Game Wrap 7/26/2022: D'Backs 7 Giants 3

Carlos Rodon LHP allowed just 5 baserunners while striking out 10 over 6 IP......except 2 of those baserunners were home-run trotters and all 5 of those runners scored.

Wilmer Flores 2B hit his 14'th HR to drive in 2 runs.  Luis Gonzalez RF and Brandon Belt 1B had two hits each. That's about it for this game.

With the loss, the Giants clinched a loss of the 3-game series against a team with a worse record.....at least for now.  Logan Webb RHP tries to salvage a win in the series finale tomorrow afternoon facing Zac Gallen RHP.

Churn Watch:

Tommy La Stella IF was reinstated from the COVID-19 IL.  In corresponding moves, Gregory Santos RHP was optioned back to AAA Sacramento and Angel Rondon RHP was DFA'd off the 40 man roster.  You remember Rondon, right?  He was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on July 13.

  1. After Rodon's tantrum last night, he needs to be traded ASAP!!

    1. The tantrum should not have happened and it endangered a teammate bringing back memories of Hunter Strickland but that's not what should get him traded. He needs to be traded for a good prospect or two before he opts out of the second year of his contract and the Giants lose him to free agency, because they are not going anywhere this season.

    2. Yeah, yesterday was a bad tantrum that he immediately owned up to. That said, he's the only trade chip we have had in years worthy of a top prospect. If someone is offering a top 100 prospect he should be gone before his next start (I know the team is waiting for a run, and even without one we are close enough to the WC that we probably don't sale)

    3. Per Baggarly (theAthletic) he did apologize: Giants’ Carlos Rodón apologizes for bat-kicking tantrum: ‘I just feel stupid’!

    4. Not to cut Rodon any slack - even he says it was "wrong, unacceptable, and stupid" - he knows the outcome of that game is on him and he expects more of himself.
Maybe a few more "Giants" should be mad at themselves because to many they mostly seem to be going through the motions.
In actuality, last year's over-achievement gave us all much to high expectations for this year which, considering that the players are mostly the same (Posey retirement is a biggie but it doesn't make a 27-win difference - assuming now that they may only win 80 games this year) and nearly every player had a career or near-career offensive stat last year and now they all are a year older: they weren't going to repeat those performances.
Plus, they seem to have forgotten how to play defense.
And, except for Webb, how to pitch.
It could be 2020's 29-31 W/L all over again, or maybe, 80-82 will be an over-achievement, too.
2021 was a special year, at least for 109 wins, it just needed to be Special for 9 more.

  2. As you know I've been a Giants fan for years here in Hawaii. Can't follow the team as closely as I like, which is a big reason your blog is appreciated! I know they miss Posey's leadership as well as being a future hall of fame catcher. I'm wondering how much the miss Ron Wotus's experience on the coaching staff . He must have played a big role helping Kap and his young coaching staff settle in and he stuck me as an old school coach that would make sure the players got their work in hitting and especially fielding wise
