Second Quality Start in a row for Perdomo.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels shut out the Chesapeake Baysox 2-0.

Since a disaster start on July 8 when his ERA peaked at 5.74, Marte has gone 2-2, 2.18, 33 IP, 12 BB, 36 K.  Not sure exactly where but he'll be somewhere on my Giants Top 50 Prospects this winter.

Game Wrap 8/20/2026: Guardians 5 Giants 2

Willy Adames 2-run homer was not enough to overcome defensive miscues and bad BABIP juju for Landen Roupp low-energy day game loss.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 3, 2 BB, R.  BA= .244.  Devers singled to start the 4'th inning and Adames followed with a HR.  That was it for the Giants lineup output.  They managed just 3 other hits in the game.

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(20), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .229.  Adames still has a shot at another 30 HR season but continues to struggle on defense.  For the second game in a row he had what looked like a routine groundout hit off the heel of his glove and pop straight up in the air.  This one came in the first inning with Roupp already reeling from some seriously bad BABIP luck and led to critical third run by the Guardians in the inning.

Later in the game, a dropped ball in a rundown by Osleivis Basabe 2B, who has also had a case of The Bobbles, led to a second unearned run.

Landen Roupp RHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K's, 7/4 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.34.  Roupp's first inning went Walk, GB single, bloop fly single, SF, Fielder's Choice error(Adames), pop out, line drive single, K.  Based on probabilities, he should have gotten out of the inning with no more than 1 run scored.

The Giants move on to Boston for a weekend series against the Red Sox with Logan Webb RHP starting tomorrow evening against Sonny Gray RHP who comes in with a ERA of 2.65.

Down on the Farm: 8/19/2026

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats outscored the Tacoma Rainiers 9-6.

Nate Furman 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .289.
Scott Bandura CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(8).  BA= .307.
Anthony Molina RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Alex Carrillo RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 13.50.

The Giants lineup already leans fairly heavily left.  The top two OF prospects at the AAA level, Scott Bandura and Bo Davidson both bat left.  Anthony Molina came over from the Braves in the Tyler Mahle trade.  He is on the 40-man roster so could get some looks at the MLB level this season.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Chesapeake Baysox 7-4.

Gavin Kilen SS- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .333.
Sabin Ceballos DH- 2 for 3, 2 HR(15), 2 BB.  BA= .223.
Trystan Vrieling RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.26.
Tyler Vogel RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.27.

The Giants have so many exciting stories in the minors this season Gavin Kilen's really solid season tends to get overlooked.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds topped the Vancouver Canadians 6-4.

Zander Darby 2B- 1 for 3, BB, SB(8).  BA= .278.
Damian Bravo RF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .143
Robert Hipwell 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .182.
Ramon Marquez RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, 7/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 5.40.
Marty Gair RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.08.

Ramon Marquez came over from the Phillies in the Luis Arraez trade. This was his second start since the trade.  His overall milb ERA across 3 teams is 2.22.

A:  San Jose Giants crushed the Lake Elsinore Storm 11-1.

Josuar Gonzalez SS- 3 for 6, 3B.  BA= .356.
Lorenzo Meola 2B- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(13).  BA= .263.
Junior Barajas C- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(13), 2 BB.  BA= .262.
Tanner Mally RF- 3 for 5.  BA= .415.
Angel Guzman DH- 2 for 5, 3B, HR(3).  BA= .247.
Broedy Poppell LF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .230.
Argenis Cayama RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K's, 5/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.18.
Evan Gray RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.14.
Hayden Wynja LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.08.

Of course we are all over the moon about Josuar Gonzalez but don't sleep on Argenis Cayama's dominant 5 innings here.

DSL:  Regular season is over and Giants Orange did not make the postseason.  Giants Black starts pool play today.

Game Wrap 8/19/2026: Giants 1 Guardians 0

Excellent team pitching and a hustling double by Rafael Devers led to a narrow win for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .244.  I've been as critical of Devers as anyone this season but credit where it's due.  Ever since the finger-wagging incident, he cleaned up his game, mostly hustled and actually looked like he's having fun out there.  His 4'th inning double was a deep liner to CF but one that looked like a long single but Devers busted it out of the box and when it briefly got away from the fielder, he stretched it into a double and scored the Giants only run on a single by Victor Bericoto LF.

Willy Adames SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .229.  Adames was back in the lineup for the first time in week.  He looked much better at the plate but had a ball kick off his glove straight up in the air for his 17'th error which put runners on first and second with 2 outs in the 7'th inning.  As a fan watching, you couldn't help but think "uh-oh, here we go", but Adrian Houser got the final out of the inning on a pop up to preserve the shutout.

Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  The Giants braintrust decided to make Wilkinson's MLB debut a lefty opener assignment with Adrian Houser doing the bulk-innings.  Hey!  It worked!  Wilkinson's FB topped out at 91 MPH but he delivers it at a similar angle as another lefty named Kyle Harrison and induced 2 flyouts and 3 pop ups against a single ground out in 2 innings of work.

Adrian Houser RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.08.  Since moving to the bullpen on June 26, Houser has the second best ERA in MLB(40 IP min.).  He did make one start on August 12 and pitched 6 shutout innings, but the Giants have brought him in after on Opener several times with success.  This one made sense because of the 7 batters Wilkinson faced, 4 batted left and 3 were switch-hitters.  The first batter Houser faced batted R.  So, Houser seems to have put himself in position to be either a SP or bulk-innings man next season. Either way, he fills 1/5 of a pitching rotation.

Dylan Smith RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, Save(3).  ERA= 2.73.  Smith entered the game in the 8'th inning after Houser allowed a leadoff walk to Steven Kwan and promptly threw a wild pitch, but then struck out the side with a riding 96 MPH FB that Guardians batters swung under and an occasional split or sweeper.  Dave Flemming mentioned that the FB velocity dipped by a tick or two to the last two batters of the 9'th but Smith struck both of them out for a very nice 2-out Save.  Is he now the presumptive Closer for next season?

Landen Roupp tries to get his season back on track in a day start today facing Gavin Williams RHP who comes in with a 3.74 ERA.  And I'll just say the Giants don't need an ace starter for next season, but they do need at least two pitchers like Gavin Williams.

Down on the Farm: 8/18/2026

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 9-5.

Marcello Mayer 2B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .353.
Bo Davidson LF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .295.
Shay Whitcomb SS- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .276.
Will Brennan 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(5), 2 BB.  BA= .313.
Nate Furman DH- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .289.
Adrian Sugastey C- 3 for 5.  BA= .311.
Ryan Walker RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.73.
Braxton Roxby RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.42.
Eric Cerantola RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.59.

If Bo Davidson is as advertised and what he appears to be, he should be finishing his development in a Giants uniform no later than early next season.

AA:  Chesapeake Baysox downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-2.

Trevor Cohen CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(13).  BA= .303.
Charlie Szykowny 1B- 1 for 3, HR(13), BB.  BA= .251.
Jack Choate LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.27.

A+:  Vancouver Canadians doubled up the Eugene Emeralds 10-5.

Cam Maldonado RF- 2 for 4, HR(4), BB, SB(2).  BA= .281.
Liam Simon RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.63.

Cam Maldonado is doing about the same in A+ as he was with the A SJ Giants.

A:  San Jose Giants quieted the Lake Elsinore Storm 9-2.

Josuar Gonzalez SS- 2 for 5, SB(4).  BA= .343.
Jeremiah Jenkins 1B- 1 for 5, HR(16).  BA= .243.
Tanner Mally RF- 1 for 3, HBP, SB(2).  BA= .389.
Andy Polanco CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.
Broedy Poppell LF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .224.
Trey Seeley LHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.49.
Cooper McGrath RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.52.

Andy Polanco is an interesting prospect.  He is not close to being ready to play in the major leagues but there is something there with the speed and long levers if he can get a little stronger and get his arms in enough to get around on inside fastballs.  Can a player look athletic and uncoordinated at the same time?

DSL:  Blue Jays Blue beat Giants Oranges 8-5(7 innnings).

Israel Alphonse SS(17 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .321.
Jeyson Moya DH(19 yo)- 4 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .232.
Jose Trevizo RHP(18 yo)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.52.

DSL:  Giants Black outscored the Mariners 11-5.

Alexander Camacaro 2B(18 yo)- 1 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .290.
Franco Willias LF(21 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B, Sac.  BA= .406.
Keiberg Camacaro DH(19 yo)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SF.  BA= .333.

Game Wrap 8/18/2026: Guardians 8 Giants 1

Carson Whisenhunt was lit up for a huge 3-run home run by Jo Adell in the first inning and the game was basically over at that point except for the pummeling.  Key Lines:

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.  Cox is back up and continues to get on base and show range in CF.  He did get picked off and CS to negate the two hits.  Hopefully the coaches can give him some pointers on reading MLB pitchers, especially LHP's.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4, HR(14), R, RBI.  BA= .250.  Eldridge drove in the Giants only run with a home run of his own in the 2'nd inning, off a LHP to boot.  Everything about him reminds me so much of Brandon Belt, I sometimes have to double-check myself to make sure it's not Belt out there.  I already see an ability to handle inside pitches that I never saw in Belt so I am optimistic Bryce will end up as a much better hitter.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 3/5 GO/AO.  ERA= 7.03.  I don't know if he was tipping pitches but he was not fooling the Guardians batters, especially Jo Adell who torched him for 3 hits and 6 RBI's.  The first 3 batters in the Guardians lineup all reached base 3 times.  Right now The Whiz is not looking like a pitcher to count on for next season.

