.

The Win completed a crushing sweep of the Giants bitter rivals.  Not only did they jump over the Dodgers into 2'nd place in the NL West but they scored their most ever runs in a 3-game series in Dodger Stadium.  The 15-0 win on Saturday was the most lopsided loss in Dodgers franchise history....at least since they were knows as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms and it was their first sweep in LA since 2012 and we all know what happened in 2012.

The D'Backs lost so the Giants are now just 3.5 games out of first place in the NL West.  They lead the Dodgers for the 2'nd Wild Card playoff spot by 0.5 games.

The Giants return home to Oracle Park where they have not been as successful as on the road lately.  They start an important 4-game series against the Padres with Ryan Walker RHP serving as the Opener in game 1 tomorrow evening facing Michael Wacha RHP.

Churn Watch:  The Giants announced that Alex Cobb RHP will go on the IL with an oblique strain.  It's not believed to be serious and Cobb says he expects to be back close to the end of the minimum IL stay.  Keaton Winn RHP was recalled to replace him and could be available for bulk inning duty.

AAA:  Sugar Land Space Cowboys beat the Sacramento River Cats 10-3.

There were no performances of note in this game.

AA:  Bowie Baysox outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3(10 innings).

Wade Meckler LF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .326.
Brandon Martorano RF/C- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .179.
Landon Roupp RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.90.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.59.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds pounded the Spokane Indians 11-4.

Carter Howell RF- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .302.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .315.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .282.
Luis Toribio 3B- 2 for 3, HR(9), 2 BB.  BA= .248.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

A:  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes destroyed the San Jose Giants 15-2.

As you might guess from the score, there were no performances of note in this game.  Gotta say, if this was payback for the Giants destruction of the Dodgers yesterday, I'll take the major league game.

Complex Peformances:

Dario Reynoso SS(DSL)- 1 for 3, HR(1), 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .433.

Angel Guzman RF(DSL)- 2 for 4, BB, SB(1).  BA= .429.

Brayan Narvaez RHP)DSL)- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Guillermo Williamson LF(DSL)- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .355.

Ross Stripling RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.50.

Will Bednar RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.70.

Game Wrap 6/17/2023: Giants 15 Dodgers 0

Luis Matos started a 4-run rally in the 5'th inning and the Giants kept piling on for a crushing win over the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine.  Key Lines:

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .375.  We'll start with Matos because he was the guy to sparked the Giants offense against Bobby Miller RHP who looked invincible until Matos drew a leadoff walk in the 5'th.  Miller had been blowing 100 MPH fastballs past helpless looking Giants hitters through 4 innings.  Matos led off the 5'th inning with a walk which didn't seem like much.  He was the third Giants leadoff batter to reach base.  The difference here is Matos stole 2B which might have rattled the rook a bit.  Patrick Bailey C struck out on a foul tip but then Miller tried to pick Matos off 2B.  The ball glanced off something into CF and Matos scampered to 3B.  Miller then hung a curveball to Brandon Crawford who singled Matos home.   The #9 batter, Casey Schmitt 3B was HBP to put runners at 1B and 2B.  Lamonte Wade Jr 1B deposited another hung curve into the RF bullpen and the route was one.  Matos ended up reaching base 4 times and scoring 4 runs. He also made numerous running catches in CF which he made all look easy including one where he had to climb the wall to bring it down.  A great evening for Luis Matos!

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 3 for 5, HR(9), BB.  BA= .280.  3-run HR's win ballgames and LMWJ delivered that in the 5'th inning but he had two more hits and a walk driving in a total of 5 runs and scoring 3.  What a sensational season he is having!

J. D. Davis PH/DH- 2 for 3, HR(10).  BA= .291.  Well, Davis seems to have recovered from his ankle sprain enough to swing the bat and run the bases.  Kap brought him in to PH for Joc Pederson in the 6'th inning with 2 outs and the bases loaded.  Davis hit it out of the ballpark.  I mean, if 3-run HR's are winners, grand slams are crushers.  This one made the score 9-0 and erased any serious question about the outcome of the game.

Brandon Crawford SS- 4 for 4.  BA= .226.  Nice game for Crawford.  4 hits, 2 R, 2 RBI including the first run of the game.  If it seems like Crawford has been noticeably better since coming of the IL, well, he has.  .375 over his last 7 games and .341 over his last 15.

Alex Wood LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  Wood did not have his opponents overpowering stuff, but he had command of his pitches and was hitting his spots matching zeroes for 4 innings until the Giants could break through.  Very encouraging first start off the IL.

Tristan Beck RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 3.31.  Beck just keeps saving the Giants bullpen in blowout games while getting invaluable game experience in the process.  I hope we'll see him in higher leverage situations in the near future.

The Win enabled the Giants to keep pace with the first place D'Backs 4.5 games off the pace.  The narrowed the gap with the Dodgers to just 0.5 games and continue to lead the race for the 3'rd Wild Card spot by 1.5 games over the Phillies.

