Down on the Farm: 8/30/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats edged out the El Paso Chihuahuas 2-1:

Aramis Garcia LF- 1 for 4, HR(16).  BA= .271.
Kyle Barraclough RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 11.12.
Melvin Adon RHP-1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 15.43.

Garcia has played 35 innings in LF this season over 5 games, 4 starts.  Seems like he is a viable option for back up catcher next season if Vogt moves on? After a rough start, Barraclough is whittling his ERA down.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Bowie Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3:

Johneshwy Fargas CF- 1 for 5, SB(49).  BA= .249.
Gio Brusa 1B- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .228.
Brandon Lawson RHP- 6.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.70.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.54.

Rodolfo Martinez gave up a 3-spot in the 8'th inning to ruin what started out as a no-hit bid by Brandon Lawson.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports outlasted the San Jose Giants 2-0(11 innings):

Matt Frisbee RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.17.
Camilo Doval RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.90.
Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.00.

Matt Frisbee has 154 K's against just 28 BB's in 132.1 IP over 2 levels this season.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Columbia Fireflies 7-3:

Simon Whiteman 2B- 2 for 2, 2 BB, SB(15).  BA= .280.
Sean Roby DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .190.
Franklin Labour RF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .237.
Jacob Gonzalez 1B- 2 for 4.   BA= .237.
Andres Angulo C- 2 for 4.  BA= .209.
Tyler Schimpf RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.72.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.11.
Bryce Tucker LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.35.

Jacob Gonzalez has three 2-hit games in a row and his hitting .324 over his last 10.  2019 9'th round draft pick Simon Whiteman has hit .279 with an OBP of .395 over 2 levels in his pro debut.  He's added 30 SB's.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Eugene Emeralds 4-3(11 innings):

Luis Toribio 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .400.
Tyler Flores 1B- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .261.
Abdiel Layer SS- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.
Kervin Castro RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.66.
Taylor Rashi RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Miguel Figueroa RHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.08.
Jordan Scott RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.86.

Game Wrap 8/30/2019: Giants 8 Padres 3

The top of the Giants lineup led a sustained offensive attack to back a strong pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 4, HR(18), BB.  BA= .267.  YtY should have had a triple added into this line as he hit a sharp grounder under the glove of The Hos to lead off the Giants half of the first inning and ended up at 3B.  Hos was charged with an error and probably would have fielded it 9 times out of 10, but it was a hard hit.  The error made him 0 for his last 19, but he emphatically broke out if his slump with an opposite field HR, single and BB before the night was over.

Brandon Belt 1B- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(16).  BA= .234.  Speaking of breaking out of slumps,  Belt aggressively turned on an 0-1 pitch after YtY's "triple" and hit a towering shot that landed at the back of the arcade about 10 feet inside the RF foul pole.  He later added a double and single.  He drove in 3 runs and he and YtY combined to score 6 of the Giants 8 runs. Belt is 5 for 12 over his last 3 games with homers in his last 2.  He is hitting .360(9 for 25) over his last 7 games.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .265.  The top 3 hitters in the lineup went a combined 7 for 14 with 2 2B, 2 HR, BB.  I understand folks frustration with Belt, Crawford and Posey.  Longo is no spring chicken, but he appears to be in good shape physically, has hit well and played solid D all season.  You may rightfully not like the length of his contract, but he's held up his end of the bargain this season.  First impressions die hard and I'm afraid Longo has not overcome a bad first impression set last season with Giants fans.

Buster Posey C- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .251.  Buster reached base 4 times but did not get credit for any scoring plays.  His single off the RF wall in the 7'th kept a rally going that led to another run in a SF by Kevin Pillar.  Speaking of Kevin Pillar, there was a scary moment in the first inning when he took a Dinelson Lamet pitch off the left side of his jaw that left him shaken up and spitting.  I did not see any blood or teeth come out contrary to Kuip's commentary.  Pillar stayed in the game and seemed to be OK.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.62.  Bummy immediately buried concerns about his velocity with a humming 92 MPH FB which he used to strike out the side in the first inning with 6 K's in the first 3 innings.  The W tied him with Matt Cain for most at Oracle Park with 60.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants remain 7 games off the pace for a Wild Card playoff spot.  It's probably not realistic to think they will overcome that.

Logan Webb takes the mound tonight for his third MLB start facing LHP Joey Lucchesi.

Down on the Farm: 8/29/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats pounded the Reno Aces 10-2:

Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, SB(5).  BA= .312.
Jaylin Davis RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .356.
Chris Shaw 1B- 3 for 3, 3 HR(21), HBP.  BA= .298.
Chase Johnson RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.64.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.73.
Dan Winkler RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.71.
Williams Jerez LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.71.

Monster game for Chris Shaw who has hit 28 HR's at 2 levels this season.  Anybody here prefer Brandon Belt at 1B over Shaw right now?  Mike Gerber seems to have gotten lost in the sluice box.  While others have recycled in and out of the active roster multiple times, Gerber has not gotten a whiff after an ill-fated short sample.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Erie Seawolves 9-5:

Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .216.
Joey Bart C- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(4), BB.  BA= .290.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .225.
Ryan Howard SS/3B- 1 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .222.
Jin-De Jhang DH- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .151.
Johneshwy Fargas RF- 1 for 4, HBP, 2 SB(48).  BA= .250.
Ryan Halstead RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.53.
Sam Moll LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.58.
Garrett Williams LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.67.