Trent Harris RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 7.71.  After giving up 4 runs in his first 1.2 IP, Harris combined line for his last 2 games is 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.

Reiver Sanmartin LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.45.  Sanmartin allowed the first 3 batters he faced to reach base.  He settled down after that and should have been out of the 7'th inning but Bryce Eldridge inexplicably dropped a relay throw from Osleivis Basabe that was off the ground.  Sanmartin has a nice pitch mix which looks more like a starter's mix than a relievers to my eye.

Note that all three Giants pitchers who appeared in the game finished the day with ERA's over 7.

Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson LHP brings his soft-tossing, "invisiball" for a major league tryout tonight facing Parker Messick LHP who comes in with a 2.59 ERA.  And that sure seems like a lot of quotation marks in The Tugboat's game.

Down on the Farm: 8/17/2026

Full season leagues were all idle as usual on Mondays.

DSL:  Giants Orange topped Cubs Red 4-3(8 innings).

Fernando Pena 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Yoxander Benitez 2B- 2 for 3.  BA= .283.
Jhon Leon RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.98.

DSL:  Giants Black smashed the Nationals 12-2.

Franco Willias LF- 2 for 3, BB, 2 SB(34).  BA= .398.
Joniel Hernandez SS- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .321.
Djean Macares CF- 1 for 4, BB, 2 SB(26).

The exciting news here is Joniel Hernandez hits his second HR in as many days.  He is the 17 yo shortstop prospect who came over from the Padres in the Robbie Ray trade.  I think it's is possible Hernandez ends up being the best return out of the Giants 2026 trade deadline deals.

Down on the Farm: 8/16/2026

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats outscored the Las Vegas Aviators 15-11.

Scott Bandura RF- 4 for 5, 2 2B, BB, SB(17).  BA= .309.
Shay Whitcomb DH- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .273.
Bo Davidson LF- 4 for 5, 2 2B, 2 HR(6), BB.  BA= .287.
Nate Furman 2B- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .286.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 5.  BA= .286.
Joe Whitman LHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, 4/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 5.09.

This was one of those pad the stat line games but yes, lots to be excited about with Bo DavidsonJoe Whitman appears to be back in the rotation.  BTW, did you all hear about Cardinals prospect Joshua Baez hitting 3 homers in his first MLB game after hitting 34 in AAA?  Maybe Bo Davidson is our Joshua BaezShay Whitcomb was claimed off waivers from the Astros so he's on the Giants 40-man roster.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels at Harrisburg Senators cancelled due to rain.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds defeated the Hillsboro Hops 5-3.

Jhonny Level SS- 1 for 3, BB, 2 SB(8).  BA= .300.
Cam Maldonado RF- 1 for 4, HR(3), SB(1).  BA= .241.
Daniel Rogers C- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .232.

Jhonny Level has done impressively well in an aggressive promotion to A+.  Will he start next season in AA?

A:  San Jose Giants outlasted the Fresno Grizzlies 10-9(11 innings).

Josuar Gonzalez 2B- 3 for 6, 2B, 3B, BB.  BA= .339.
Lorenzo Meola 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .262.
Fernando Gonzalez C- 1 for 3, 3 BB.  BA= .258.
Tanner Mally RF- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .394.
Andy Polanco CF- 3 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .284.
Oliver Tejada DH- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .185.

Josuar Gonzalez is another prospect to be so excited about.  He should start next season in A+ at age 19.  I can easily see him making his MLB debut by age 20. Tanner Mally is the same singles machine he was in college.

DSL was idle on Sunday.

Game Wrap 8/16/2026: Rockies 13 Giants 7

The Giants managed to keep pace in a hit fest until the 6'th inning when another bullpen collapse gave the Rockies 7 runs in next two innings and a runaway loss.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 5, 2B(30), HR(25), 2 R, 3 RBI.  BA= .246.  Devers hit one into water that was just foul in the second inning then straightened it out and found the water again 2 pitches later for a splash hit home run, the 110'th in history.  Drew Gilbert scored on the home run.  Here are some splits on Devers who has been quite consistent:

Last 7 games:  .231/.333/462, HR.
Last 15 games:  .226/.328/.453, 3 HR.
Last 30 games:  .220/.317/.431, 6 HR.
May:  .306/.356/.593, 5 HR.
June:  .214/.313/.520, 8 HR.
July:  .267/.370/.533, 7 HR.
August:  .235/.328/.471, 3 HR.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 3, 2 BB, R, RBI.  BA= .247.  Eldridge drove in the Giants first run with soft single to CF.