Churn Watch:  The good news on Wilmer Flores IF is he does not have a fracture but as suspected he went on the IL anyway for a contusion on his foot.  What we didn't suspect was an injury to John Brebbia RHP who hit the IL with a grade 2 lat strain.  That could take awhile and Brebbia has been a workhorse and a key part of the bullpen and Kap's Opener strategy.  The adds were Alex Wood off the IL and Beck recalled.

Logan Webb RHP tries for the swwweeeeepppp tomorrow vs Tony Gonsolin RHP who is coming off the IL himself.

Down on the Farm: 6/16/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Sugar Land Space Cowboys 5-3.

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .308.
Brett Wisely 2B- 1 for 3, HR(2), 2 BB.  BA= .307.
Sean Newcomb LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Why am I getting the feeling that Sean Newcomb is going to play a significant role this season, one way or another and probably sooner than later?  So far, his composite pitching line across two levels in his rehab assignment:  1-0, 1.50, 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.

AA:  Bowie Baysox topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2.

Shane Matheny 3B- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .231.
Andy Thomas DH- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .202.
Carson Seymour RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.26.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.67.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outscored the Spokane Indians 13-8.

Grant McCray CF- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .233.
Brett Auerbach 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .300.
Victor Bericoto RF- 1 for 4, HR(13), BB.  BA= .312.
Edison Mora 2B- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB. BA= .203.
Joe Kemlage LHP- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.13.

Edison Mora stays hot:  .324/.343/.794 in June.

A: Rancho Cucamonga Quakes edged out the San Jose Giants 2-1.

Diego Velasquez SS- 2 for 4, 2 SB(10).  BA= .339.
Reggie Crawford LHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.00
Hayden Wynja LHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.76.
Esmerlin Vinicio LHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.38.

Per a Twitter report, Crawford's FB ran from 96-99 MPH.

Complex Performances:

Luis Frias CF(18 yo; DSL)- 4 for 5.  BA= .425.  Frias has 8 hits in his last two games, has hit in all 8 games so far and has 5 multi-hit games.

Jose Rengel LHP(17 yo; DSL)- 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 6.00.

Game Wrap 6/16/20223: Giants 7 Dodgers 5(11 innings)

The Giants were no-hit for 6 innings by a rookie pitcher making his first MLB start after a promotion from AA, but they fought back through a series of bizarre plays and events to take an extra-inning game the Dodgers should have won.  Key Lines:

Emmet Sheehan RHP(Dodgers)- 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 2/7.  ERA= 0.00.  OK, let's get this out of the way:  1.  He's a FB pitcher who lives up in the zone.  He got multiple called strikes on pitches at least 1 inch above the electronic strike zone shown on TV.  Even the Dodgers TV announcers picked up on it.  2.  The Giants hit multiple flyball/lineouts to the warning track.  Translation:  This was a BAPIP fluke and would not have happened with a different ump or an automated ump.

Austin Slater PH/LF- 3 for 3.  BA= .431.  Once again, Kapler's penchant for subbing in a platoon hitter when the pitcher's handedness changes pays off.  Slater pinch-hit for Lamonte Wade Jr 1B in the 8'th inning with one out and a Brandon Crawford SS on 1B and kept the line moving with a single.  He ended up with 2 more hits as the game went through 11 innings.

Wilmer Flores 3B- 1 for 3 HR(7).  BA= .258.  Wilmer came up in the 7'th inning after Estrada's single.  He fouled a ball off the top of his foot but hung in to hit one of his patented pulled HR's down the LF line into the Dodger's bullpen then limped around the bases and came out of the game.  CT scan today.  Hope for no fracture.  Giants need his RH platoon bat.

Luis Matos CF- 0 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .200.  The BA is at the Mendoza Line but Matos hit the ball hard twice.  So in 8 PA's Matos has hit the ball hard 5 times and drawn 3 walks.  More hits should start falling or carrying out in the near future.

Thairo Estrada 2B- 1 for 4, SF, SB(16).  BA= .295.  Again, not much of a line but Estrada singled ahead of Wilmer's HR and his Sac Fly tied the game in the 8'th inning.

Bullpen Game- It was a full-on bullpen game so hard to single out individual performances.  Sean Manaea LHP was the "bulk-innings" guy an was great for 2.2 but was BABIP'd for 4 runs in the 5'th inning.  Camilo Doval RHP blew a Save in the 9'th on the second bloop hit RBI by the Dodgers on the night.  Taylor Rogers LHP and Jake Junis RHP were nails in extra innings.

The Play- After the Giants took a 7-5 lead in the top of the 11'th inning, the Dodgers had one out and the designated runner at 2B.  Mookie Betts hit a towering IF pop up that Casey Schmitt 3B dropped.  Jake Junis RHP picked it up and fired it past 1B into RF.  The runner at 2B, Michael Busch,  had to hold up with the ball in the air and Betts ran him down trapping him in a rundown between 3B and Home leaving Betts at 3B with 2 outs.  Junis then struck out Freddie Freeman to end the game.