Big games for Joey Bart and Heliot Ramos.  Late promo to AA has gone as well or better than expected for the Giants 2 prize prospects.  Giants have a decision to make regarding minor league phase Rule 5 draftee, Sam Moll.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants whipped the Visalia Rawhide 9-5:

Shane Matheny 3B- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .390.
David Villar 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .262.
Courtney Hawkins CF- 2 for 4, HR(19).  BA= .262.
Heath Quinn RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .290.
Fabian Pena C- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .214.
Mac Marshall LHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

*********************************************************************************

A Augusta Greenjackets destroyed the Greenville Drive 11-0:

Simon Whiteman 2B- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(14).  BA= .267.
Frankie Tostado LF- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .259.
Jacob Gonzalez PR/1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .235.
Sean Roby DH- 1 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .169.
Anyesber Sivira 3B- 3 for 4.  BA= .231.
Norwith Gudino RHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 12 K's.  ERA= 0.60.
Matt Seelinger RHP- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.26.

Norwith Gudino missed 3 months of the season with injury but has been dominant when healthy.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes buried the Eugene Emeralds 10-5:

Alexander Canario CF- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .314.
Carter Aldrete 1B- 2 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .272.
Matt Malkin C- 3 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .300.

Great season for Alexander Canario at age 19.  He seems primed to withstand the rigors of the the SAL in his age 20 season next year.

Game Wrap 8/29/2019: Padres 5 Giants 3

Dereck Rodriguez got pummeled the second time through the Padres lineup and rallies in the 8'th and 9'th innings fell short for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 0 for 3.  BA= .264. YtY's hitless streak extended to 6 games.  He is 0 for 18 in that span.  He's been a bit on the streaky side.  Don't forget at one point he was spared an option back to AAA because Austin Slater was too ill to play.  I've been as captivated by his story as much as anyone.  How great is it to witness a breakout season by the grandson of a Hall of Famer from the days as a kid listening to games on the radio?  Have to remember there is probably a reason he is in his rookie season at age 29, though.  Much like Dereck Rodriguez last year, there is a better than 50% chance this is the peak season of his career.  He did make a spectacular diving catch in the second inning.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, HR(15), BB.  BA= .229.  Signs of life in Belt's bat, 4 for 11 in his last 3 games.

Mauricio Dubon 2B- 1 for 3.  BA= .200.  Gets his first MLB hit.  I'm not sure his bat plays at this level, but he showed he has the defensive chops in the 2'nd inning, laying out to snag a hard grounder to the left of 2B then getting up to throw out the runner by a large margin.  It looked like he was breaking left to cover 2B on a SB attempt which helped him get to the ball, but still a very impressive play.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.49.  DRod got through the lineup unscathed in the first 2 innings , but then gave up a single to the opposing pitcher with 1 out in the 3'rd, then Manuel Margot homered followed by doubles from Josh Naylor and The Hos.  Game pretty much over at that point.  Sadly, 5.49 is probably closer to DRod's true talent level than is career 3.90.

********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants 7 games off the pace in the Wild Card race, which is very likely too much to overcome.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner's velocity was down his last start, so will bear watching tonight as he takes on RHP Dinelson Lamet.  Giants need to be very wary of any large long term deals with him, sad to say.

Down on the Farm: 8/28/2019

AAA  Reno Aces downed the Sacramento River Cats 5-1:

Aramis Garcia C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .272.
Justin Haley RHP- 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.32.
Pat Venditte RHP/LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.12.

Look!  A Pat Venditte sighting!

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Erie Seawolves 6-4(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Johneshwy Fargas RF- 0 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .245.

Gio Brusa 1B- 1 for 1, 2 BB.  BA= .225.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.60.

Jalen Miller will be going to the Arizona Fall League.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels escaped the Erie Seawolves 4-3:

David Villar 3B- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .262.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(18).  BA= .244.
Hamlet Marte C- 2 for 4.  BA= .262.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .256.
Tristan Beck RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.51.
Jesus Tona RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.51.

Tristan Beck is showing why he was a highly touted prospect while pitching for Stanford and is making the Mark Melancon trade look better with each start.  He is going to the Arizona Fall League.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Greenville Drive 5-2:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 3 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .278.
Franklin Labour RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .247.
Ricardo Genoves C- 2 for 4.  BA= .321.
Jacob Gonzalez LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .233.
Mikey Edie CF/LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .250.
Trent Toplikar RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.02.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.44.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Eugene Emeralds 6-5:

Jeff Houghtby SS- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .245.
Armani Smith CF- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SF.  BA= .311.
Clay Helvey RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.36.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Rangers 2 eliminated the Giants Orange 2-1:

Abdiel Layer 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SB.
Edison Mora SS- 2 for 4.
Nick Avila RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.
Luis Moreno RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 10/1.

AZL playoffs are single elimination until the final series, so this closes out the Giants Orange rookie league season.

*********************************************************************************

Arizona Fall League rosters were announced yesterday.  Giants are sending the following players:

C Joey Bart
OF Heliot Ramos
2B Jalen Miller
OF Jacob Heyward
RHP Tristan Beck
RHP Frank Rubio
LHP Bryce Tucker

Giants still have one roster spot to fill.  I'm not a big fan of the AFL, but it does give players a chance to get a few more AB's/Innings of experience and gives them a chance to play with/compete with other top prospects.  Historically it has not been a great indicator of future MLB success one way or the other probably mainly due to an extremely small sample size.

Bart and Ramos are obviously the top names here.  I am most intrigued by Tristan Beck.  Hopefully he can work on polishing up one or both of his secondary pitches and get a jumpstart on next season, maybe in AA.

Down on the Farm: 8/27/2019

AAA  Reno Aces held off the Sacramento River Cats 5-4:

Francisco Pena C- 2 for 4, HR(17).  BA= .291.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 1 for 3, BB, SB(16).  BA= .285.
Conner Menez LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.84.

Cats scored single runs in the 8'th and 9'th but fell short.  Francisco Pena has been a nice 4'th catcher stash in Sacramento all season.  Will the Giants keep him around next year?  Abiatal Avelino starts his penance assignment for the baserunning brain cramp Monday night.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Erie Seawolves postponed.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants edged out the Visalia Rawhide 2-1:

Casey Meisner RHP- 6 IP,  0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.26.
Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 2.57.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 4-3:

Mikey Edie RF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(6).  BA= .246.
Seth Corry LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.66.