Drew Cavanaugh C- 2 for 5.  BA= .250.  Cavanaugh has been swinging at pitches in the zone and taking pitches out of the zone.  In other words, he makes good swing decisions.  He lost a ball in the dirt allowing a run in the pivotal 6'th inning.  The next 4 batters went walk, walk, HBP single(misplay).

Turner Hill CF- 1 for 3, BB, R, RBI.  BA= .167.  Hill gets his first MLB hit and RBI but misplayed a ball in CF to contribute to the "sloppy" play in the 6'th.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.33.  I caught the Tony Vitello Show on KNBR while driving down the 5.  He said this game was an opportunity for Tidwell to sustain and build on his success and to show he can handle a lineup stacked with lefthanded batters. Welp!   That didn't go well!  He walked 5 batters and gave up a home run to the 9'th hitter, a guy with a .180 career BA and just 1 prior home run in 149 AB.

Bullpen- 4 relievers gave up runs including 3 who gave up 2 runs each.  I think it's safe to say a full bullpen rebuild is Buster's top priority this offseason.

The Giants get a travel day before starting a series against the Guardians in Cleveland with Carson Whisenhunt LHP facing Foster Griffin LHP who comes in with a record of 13-4 and an ERA of 3.25.

Blogger's Note

Hey team!  I am taking off in the morning on a roadie up to Ukiah to visit a couple of friends.  I will be back posting Monday evening or Tuesday AM next week.  I will try to post comments entered before about 8:30 AM but comments entered after that will not get posted until after I get back.  Thanks for understanding.

Down on the Farm: 8/11/2026

AAA:  Las Vegas Aviators strafed the Sacramento River Cats 9-2.

Turner Hill RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .351.
Eric Cerantola RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.36.

AA:  Harrisburg Senators downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2.

Trevor Cohen CF- 4 for 5, 2 SB(11).  BA= .351.
Jean Carlos Sio RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .219.
Greg Farone LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.60.
Marques Johnson RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.22.

A+:  Hillsboro Hops topped the Eugene Emeralds 5-4.

Lisbel Diaz CF- 2 for 4, HR(19).  BA= .286.
Cam Maldonado RF- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .364.
Jose Ramos LF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(6).  BA= .280.
Ramon Marquez RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 9.00.
Hunter Dryden RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.75.

Ramon Marquez makes his first start for the Giants organization after coming over in the trade with the Phillies for Luis Arraez.  He allowed 4 baserunners and they all scored.  The 8/1 K/BB would tend to indicate he has electric stuff and just needs to learn how to pitch.

A:  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the San Jose Giants 7-2.

Fernando Gonzalez C- 2 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .273.

DSL:  Giants Black destroyed Mets Orange 9-1.

Franco Willias DH- 3 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 SB(31).  BA= .406.
Keiberg Camacaro 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .344.
Rainer Espinoza RF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .091.
Diego Alambarrio C- 3 for 3.  BA= .291.
Alexander Camacaro 2B- 1 for 3, BB, SB(16).  BA= .277.
Santiago Guerrero LHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.34.
Edwin Reynoso LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.25.
Moises Soto LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.50.

DSL:  Giants Orange vs Blue Jays Red cancelled due to rain.

Game Wrap 8/11/2026: Giants 4 Astros 1

Carson Whisenhunt overcame early inning command issues to limit the Astros to a run over 5.2 IP and the lineup chipped away at Astros starter Hunter Brown RHP with enough runs for a win.  Key Lines:

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 4, HR(12), R, RBI.  BA= .248.  Eldridge drove one over the L-CF wall for the Giants 3'rd run of the game and give Whiz some breathing room.

Drew Gilbert CF- 1 for 3, BB, R, RBI.  BA= .238.  Gilbert drove in the Giants first run with a single.  He then drew a walk on a very close 3-2 pitch which the Astros catcher challenged but the ball was confirmed.  He then advanced to 2B on a groundout and scored on a singled by Drew Cavanaugh.  I thought Gilbert was the one who challenged a strike and texted my friend that it was a high leverage challenge buy Gilbert but it was the Astros catcher how challenged a ball call and lost.  Still a high-leverage challenge.