Dodger Stadium- On top of the natural craziness of the game, the stadium lights kept dimming in the middle of plays to add to the sense of chaos.

Protest:  The crowd was sparse in the early innings possibly due a protest which Police and Dodger Security estimated at 2000 protesters that closed the main gates for awhile.  I'll just quote Susan Slusser's Twitters posts:

"The two protesters I talked to were both from out of state and seemed unclear on whether they were protesting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Pride Night or both."

"I heard a lot of 'love the sinner, hate the sin stuff in front of signs like Go to Hell and a diatribe, with a small child at the lectern, about 'stay away from our kids' while at the same time talking about genitals in graphic terms.  Again, the message seemed muddled."

The Win improved the Giants record to 37-32, 4.5 games behind the D'Backs in the NL West and just 1.5 games behind the Dodgers.  The Giants are currently in the third and final Wild Card spot leading the Phillies by 1.5 games and trailing the Dodgers and Marlins by 1.5.

Alex Wood LHP takes the mound this evening facing another rookie, Bobby Miller RHP.

Game Wrap 6/14/2023: Giants 8 Cardinals 5(10 innings)

The Giants marked the dawn of the Luis Matos Era by roaring back from a 5-2 deficit after 6 innings to win in overtime.  Key Lines:

Luis Matos CF- 1 for 3.  BA= .333.  Matos followed Austin Slater LF's leadoff single with another single and scored the Giants second run of the game on Patrick Bailey C's single.  Matos lined out in two later AB's so hit the ball hard 3 times in 3 PA's.

Thairo Estrada 2B- 2 for 5, SB(15).  BA= .296.  Estrada moved down to 3'rd in the lineup today(oh, the horror!). He singled twice, drove in 2 runs and scored one.  He singled in YtY who was the designated runner to start the 10'th inning then stole 2B and scored on Wilmer Flores DH/3B single to account for 2 of the Giants 3 extra-inning runs.

Mike Yastrzemski RF/CF- 2 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .254.  YtY's second HR in as many days came in the 9'th with 2 outs and 2 strikes and tied the game setting up the extra-inning win.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.31.  Tony D struck out the side in the first inning but then things went south in a hurry with Tommy Edman, the #9 hitter in the lineup hitting a grand slam HR in the 2'nd inning.  DeSclafani exited after giving up another run in the 3'rd inning and the score remained 5-2 until the 7'th inning when the Giants started their comeback.

Bullpen- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  The bullpen was nails once again.  Jake Junis RHP pitched 3 shutout innings with the Rogers Bros and Ryan Walker RHP throwing a scoreless inning each and Camilo Doval RHP recorded his 18'th Save.

The Win was the Giants 4'th in a row and put them 4 games over .400 at 36-32.  For those of you thinking this is just a hot streak and the Giants are really just a .500 team, they are 30-19 since hitting their nadir at 6-13 on April 21.  The Giants now trail the first place D'Backs by 5 games in the NL West and the Dodgers by 2.5 games pending the outcome of the Dodgers-White Sox game(Sox lead 5-4 in the 9'th inning).  The Giants lead the Marlins by 1.5 games in the race for the final Wild Card playoff spot.

The Giants get a travel day tomorrow before starting a 3-game weekend series against the Dodgers in LA.  SP's for both teams are TBD for Friday evening.

Mitch Haniger OF will undergo surgery to stabilize his fractured right forearm putting his return anytime this season in serious doubt.  J. D Davis 3B has not been placed on the IL but is expected to miss 7-10 days so it seems likely he will end up there before game time Friday when i understand the Giants can bring Tristan Beck RHP back up.

Matos came out of the game immediately after Haniger's injury and is reportedly headed to St Luis.  Meet Me in St Luis!  David Villar IF also came out of the game and is also reportedly headed to St Louis in case J. D. Davis has to go on the IL, which seems likely at this point.

AA: Bowie Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-5.

Vaun Brown CF- 0 for 4, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .267.

Juan Sanchez LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.83.

Complex Performances:

Ross Stripling RHP(ACL)- 2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 4.50.  Not a particularly encouraging appearance by Stripling but it's his first game back on rehab assignment.

Angel Guzman LF(DSL)- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .464.  17 yo B-L, T-L.

Dario Reynoso 3B- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .462.  We've called his name almost every day.  18 yo first pro season.

Frainer Mejias RHP- 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.40.  17 yo first pro season. Giants have suddenly turned on the the international pitching pipeline full blast.

Rayner Arias CF- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B, HR(3).  BA= .440.  And last but definitely not least, prized prospect Rayner Arias hits 3/4 of a cycle with a single the only missing piece.  This kid is looking special and I don't expect him to stay in the DSL much longer.  Could he jump all the way to San Jose?
