Game Wrap 7/10/2022: Giants 12 Padres 0

The Giants offense scored early and Alex Wood LHP had his best start of the season in a blowout win to close out a tough road trip on a positive note.

Wilmer Flores 2B was the hitting star of the game going 4 for 6 with 2 HR(12).  Flores had the game-winning HR in yesterday's game too so has 3 HR in his last two games.

Every position player who appeared in the game except Yermin Mercedes LF had at least one hit.  He was replaced by Luis Gonzalez PH/LF after Padres SP Mackenzie Gore LHP left the game.  Gonzalez had two hits to raise his BA to .307.

Other notable offensive performances:

Austin Slater CF- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .277.

Thairo Estrada SS- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(7).  BA= .256.

David Villar 3B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .250.

Joey Bart C- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .160.

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .231.

Alex Wood LHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 9/3.   ERA= 4.43.  The line speaks for itself.  Strongest start from Wood of the season, possibly since joining the Giants.

Yunior Marte RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.95.  Mop up duty. Somehow managed to not give up a run despite allowing 4 baserunners in 2 IP.

It was reportedly Evan Longoria 3B's idea to hold a team HR derby for battting practice before Saturday's game which seemed to loosen everybody up and remind them the game is supposed to be fun.  Maybe we'll look back at that as a watershed moment and the start of a drive to the postseason?  The two wins gave the Giants a split of the 4-game series agains the Padres and a 3-4 record for the road trip.  Not great but a whole lot better than how things looked after Friday's game.

The Giants come home on a high note to what may be the most important homestand of the season with 3 games agains the D'Backs and 4 against the BrewCrew before the All-Star Break.  This homestand and the 4 games in LA coming out of the break should determine whether the Giants are contenders or pretenders for a playoff spot and whether they will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.

Alex Cobb RHP starts the first game agains the D'Backs and Merrill Kelly RHP tomorrow evening.