Drew Cavanaugh C- 2 for 4, SB(1), R, RBI.  BA= .242.  Cavanaugh singled in the 6'th with 2 outs.  Christian Koss got both cheeks into one and hit a laser beam over the head of the LF for a double that drove in Cavanaugh from 1B with Koss advancing to 3B on a throwing error.  That was the Giants 4'th run of the game.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.11.  Whisenhunt loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and no outs in the second.  I think he threw over 50 pitches in the two innings but allowed just 1 run.  After that he settled down and was excellent over the next 2.2 IP.  Hopefully a learning/growing experience.

Carson Seymour RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.36.  Per Kruk, Seymour missed badly with his slider to the first couple of batters he faced with Kruk saying, "no bueno."  He settled down to pitch a couple of very needed scoreless innings.

The Giants try for a series win tomorrow afternoon with TBD facing Bryan King LHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.83.  It looks like this is his first start so he might be an Opener.

Game Wrap 8/10/2026: Astros 6 Giants 3(10 innings)

The Giants were one strike away from winning this one.  The crowd was on it's feet cheering. If you closed your eyes you might have even thought it was a playoff game.  The fans were definitely doing their part.  Then a wild pitch advanced a runner to second base.  Then a groundball ticked off the glove of Osleivis Basabe 2B and into right field and that runner on second base came around to score.  Tie game, extra innings.  We all knew how that was going to turn out.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 5, HR(9).  BA= .300.  The reason why the Giants were one strike away from a win is because Jung Hoo Lee homered down the RF line coming this close to a splash hit.

Drew Gilbert CF- 1 for 3, HR(5), SF.  BA= .237.  The other reason why the Giants were one strike away from a win is because Drew Gilbert drove in the Giants first 2 runs and the home run was no cheapie.  It went into the arcade in R-CF, probably the hardest place in the ballpark to hit one.  He's hitting just .211 over his last 7 games but .297 over his last 15.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.78.  Tidwell found another tick on the fastball and paired that up with a sweeper that brought back memories of Sergio RomoTidwell looks like a keeper for next season.

The Giants try to square the series tomorrow evening with TBD facing Hunter Brown RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.53.

Remember the foul ball Daniel Susac took off his left knee and how much pain he appeared to be in?  Remember how he stayed in the game and even got back in the squaaat behind home plate?  It was a fractured patella!  Owwweeeee!!!  Yikes!  The Giants are running out of catchers to call up but Zach Morgan got the call for now.

DSL:  Cubs Red shut out Giants Orange 3-0.

Abraham Utrera RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.45.

DSL:  Giants Black edged out Arizona Red 2-1.

Djean Macares CF- 2 for 3, SF, SB(23).  BA= .287.
Diego Alambarrio C- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .271.
Randry De Leon RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.28.
Brayan Cabello RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.34.

Randry De Leon once seemed like a promising prospect with great size at 6' 4", 200 lbs but he's kicked around the DSL for 4 seasons now.  He got off to a terrible start this season but over his last 6 Starts he has a 2.92 ERA.

Down on the Farm: 8/9/2026

Trevor Cohen CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .326.

Maui Ahuna 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .225.

A:  Stockton Ports beat the San Jose Giants by a touchdown, 14-7.

Broedy Poppell RF- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .226.
Hayden Wynja LHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.69.

Josuar Gonzalez is batting .400 in August so far raising his BA from .294 to .357.

DSL:  Idle as usual on Sundays.

Game Wrap 8/9/2026: Tigers 3 Giants 1(10 innings)

The Giants failed to convert several scoring opportunities and the bullpen couldn't deal with inherited runners in the extra-innings as they followed a now-familiar formula to another loss.  Key Lines:

Drew Gilbert CF- 2 for 4, 3B, RBI.  BA= .240.  Gilbert's 2-out triple in the second inning was the Giants only base-hit.  He was stranded at 3B.  The Giants had a first and third, no outs situation in the 4'th inning and came up empty.  Later they had a bases-loaded, 1-out situation in the 8'th and didn't score.  Gilbert drove in the only run with a single in the 7'th inning.

Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, 12/2 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.59.  Webb was masterful pitching to groundball contact and preserving his pitch count getting through 8 innings on 100 pitches.  Dylan Smith RHP struck out the side in the 9'th inning but then Sam Hentges LHP allowed the inherited runner to score and on an inside-out single to RF by a RH-hitting PH and then allowed in an insurance run to score off the bats of LH batters.

Blade Tidwell RHP tries to start the next series against the Astros with a win this evening facing Hayden Wesneski RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.86.