Congratulations to Seth Corry for being named SAL Pitcher of the Year!

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were idle.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Arizona League regular season is complete.  Giants Orange starts their playoff run today.  AZL playoffs are single elimination, so they better be ready to play.

Game Wrap 8/27/2019: D'Backs 3 Giants 2

A bizarrely tight strike zone, bad BABIP luck and faltering bullpen combined to hand the Giants the Loss of the game and the 2-game series.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(4).  BA= .229.  The Giants had 13 hard hits on the night.  Strangely enough, Brandon Belt who might have the worst BABIP luck in history, was the only Giants hitter whose hard hit balls went for hits in a weird night.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.38.  Considering his strike zone was ridiculously tight, this was a strong performance by the Shark(in fairness, Mike Leake had the same strike zone and threw just 3 more pitches in 2.1 more IP).  This game was proof that a tight strike zone does not necessarily translate into a high scoring game.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 0.00.  A dream come true!  I have wanted to see Rogers pitch in the majors for the longest time.  It finally happened and man, he did not disappoint!  3 soft groundball outs later and Kuip was gushing about his "new favorite pitcher" and Kruk was grudgingly agreeing that the "submanweenie" kid looked really good.  He only threw 11 pitches and I would have loved to see him go another inning, but with the Giants trailing, he was lifted for a PH in the bottom of the 8'th inning.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants to 5.5 games behind the Cubbies in the Wild Card race which is a lot of ground to make up in a little over a month.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get an unusual Wednesday off at home today before starting a 4-game home series against the Padres on Thursday with Dereck Rodriguez scheduled to face Cowboy Chris Paddack.

*********************************************************************************

Notes from the Sluice Box:

The Giants made a bunch of moves before the game.  2B Scooter Gennett was released and hit the road.  Trevor Gott hit the IL with a Flexor Strain and Grade 1 UCL Sprain.  IF Abiatal Avelino paid the price for running through Ron Wotus' stop sign Monday night and got shipped back to Sacramento, which seems.....rather harsh.

The corresponding moves were bringing RHP Tyler Rogers up as well as IF Mauricio Dubon and OF Joey Rickard is back.  Dubon did not play in his first game on an MLB Active Roster, but I can't see much reason to have him up if he's going to just ride the pine.

Down on the Farm: 8/26/2019

AAA  Reno Aces pounded the Sacramento River Cats 9-5:

Mauricio Dubon SS- 1 for 5, HR(20).  BA= .302.
Cristhian Adames 3B- 2 for 4, 3B, SB(2).  BA= .299.
Johnny Cueto RHP- 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.23.
Kyle Barraclough RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 13.50.

Johnny Cueto said after the game he needs to pitch more before being activated.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Erie Seawolves 7-6:

Bryce Johnson LF- 3 for 5.  BA= .249.
Joey Bart C- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .259.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .217.
Zach Houchins 3B- 2 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .242.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.08.
Sam Moll LHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.65.
Jamie Callahan RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

It's taken awhile, but Joey Bart and Heliot Ramos seem to be acclimating to AA.  Hopefully this sets them up for a strong start next season.  Giants are going to have some interesting roster decisions this winter.  Sam Moll was a minor league phase Rule 5 draft pick, which I think makes him a minor league FA this winter if he's not added to the 40 man roster.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants sank the Stockton Ports 5-1:

Shane Matheny 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .296.

Olbis Parra RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.31.
Frank Rubio RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.97.

*********************************************************************************

Ricardo Genoves C- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .306.
Jacob Gonzalez DH- 1 for 3, HR(9), BB.  BA= .229.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 1.23.
Preston Tucker RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.59.

The Big Kid from Taiwan has 18 K's and 2 BB's in 13 IP over his last 2 starts.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Vancouver Canadians buried the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 9-1:

Alexander Canario DH- 2 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .300.
Jeff Houghtby SS- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .243.
Tyler Wyatt 3B- 2 for 4.  BA- .357.

Alexander Canario has lightning in his bat.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL Giants Black edged out the Cubs 2 2-1:

George Bell LF- 1 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .234.
Bryce Fehmel RHP- 3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.29.
Jose Cruz RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.50.

This was the final day of the AZL regular season.  Giants Black does not advance to the postseason.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Athletics Gold defeated the Giants Orange 5-1:

Edison Mora SS- 2 for 3, 2 SB(11).  BA= .250.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.77.

Giants Orange advances to the AZL postseason and even draws a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Game Wrap 8/26/2019: D'Backs 6 Giants 4

A fielding error, a baserunning mistake and a disappointing bullpen performance ruined what could have been a winning start by Tyler Beede.  Key Lines:

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, E.  BA= .263.  Longo continued his hot hitting but muffed a grounder while playing out of his normal position in a shift.  The 2-out error in the 6'th opened the door for 2 unearned runs and an exit by Tyler Beede one out short of a Quality Start.  BTW, I wish Commenters would not disagree with things I don't say.  I did not say Farhan Zaidi should not try to trade Evan Longoria this offseason.  What I did say is Longo has trade value and Farhan does not have to give him away and definitely does not have to pay a team to take him.

BTW, the Giants actually do not have ANY albatross contracts going forward.  Their projected 40 man CBT Payroll for 2020 is $91 M under the Tax Threshold per Cot's' Contracts website and continues to shrink in future seasons.  They have more than enough resources to add whatever they need to future rosters.  Also BTW, we don't have updated numbers yet, but as of April 11, the Giants were approximately $30 M under the threshold.  I sure that has shrunk a little with all the roster churning, but only by a few $M.  Maybe saving that money is a good thing, but the Giants did not maximize their financial leverage this year in constructing the roster and doing so would not have jeopardized financial flexibility going forward.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .262.  Pillar had the only XBH for the Giants.  He scored a run and drove in one.

