Down on the Farm: 7/8/2022

AAA:  Sacremento River Cats calmed the Salt Lake City Bees 5-3.

Luis Gonzalez RF- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .305.
Isan Diaz 3B- 1 for 4, HR(16).  BA= .267.
Emmanuel De Jesus LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 6.1.  ERA= 4.38.

Isan Diaz slashed .282/.381/.594 in June and is .310/.394/.581 so far in July.  Luis Gonzalez appears to be ready to come off the IL anytime.

AA:  Reading Fightin' Phils outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2(10 innings).

Brandon Martorano C- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .218.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.19.

A post-Futures Game promotion to AAA for Harrison with an eye on a September callup would seem to be a reasonable pathway for the young pitching prospect.  That would be essentially a repeat of the Bumgarner timeline.

Vaun Brown RF- 2 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .364.

  1. The Giants have some HR hitters in the minor leagues:
Including ties, Villar still leads the PCL, Roby leads the EL, Schmitt leads the NWL, and Brown was among the leaders in the Cal-L but had far fewer Games/ABs.
Brown's debut in the EL is near breathtaking — in a SSS, for batters with his 44 or more ABs, he leads in AVE, OBP, SLG, and OPS! He also did almost the same thing in the Cal-L if the minimum AB is set at his number, he has 3 1sts and a 2nd in OBP.
As Doc has pointed out, Brown is old at his level(s) due to 5 years in Div2 college ball abetted by Covid. Nonetheless, what he is doing is exhilarating, and it is possible, however improbable, he is for real. Most likely, there is a pitch/location he doesn't handle well but the pitchers at his level can't repeat it.

    1. If Brown keeps it up the remainder of the July, I would be in favor of an August promotion to AA along with Casey Schmitt to give both exposure to AA pitching before next season.

  2. Is there something in Luis Gonzalez's first 50 MLB games, which has been positive, that makes him look like he can hit enough to be a regular? His power numbers say CF rather than corner. Is he the future CFer? Or Ramos? Bishop? Matos? McCray?
Yastrzemski and Slater have played the bulk CF but will they be adequate in 2-3 years? YtY is 32 next month, Slater is 30 next year - both are career .250 hitters and have had better seasons in the past.

    1. IDK, when his BA is .302 and the next two highest in the starting lineup are .272 and .259, I for one don't really care what his peripheral stats are. He needs to be in the lineup until he proves he can't sustain it.