Down on the Farm: 8/8/2026

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats derailed the Round Rock Express 9-2.

Jonah Cox CF- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(1).  BA= .500.
Turner Hill DH- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .347.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .429.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.
Anthony Molina RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Not much more to say about Jonah Cox.  Ridiculous numbers all season.  Turner Hill too.  As long was we're in audition mode, why not them?  Maybe even Diego Velasquez at 2B too?  Anthony Molina, who came over in the much-maligned Tyler Mahle trade with the Braves has a successful Giants organizational debut.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Reading Fightin' Phils 6-2.

Trevor Cohen DH- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .322.
Maui Ahuna 2B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .221.
Jose Astudillo LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .444.
Ty Hanchey C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .262.
Tyler Switalski LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 8.31.
Marques Johnson RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.19.
Ryan Vanderhei RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.05.

A+:  Spokane Indians topped the Eugene Emeralds 7-6.

Jhonny Level SS- 1 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .296.
Zander Darby 2B- 2 for 4, HR(15).  BA= .274.
Lisbel Diaz CF- 1 for 4, HR(18).  BA= .283.
Jose Ramos LF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(5).  BA= .277.

Level's HR was with 2 runners on base.  Lisbel Diaz has 3 HR's in his last 4 games and 11 since July 1.

A:  San Jose Giants beat the Stockton Ports 10-4.

Josuar Gonzalez SS- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .324.
Lorenzo Meola 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(12), BB.  BA= .263.
Jeremiah Jenkins 1B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .242.
Fernando Gonzalez C- 2 for 3, BB, HBP.  BA= .262.
Tanner Mally RF- 3 for 4, BB, SB(1).  BA= .556.
Angel Guzman DH- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .228.
Fernando Vasquez RHP- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
R. J. Dabovich RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Dylan Carter RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.79.

An R. J. Dabovich sighting!

DSL:  Arizona Black beat Giants Orange 6-1(7 innings).

Nothing to see here.

DSL:  Met's Blue blanked Giants Black 5-0(7 innings).

Giants were no-hit.

Game Wrap 8/8/2026: Tigers 8 Giants 0

This game was competitive, at least on the pitching side, until the 7'th inning when a pair of auditioning relievers, Trent Harris RHP and Reiver Sanmartin LHP gave up a 6-spot.  The Giants lineup managed just 3 baserunners in the entire game.  Key Lines:

Landen Roupp RHP- 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.22.  3 of the 5 walks came in the 6'th and the run came in when reliever Keaton Winn walked a 4'th batter in the inning.  Other than that, it was Roupp's best start out of this last 3.  I didn't see the game because it wasn't shown on Fox down here in SoCal but I've read there was some sort of disrespect from Roupp when Manager Tony Vitello took him out.  If so, Roupp might have had a point because he got out of a base-loaded jam in the 2'nd inning and he was only at 85 pitches, although taking him out is what most managers would do in that situation.

The 7'th inning meltdown was exacerbated by a fly ball Drew Gilbert CF lost in the Sun with his shades on his hat.

In the immortal words of Taylor Swift, the Giants will try to shake it off and win the series today with Logan Webb RHP facing Troy Melton RHP who comes in with a 1.58 ERA.

DSL:  Giants Orange crushed Blue Jays Blue 8-5.

Israel Alfonse DH(17 yo)- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .333.

Lender Bracho RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.08.

Game Wrap 8/7/2026: Giants 5 Tigers 2

Rafael Devers and Willy Adames led the lineup and Tony Vitello used an Opener for the first time and somewhere Gabe Kapler and Farhan Zaidi are out there laughing to themselves.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 1 for 3, BB, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .303.  Lee walked ahead of Devers HR in the first inning then delivered a 2-out, bases-loaded single in the second inning to account for 3 of the Giants 5 runs.

Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 4, HR(24), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .248.  Devers looks like a lock to surpass 30 HR's for the 5'th time in his career and in his first full season as a Giant despite Oracle Park suppressing left-hitting HR's more than any other ballpark.

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(19), R, RBI.  BA= .221.  Adames his on a pace to hit 26 HR's but He's generally a strong finisher so has an outside shot at 30 also.

Adrian Houser RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.55.  The matchup theory doesn't really hold water for why Vitello used an Opener as 2 of the first 3 Tigers batters hit from the right side and J. T. Brubaker is also a RHP.  Maybe it was just to maintain the feel of entering the game without the standard pregame ritual for a SP but it worked as Houser allowed just 1 run in 5 IP and recorded the win, just his third of the season.