Brandon Crawford SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .236.  Crawford's 3 hits did not contribute to the scoring, but he also made scintillating catch in mid-CF on a ball Kevin Pillar did not see in the lights.  Crawford is hitting .478 over his last 7 games and .306 over his last 15.

Abiatal Avelino LF- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .286.  Avelino drew a walk and had an RBI single and made a sensational throw from LF to almost nail a runner at home, but he also ran through a stop sign at 3B and got thrown out at home to kill a budding rally.  He came out of the game on a double switch after that and was parked next to a coach in the dugout.

Buster Posey C- 0 for 5.  BA= .246.  Buster has always been on the streaky side, but he looks more lost at the plate than I have ever seen him.  BA= .129 over his last 7 games, .186 over his last 15 and .226 over his last 30.

Tyler Beede RHP- 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 5.56.  Beede was sharp and seemed to be getting stronger as the game went on while inducing many GB outs.  Another GB should have ended the 6'th inning but the bobble by Longo opened the door for more and Beede did not survive the inning.  Shows how far the ripple effects from a single error can go.

Trevor Gott RHP- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.44.  Gott was taken out in the middle of an AB with forearm tightness.  He's been a mainstay of the bullpen this season.

Shane Matheny entered the game as PR for Sandro Fabian after Fabian lead of the game with a HBP. Hopefully just precautionary. Kind of weird that the 3 players who had huge multi-hit games all ended the day with BA's of .261.

DSL Giants season ended with yesterday's game.

Game Wrap 8/25/2019: Giants 5 A's 4

Donovan Solano and Evan Longoria were the offensive stars and the bullpen picked up SP Logan Webb with a lockdown 4.1 IP waking up the echoes of the first four months of the season.  Key Lines:

Donovan Solano 2B- 4 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .349.  Solano got on base 5 times from the top of the lineup but only scored one run while also driving in one.  Boch/Farhan need to consider making Solano the everyday 2B, at least until he cools off.  It's not like Scooter Gennett is setting the league on fire.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, HR(17).  BA= .260.  Longo's longball put him past last year's season total.  He's hitting .321 over his last 7 games, .361 over his last 15 and .333 over his last 30.  Not sure why anyone would want the Giants to put him on waivers let alone pay for someone to take him.

What a lot of folks don't realize about Longo is his contract is actually quite reasonable even with it's length.  At the time of the trade, he had $88 M remaining on his contract.  The Rays took on $14.5 M and there is a $5 M buyout for 2023.  That leaves $68.5 M for the intervening 5 years which comes to an AAV of $13.5 M.  In other words, the Giants are paying him to average just about 1.8 fWAR/yr.  He didn't produce that last year in a transition year interrupted by a fractured hand which undoubtedly impacted him all season but he's already covered it for this season and is currently playing as well as he ever has.  If Farhan isn't diggin' the length of Longo's contract, he should easily find a buyer this winter and actually get something of value in return, but it would also be very reasonable to just hold onto him and get more 3B goodness out of him for the Giants.  Q: Who do you see as an upgrade out there? There is definitely not reason at all to dump him onto the waiver wire.

Logan Webb RHP- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 4.66.  Not a stellar second start, but not a disaster either.  Webb ran into trouble in the 2'nd inning with one out giving up a HR, double, double and single for a 3-spot before working his way out of it.  He gave up a second dinger to Mark Canha in the 4'th, then, with 2-outs in the 5'th inning a single, HBP and Walk brought Bochy out with the hook.  Positives are the poise to get out of the second inning and and the strong GO/AO.

Bullpen- 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  Jandel Gustave got out of the 5'th inning jam by striking out Canha but then started the 6'th with 2 walks.  Sam Coonrod came in and calmly got a GIDP and a K to end the threat. It was smooth sailing the rest of the way as Reyes Moronta, Tony Watson and Will Smith all pitched scoreless frames with Smith recording his 30'th Save after the Giants took the lead in the 8'th inning.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants gained a full game on the Cubs in the race for the second Wild Card playoff spot for the second straight game and now trail by 4 games compared to 6 after Friday night.  Does this remind anyone else of Brian Sabean's infamous "cockroaches" simile in 2010?

Carlos Cuevas CF- 0 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(12).  BA= .153.

Game Wrap 8/24/2019: Giants 10 A's 5

Madison Bumgarner was not at his best and the bullpen was less than stellar, but the Giants put up an 8-run rally in the 8'th inning capped by Steven Vogt's 3-run HR to win going away.  Key Lines:

Steven Vogt DH- 1 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .280.  Vogt got a nice reception from the crowd of 53,000 at the Coliseum and the Giants actually had a DH who made the lineup better than if they just let Bummy hit for himself.  What a concept!

Alex Dickerson LF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .328.  Dickerson is the guy who turned the Giants season around when he arrived on June 21.  He's starting to heat up again with 5 hits in 14 AB over his last 3 games.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, HBP.  BA= .257.  Longo showed some resourcefulness at the plate when he hit one off the fists into CF to drive in the Giants 2'nd run of the game.  He later singled during the 8'th inning rally.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(11).  BA= .260.  Pillar's 2-run double in the 8'th is what really broke this game open several batters before Steven Vogt came to the plate.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 5, HR(10).  BA= .230.  Crawford has found a little hot streak here going 5 for 10 over his last 3 games.  He poked an opposite field drive that sliced around the LF foul pole in the 5'th for the Giants first run and of course he singled in the 8'th inning rally.  And he reached double digits in HR's for the 6'th year in a row.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.71.  Not a terrible start but not up to Bummy's standards.  His velocity seemed to be down which is something to watch going forward.