Landen Roupp RHP tries to clinch a series win in a 4:15 PM Fox game facing Jackson Jobe RHP who makes his first start of the season and first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last season.

Mike Krukow Announces Retirement

We got sad but not unexpected news yesterday that Mike Krukow will retire from his longtime position as color commentator on the Giants TV broadcast, sadly for medical reasons which we have all known about for a long time.  Most of that time he was partnered with his former Giants teammate Duane Kuiper in what has to be one of the most, if not THE most, broadcast partnerships in baseball broadcast history.  I've always found it remarkable that these two guys started prepping for their broadcast careers by sitting together in the dugout as players and practicing calling the game their team was playing.  That hard work paid off in a broadcast routine that never got old.

Over the years we were treated to a whole vocabulary of Krukisms:  "Grab some pine, meat!", "that was a rough at bat!", "he rolls out of bed throwing hundos!", "that's a big league knock!" "he really got both cheeks into that one!" and many more.  Nobody else has those.

While they had their funny side, the thing I liked about Kruk and Kuip is how they used their time in the broadcast booth to teach the game.  Kruk didn't just offer opinions and analysis.  He explained WHY he had those opinions.  He explained the thinking of both the pitcher and batter, not just in key situations, on almost every pitch.  Watching and listening to their broadcasts was like sitting in a classroom where a class in baseball theory was taught.

Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper both deserve to be in the Hall of Fame for their broadcasts and they should go in together.  This post shows how impossible it is to talk about either of them without the other.  Mike Krukow's retirement.  We have truly reached the end of an era in the history of Giants baseball.

Game Wrap 8/5/2026: Rangers 6 Giants 0

Carson Whisenhunt looked like he was settling into a groove until the lineup turned over, then the wheels came off.  Meanwhile the lineup generated a couple of firsts but otherwise failed to mount a serious threat in a glaring talent mismatch.  Key Lines:

Eddys Leonard LF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .200.  Leonard's first MLB hit was not a cheapie as he roped a line drive over the head of the Rangers leftfielder and off the wall for an easy double which he ran out with with a huge smile on his face the whole way.

Drew Cavanaugh C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.  Cavanaugh's 14'th hit of his MLB career went for XBH after 13 singles.  He is batting .294 over his last 7 games and .313 over his last 15.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.25.  Whiz looked great through 2.1 IP as he was hitting the corners at the knees with his FB and getting swing throughs on fading changeup, also at the knees.  Then the leadoff hitter, Wyatt Langford, came up for the second time in the game and everything fell apart.  The Rangers scored 4 times in the third inning and Tony Vitello went to the bullpen when he walked the second batter in the 4'th inning.

The Giants get a day to rest up from the road trip tomorrow before starting a weekend home series agains the Tigers with TBD facing TBD.  We are likely to see a lot of TBD's and competitive mismatches over the final two months of the season.

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats topped the Round Rock Express 6-4.

Jonah Cox CF- 3 for 5, 2 SB(4).  BA= .409.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4.  BA= .323.
Thomas Gavello 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .191.
Cesar Perdomo LHP- 6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 7.77.
Wilkin Ramos RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.22.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.05.

Seems like Jonah Cox should get the chance to win the everyday CF role for the Giants at some point.  That game-changing speed needs a chance to have more of an impact than just in occasional pinch-running roles.

AA:  Reading Fightin' Phils at Richmond Flying Squirrels postponed.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds blasted the Spokane Indians 13-1.

Jhonny Level SS- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SF.  BA= .280.
Zander Darby 3B- 2 for 4, HR(14), 2 BB.  BA= .272.
Hayden Jatczak 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .306.
Walker Martin DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .231.
Zane Zielinski 2B- 2 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .308.
Jose Ramos LF- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, SF.  BA= .294.
Hunter Dryden RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.98.
Liam Simon RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.50.
Ryan Slater RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.33.

Stat padding game.

A:  San Jose Giants walked off the Stockton Ports 5-4.

Lorenzo Meola 2B- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .255.
Cam Maldonado RF- 2 for 3, HR(14), BB.  BA= .268.
Andy Polanco CF- 2 for 4, 2 SB(31).  BA= .265.
Trey Seeley RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 9.00.
Fernando Vasquez RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, 3/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 5.11.
Dylan Carter RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, 3/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 6.08.

Seeley has not been good but it seems like an 8/1 K/BB, even in just one game, is something to work with.

DSL:  Rangers Blue beat up Giants Orange 13-6(Game called in the bottom of the 7'th inning due to lightning).

Yeison Oviedo 2B- 2 for 4, SB(8).  BA= .331.
Brandon Vasquez RF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(5).  BA= .314.