AAA  Sacramento River Cats played pepper with the field in a win over the El Paso Chihuahuas 11-5:

Mauricio Dubon SS- 3 for 5, BB.  BA= .305.
Joey Rickard LF- 4 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .366.
Mike Gerber RF/CF- 4 for 6, 2B.  BA= .318.
Aramis Garcia 1B- 2 for 5.  BA= .273.
Christhian Adames 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .295.
Justin Haley RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

16 singles in 18 hits with 4 BB's for the Cats.  The other two hits were doubles.  Mauricio Dubon had his 6'th multi-hit game out of his last 10.  Four of those were 3-hit games and one was a 4-hit game.  He's hitting .422 over his last 10.

*********************************************************************************
AA  Akron Rubber Ducks outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3(10 innings):

Joey Bart DH- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .213.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.43.

Joey Bart has struggled to make contact in the EL with 15 K's in 50 PA, but has shown power with 3 HR's in the same span.

A+ San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports 3-1:

Olbis Parra RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K,  ERA= 2.38.

Tristan Beck is looking more and more like a savvy pickup in the Mark Melancon trade.  At this point I would think he would easily be in my Top 50 Giants prospects, possibly top 30.

Dan Winkler RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.93.

I would like to see Mauricio Dubon and Jaylin Davis get extended auditions for next season in SF in September.  Maybe Aramis Garcia too?

Heliot Ramos seems to be finding traction in AA with three 2-hit games out of his last 4, 6 for 18 with 2 2B, HR, 2 BB.  A truly remarkable season for the 19 yo Heliot who has to be flying up prospect rankings.

Game Wrap 8/22/2019: Cubs 1 Giants 0

I can write up this with 3 words:  Shark got Cained.  Key Lines:

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 3.44.  Just a few stats:  This was Shark's 5'th start of 7 or more innings and his 10'th QS.  His ERA over 4 games in August is 1.85 after a 2.09 in 6 July starts.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss drops the Giants to 5.5 games behind the Cubs for the second Wild Card playoff spot.  Gotta think it's not a great bet that they will overcome that deficit.  I guess you have to say the Cubs were the better team but how much better?  Giants lose the 3 games by a total of 4 Runs.  In one game they scored 11 runs and lost by 1 run.  In the next, they allowed just 1 run and lost by 1 run.  As Vin Scully would say, "go figure!"

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get a rare Friday off at home before starting a 2-game road series in Oakland which allows them to sleep at home.

Comments on Comments:

I agree with the commenter who is happy with the season.  An emotional roller-coaster for sure, but that's what makes the game fun.  It's been fascinating to see Farhan Zaidi's roster churn strategy in action.  I can't say I am completely on board with it or with him as GM, but he's uncovered some gems, particularly Mike Yastrzemski, and how great is it to witness the grandson of a Hall of Fame player from when I was a kid have a breakout season of his own?  I continue to believe that with a better offseason this team could have gotten off to a much better start and might well be higher in the standings.  A stronger offseason would not have precluded the roster churning and dumpster diving to upgrade the marginal roster spots.  I also believe he failed in an attempt to have it both ways at the trade deadline and ended up with a weaker team for this year although dumping Melancon's contract creates flexibility for next season and he made some interesting prospect acquisitions.  So far, Zaidi's performance as GM is inconsistent but with some optimism that some of his moves have laid the groundwork better ones in the future.  And yeah, it's been a fun season so far.

There is plenty of blame to go around for last night's 12-11 loss.  You cannot hang it on any one player and the pitching deserves the lion's share of the blame, but Austin Slater did get thrown out at 3B by about 10 feet and the next batter did hit a double and the Giants did lose by 1 run.  Just sayin'.

Tyler Cyr RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.12.

I believe this was the completion of a the suspended game from 8/20.

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .208.

Gio Brusa LF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(12).  BA= .233.

Kai-Wai Teng RHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.68.

Dominant start by the big kid from Taiwan who came from the Twins in the Sam Dyson trade.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes downed the Boise Hawks 4-1(6 innings):

Alexander Canario DH- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .299.

Rookie AZL  Giants Orange crushed the Mariners 7-2:

Luis Matos CF- 3 for 4.  BA= .750.
Javeyon Williams LF- 3 for 4, SB(18).  BA= .281.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 2 for 5, SB(1).  BA= .400.
Abdiel Layer 2B- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .291.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.90.
Kanoa Pagan RHP- 2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 6.14.

Giants Orange gets reinforcements with early promotions for Luis Matos and Victor Bericoto from the DSL.  Maybe they are just better than any DSL prospects in the last 20 years, but THAT never happened during the Sabean/Evans era. Kids didn't seem to be intimidated by the move stateside as they make an immediate impact.

DSL  Tigers2 defeated the Giants 7-4(10 innings):

Jose Hernandez LF- 2 for 3, 2B, SB(3).  BA= .253.

3'rd multihit game in a row for Hernandez.

Game Wrap 8/21/2019: Cubs 12 Giants 11

The Giants came storming back from an early deficit to engage the Cubs in a classic Wrigley Field slugfest only to lose the bullpen game in the end.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(17).  BA= .282.  Yep, I think we have our Max Muncy only maybe better.  Not only did YtY come up a triple short of a cycle, but he got an assist at home plate and held runners with a quick, off balance throw to a relay man for 2 very fine defensive plays.  What we're seeing at the plate is starting to be a big enough sample size to not be a fluke.  He's slashing .304/.351/.739 in August after a .316/.356/.570 in July.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, HR(16), BB.  BA= .257.  Longo is slashing .309/.353/.591 over his last 30 games.  If I am doing my calculations right, the Giants are paying him an AAV of $11.7 M now and for the next 3 seasons with a $14 M option for 2023 and a $5 M buyout.  That seems tradable this offseason or not a bad deal for the Giants if they keep him.  I'll guess that Farhan will unload the contract this offseason if he has the chance.  Question then is who replaces him at 3B?

Alex Dickerson LF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .328.  Dick has been slumping since coming off the IL, but maybe he's finding his stroke again?

Steven Vogt C- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .283.  Steven Vogt ignited the 5-run rally in the 6'th with a monster HR to RF.  At this point, he should probably be the strong side of a strict L-R platoon with Buster.  He's a FA at the end of this season.

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 5, HR(19).  BA= .261.  6'th HR in August as Pillar threatens to become the first of hopefully several Giants hitters to get at least 20 on the season.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .227.  Crawford's bat showing signs of life with his second 2-hit game out of 3.

Austin Slater PH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .302.  Slater shot one into the RF corner to drive in 2 runs but was thrown out at 3B when he saw the throw going home.  That baserunning mistake may have cost the Giants the game as YtY followed with a booming double off the CF wall.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.26.  Young Dereck was not able to keep the magic going.  It is very possible that 2018 was his peak season.

Jandel Gustave RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.32.  Gustave is suddenly the Giants best pitcher out of the bullpen, but Bochy expressed a fear of overuse as he is coming off TJ surgery.  Overall the bullpen gave up 5 runs in 5 IP.

The Loss dropped the Giants 5.5 games behind the Cubs in the Wild Card race.

Down on the Farm: 8/20/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats smashed the Albuquerque Isotopes 9-2:

Mauricio Dubon SS- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(19).  BA= .300.
Jaylin Davis RF- 2 for 3, HR(9), BB.  BA= .390.
Christhian Adames 3B- 1 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .280.
Levi Michael 2B- 1 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .249.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.76.
Burch Smith RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.28.

Is Mauricio Dubon next season's Opening Day 2B?  Giants have to want to see if Jaylin Davis is for real at the MLB level at some point, right?

Game Wrap 8/20/2019: Giants 5 Giants 3

Austin Slater hit a 2-run HR and Kevin Pillar added a solo shot, but that only kept pace with 3 solo dingers allowed by SP Tyler Beede.  The Cubs added two runs against a hapless bullpen and the Giant started what is probably the linchpin series of the season with a loss.  Key Lines:

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 4, HR(18).  BA= .261.  From now until the end of the season, each time Kevin Pillar hits a HR, he sets a new personal best for HR's in a season.

Austin Slater RF- 1 for 3, HR(4).  BA= .295.  Slater is 4 for 9 over his last 3 games and 9 for 19 over his last 7.

Tyler Beede RHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, 3 HR.  ERA= 5.82.  Perhaps the most remarkable part of this line is that he gave up 3 walks, yet all 3 HR's were solo shots.  Michael Morse commented after the game that his mistakes tend to be right down the middle of the strike zone and MLB hitters are going to punish that.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants to 4.5 games behind the Cubs for the second Wild Card playoff spot.  Had they won, they would be just 2.5 games behind so there is a 2 game swing to each game of this critical series.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants likely have to win tonight to realistically stay in the Wild Card race.  Dereck Rodriguez gets the critical start facing Yu Darvish.

*********************************************************************************

Blogger's Note:  I will not allow this blog to be used as a forum for Bochy Bashing or Belt Bashing or any other type of bashing.  Bruce Bochy is not perfect and is not above criticism, but he is deservedly a HOF manager who is one of only 10 managers in the entire history of MLB to win 3 WS championship.  I sometimes critique decisions he makes and you can too. You cannot come in here and make unfair, demonstrably false, statements like "the Giants won those championship in spite of him" or "he refuses play younger players."  There are just too many examples of players who broke in and established successful MLB careers under Bruce Bochy to make that caricature of him true.  If that is type of thing you are coming here to write in the comments, save you precious time.  It's not going to get published!

Down on the Farm: 8/19/2019

AAA  Albuquerque Isotopes burned the Sacramento River Cats 4-1:

Mike Gerber RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(26).  BA= .317.
Aramis Garcia C- 2 for 4.  BA= .272.
Kyle Barraclough RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 31.50.

Mike Gerber deserves some kind of an award for perseverance as he has raked all season for the River Cats.  He didn't look good in a MLB trial, but it was a miniscule sample size.  Does he ever get another shot?  It will take awhile for Kyle Barraclough to whittle that ERA down.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels escaped the Erie Seawolves 7-3(10 innings):

Johneshwy Fargas RF- 1 for 3, BB, Sac.  BA= .251.
Heliot Ramos DH- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .205.
Joey Bart C- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .206.
Jacob Heyward PH- 1 for 1, HR(10).  BA= .219.
Ryan Halstead RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.52.
Sam Wolff RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.83.

Jacob Heyward hit a walkoff grand slam HR in the bottom of the 10'th inning.  Hopefully this game gives Heliot Ramos and Joey Bart some traction, but IMO, the point of these late callups is not really what they do this season but what they will hopefully do next season.

Game Wrap 8/18/2019: D'Backs 6 Giants 1

This game turned on 1 missed defensive play in the first inning.  From then on, the Giants were never in contention.  Key Lines:

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.72.  So, Bummy got two quick outs in the first inning, but the a double/Error put a runner at 3B and a walk put runners at first and third.  Adam Jones came up and hit a sinking liner to CF that Pillar tried to make one of his patented diving catches on.  He came up an inch short and the ball skidded past him to the warning track for a 2-run triple.  Jones then scored on another single.  Not blaming Pillar or wanting him to become less aggressive, but he makes that catch and Bummy gets out of the first inning unscathed and it's a completely different ballgame the rest of the way.  As you can see from the line, he was dominant.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants to 3.5 games behind the Cubs for the second Wild Card Playoff spot.  Guess who the next series is against.

Game Wrap 8/17/2019: Giants 11 D'Backs 6

Logan Webb shook off a shaky first inning and dominated for the next four while Brandon Belt supplied the power in an 18-hit attack with a grand slam HR in the 2'nd inning to make things easier for the kid.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF/LF- 3 for 6.  BA= .278.  YtY traded 3 HR's for 3 singles.  He and Steven Vogt combined to go 5 for 12 from the top two spots in the lineup, yet neither player figured in the scoring.

Kevin Pillar CF- 5 for 5, 2B.  BA= .263.  Pillar has the first 5-hit game of his career and pushes his BA above .260.  The BA of .263 includes 1 for 16 as a Blue Jay.  He is hitting .271 in a Giants uniform.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 5, HR(14).  BA= .232.  Belt has been making better contact this series and it paid off bigly tonight with the grand slam HR in the 2'nd to give Logan Webb a lead he did not relinquish.  During the postgame interview, Belt made is pretty clear he doesn't dig hitting in Oracle Park attributing his success to "just a better park to hit in."

Austin Slater PH/RF- 2 for 3.  BA= .293.  Slater is red hot, hitting .389 over his last 7 games and .350 over his last 15.  His .293 BA comes with a .407 OBP.  Still a SSS, but maybe he's finally found the traction he lost when he was injured in 2017?  He also made a couple more diving catches and started a relay that nailed Eduardo Escobar who for some reason was trying to stretch a double into a triple for the final out of the game.

Logan Webb RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 1.80.  Webb's strike out pitches:  1 FB on the outside corner at the knees, 1 FB up in the zone, 3 split changes that reminded me of peak Tim Lincecum and 2 curveballs the dived out of the zone.  Kid was electric after the first inning and most definitely earned himself another big league start and I can't wait for it!

Jandel Gustave RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.50.  Gustave just casually throws 97 MPH darts without any discernible effort.  He is rapidly climbing Bochy's RP depth chart.

Wrap on the Alternate Universe post:  I got one very rude response that won't get posted basically saying I am crazy to think any free agents would have signed with the Giants over the offseason.  Well, of the 3 players I mentioned, Adam Jones might have been a tough sell, but Domingo Santana was available by trade and did not cost the Mariners any top prospects, and I am pretty sure Dallas Keuchal would be happy to pitch in Oracle Park. If they acquired those players in the offseason would it have been enough to avoid the disastrous April and May?  We'll never know, but I don't think it's a stretch to think it might.  Also, did anyone notice that I actually had quite a few positive things to say about Farhan Zaidi in the post?

Thoughts on Alternate Universes

So, a couple of questions popped up in the Comments today(I still haven't figured out how to log into my own blog to add my own comments, which shows you just how technologically challenge I am):

Q1:  Does anyone believe the Giants would be over .500 now if Zaidi had not come?

Q2:  Where would we be without all the additions that Farhan has made?

I suspect both of those questions came from the same person and I also suspect they are trolling me, but I'll bite anyway because they are interesting questions to ponder.  Alternate universes are both fun and frustrating.  Fun to speculate on what might have been(my favorites of all time are what if John and Robert Kennedy had not been assassinated?). What if Willie Mays had not served 2 years in the military and played most of his home games in Candlestick Park are also big faves of mine).  The frustration comes from never being able to fully exhaust every permutation of subsequent events or to test your theories and see if they pan out.

Since the start of this season, Farhan Zaidi's sluice box of a roster has definitely turned up a few nuggets and those nuggets are shining brightly as I write this.  Mike Yastrzemski is a great story and is looking more and more like the "Max Muncy" pick up we all started dreaming about when Farhan took the GM job, except YtY is an even better all around player than Max Muncy.  I'll give him credit it for Kevin Pillar whose HR power did not crater when he came from Rogers Center to Oracle Park.  Donovan Solano has been a wonderful backup middle infielder and Steven Vogt has emerged as an upgrade at reserve catcher.  So, Farhan definitely has his successes to point to and deserves the credit for those.  As for his Trade Deadline dealings, Scooter Gennett seems like an upgrade on Joe Panik and cost nothing, and Farhan either was very good or very lucky to get the Braves to take most of Mark Melancon's remaining contract.  I'm happy to give him the credit for that too.

Of course you could also ask the question of where this team would be without Bruce Bochy's steady hand in holding the clubhouse together and his masterful management of the bullpen.  Other factors to consider are what Farhan did not do in the offseason and what he has not done since, as well as what another GM(we'll say Bobby Evans) might have done instead. We can ask if the Giants would be over .500 with a different GM and where they would be without all the post-Opening Day additions, but that also raises the question of why all those post-Opening Day additions were necessary.

OK, it's just my opinion, but Farhan's offseason was a complete failure, and yes he has an excuse as he was hired late in the offseason cycle.  But don't forget his Opening Day Roster included Conner Joe and another OF who I can't even remember his name.  Erik Kratz was the backup catcher.  I also don't remember who the reserve MI was, but it wasn't Donovan Solano.  Does anyone here believe Bobby Evans would not have been much more aggressive about putting together a roster that was ready to compete on Opening Day?  Where would this team be if Domingo Santana, Adam Jones and Dallas Keuchal had been on the Opening Day roster just to name three, and yes, they were all available for prices the Giants could afford.

As for the Trade Deadline, I've already talked about how much I like the moves Farhan made, but there were moves he didn't make that may still come back to haunt him such as bringing in a veteran SP or two to bolster a rotation that currently has exactly 1 near-ace and 1 semi-reliable SP.  I'll also say the farm system is looking a lot better than it did at the beginning of the season. How much of that is due to Farhan's player development ideas and how much is the normal progression of players who were already in the organization when he became GM is open to question.  It's definitely not due to prospects he signed and drafted(OK, maybe Jaylin Davis can be considered a prospect and maybe he is someone to dream on).

In conclusion, do I believe the Giants would be over .500 if Zaidi had not come?  I don't know, but I think it is definitely possible.

Down on the Farm: 8/16/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats crushed the Reno Aces 17-7:

Jaylin Davis RF- 3 for 5, 3 HR(6), BB.  BA= .375.
Chris Shaw 1B- 3 for 6, HR(16).  BA= .299.

Aramis Garcia C- 4 for 5, 2B, HBP.  BA= .263.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 5, HR(12), BB.  BA= .288.

More sillyball from the PCL, but it does seem like the Giants are going to want to see what they have in Jaylin Davis at the MLB level at some point.

Game Wrap 8/16/2019: Giants 10 D'Backs 9(11 innings)

OK, where to start?  It was the end of a long week and a longer day.  I was so tired I was feeling physically ill and trying to stay awake to watch the game was downright painful.  Jeff Samardzija was cruising into the bottom of the 6'th inning with a 4-1 lead.  I decided to pack it in and get some sleep. When I woke up a few hours later and checked the final score.....holy Toledo!  5.5 innings, 8 HR's and 14 runs later, the Giants escaped with a 10-9 win in 11 innings.  Oh, and Mike Yastrzemski tied his HOF granddad for 3-homer games in their careers.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF/LF- 3 for 6, 3 HR(16).  BA= .272.  Again, where to start?  What are we witnessing here?  What a story!  There is the legacy name.  The years of kicking around the Orioles farm system.  YtY just did something his HOF grandad only did once in his very long career.  First 3- homer game since Jarrett Parker.....hmm.....maybe we shouldn't be mentioning that part as we all know what became of Jarrett Parker.  Gotta say, this just has a different look and a different feel to it than when Jarrett Parker went off on the A's at the Colisseum.  This just feels more sustainable.  Not the 3 HR game of course, but the being a very good player for years to come, that part feels sustainable.  We'll see.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 4, 2 HR(17), BB.  BA= .255.  Pillar just passed his previous career high in HR's.  Scoff at the WAR numbers.  Pillar is hitting HR's and catching balls in CF which is what the Giants got him for.  This season started turning around when Farhan traded for Kevin Pillar and I can see why the fans in Toronto loved the guy.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, HR(13), BB.  BA= .229.  Belt has been driving balls a bit better the last few games and one finally went out of the park for him to get the Giants scoring started in the 3'rd inning.  This would be a great time for Belt to go on a hot streak.

Donovan Solano SS- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .338.  Solano took over at SS on a double switch after Brandon Crawford went 0 for 2.  The Giants may be facing some tough decisions on Crawford.  At the very least, it seems like he should be in a strict L-R platoon with Solano, at least until Solano cools off.  On top of that, it's not hard to see Abiatal Avelino or Mauricio Dubon as more appealing options next year.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.54.  Shark gave up his obligatory first inning HR, a leadoff HR by Ketel Marte, actually, then settled down and cruised into the 6'th.  HOF Manager Bruce Bochy had a quick hook after a double and walk.  Fernando Abad and Reyes Moronta allowed one inherited runner to score but the timing of Samardzija's departure likely had no impact on the final outcome of the game as Tony Watson would have likely pitched the 8'th inning anyway.  And who knows what Shark would have done had he stayed in the game in the 6'th?  It was probably the right call by Boch to take him out.

Tony Watson LHP- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.50.  Watson has hit a rough patch giving up 9 ER in 1 IP over his last 3 appearances.  This was his first appearance since 8/11 so it's not from overwork.  Maybe underwork?  He's probably not the best choice for the 8'th inning for the time being, but Bochy has a long history of stubbornness about bullpen roles once he settles on them and he is a HOF Manager after all.

Will Smith LHP- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.80.  This is the second appearance in three that Smith has gone more than 1 inning and he seems to be starting to leak oil too.  The damage came in the 10'th inning on 2 HR's, what else?  But Boch brought in Trevor Gott to get the last out in 11'th and it was Gott who got credit for the Save.  Probably a one-off for now, but a situation to keep an eye on.  Look for the bullpen to be more matchup driven the rest of the way.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants now trail the Cubs and Phillies by 2.5 games in the race for the second Wild Card playoff spot.  In the process, they passed the D'Backs by a game and trail the BrewCrew by 1.5 games and the Mets by 0.5.

*********************************************************************************

Logan Webb makes his MLB debut today against fellow rookie RHP Taylor Clarke.  Giants probably had to rush Webb a bit more than they wanted, but the pitching line for his last game for Sacramento was stellar.

Down on the Farm: 8/15/2019

AAA  Reno Aces trumped the Sacramento River Cats 6-5(hmmm....that word is never going to have quite the same meaning again):

Mauricio Dubon SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .292.
Jaylin Davis RF- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .349.
Abiatal Avelino 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(11), SB(15).  BA= .287.
Burch Smith RHP- 4.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.20.
Dan Winkler RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.59.
Melvin Adon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 12.46.

Mauricio Dubon is hitting just .250 since the trade, but .286 over his last 10 games.  Abiatal Avelino has been remarkably consistent all season.  Hitting .297 over his last 10 games, .286 pre All-Star and .290 post All-Star.  0 ER is nice for Burch Smith, but not much reason for optimism in the rest of the line.

Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= .000.

Manuel Geraldo is hitting .310 over his last 10 games.  Courtney Hawkins is hitting .279 with 6 HR's over his last 10 games.  Johnny Cueto and Patrick Ruotolo on the comeback trail.

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .200.
Frankie Tostado LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .261.
Logan Wyatt 1B- 1 for 2, 2B, 3 BB.  BA= .417.
Sean Roby DH- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .133.
Andres Angulo C- 2 for 5.  BA= .202.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Preston White RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.32.
Ryan Walker RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.89.

Much better results for Kai-Wei Teng in his second Giants organizational start.