DSL:  Giants Black defeated Cubs Red 6-1.

Joniel Hernandez SS- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, 2 SB(8).  BA= .323.
Vinicius Dos Santos RF- 1 for 3, HR(1), HBP, 2 SB(21).  BA= .206.
Boris Sarduy LF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .244.
Santiago Guerrero RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.48.
Hector Dos Santos LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.95.

Joniel Hernandez fills up the stat line in his first game as a Giant.  Exciting stuff!

Game Wrap 8/4/2026: Rangers 5 Giants 4

An inspiring comeback by the kids to tie the score in the top of the 9'th inning was spoiled by another bullpen failure for a disappointing walk off loss.  Key Lines:

Osleivis Basabe 2B/3B/2B- 1 for 5, HR(3), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .294.  Basabe's home run in the 7'th tied the game at 2.  Basabe will almost certainly not keep this up but it's nice to ride the hot hand and see where it goes.

Bryce Eldridge PH- 1 for 1, 2 RBI.  BA= .256.  I can't begin to describe how great an AB Eldridge had.  The Giants were facing a lefty Closer who has been lights out.  They had righty-hitting Buddy Kennedy leading off then 3 lefty-batting young batters with no RH batters left on the bench.  Kennedy struck out, but then funny things started to happen.  Drew Gilbert, who has been terrible against LHP's singled on a line drive over shorstop.  Grant McCray drew a walk.  Bryce Eldridge was brought up to pinch-hit for Nate Furman.  A passed ball advanced the runners to 2'nd and 3'rd.  Eldridge then single to RF on a 2-2 pitch and the game was tied only to have the Rangers win in a walk-off in the bottom of the 9'th.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, 5/2 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.18.  Tidwell got off to a rough start going walk, pop out, single, double, single to the first 5 batters he faced and just like that it was 2-0 Rangers.  He settled down after that and only allowed 3 singles over the next 4.2 IP.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP tries for a series win tomorrow in a 11:35 PDT start facing Cody Bradford LHP who is making his first MLB appearances since 2024.

Game Wrap 8/3/2026: Giants 5 Rangers 1

Logan Webb's shutout pitching and Jung Hoo Lee's power hitting took the Giants to a solid win at the end of trade deadline day.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 3 for 4, 2 HR(8), SF, SB(8).  BA= .306.  Lee went for contact over power all season which worked out well.  Is this the beginning of a new power surge or just an easy ballpark to hit in?

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.74.  Webb came out looking like he was pitching with some anger in the first inning and it powered him to what might be his best start of the season.

Blade Tidwell RHP enters a revamped rotation tonight facing Mackenzie Gore LHP who comes in with a ERA of 4.77.

Down on the Farm8/3/2026

DSL:  Giants Orange outscored the White Sox 8-6(8 innings).

Yoxander Benitez 2B- 2 for 3, BB, SF.  BA= .292.
Yeison Oviedo SS- 3 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .326.
Albert Jimenez 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .282.
Jose Trevizo RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.82.
Maicol Santana RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.45.

DSL:  Giants Black blasted Blue Jays Blue 10-3(7 innings).

Franco Willias LF- 3 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(29).  BA= .398.
Djean Macares CF- 3 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .296.
Alessandro Alambarrio C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .266.
Randry DeLeon RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.95.

Scouting the 2026 Trade Deadline

The Giants had one of the biggest trade deadline days in franchise history.  Certainly the biggest all-out deadline sale I can remember.  Whent the dust cleared 6 players were traded off the Active Roster for a total of 8 prospects, most of them ranked in the top 10 of organizations they come from and 5 immediately slot into the MLB's Top 30 Giants Prospects.  Here is a list of the players the Giants traded yesterday and today:

Tyler Mahle RHP

Luis Arraez 2B

Robbie Ray LHP

Caleb Kilian RHP

Erik Miller LHP

Heliot Ramos OF

Carlos Gutierrez OF(A+)

We all know who they are so I am not going to go into detail of their strengths and weaknesses.  The only (slight) surprises were Ramos and GutierrezRamos was traded for the prospect return he could get and because the Giants have several OF prospects they are hight on and need to open up positions where they can play.  Gutierrez was throw-in on a deal for a former #4 overall draft pick.

Let's grind through the prospects the Giants got in return.  I will list them in the order of where I rank them.

Ramon Marquez RHP(Phillies).  DOB:  9/19/2005.  6' 2", 182 lbs.

2026(A):  3-0, 1.86, 29 IP, 14.59 K/9, 3.10 BB/9, 1.86 GB/FB.
2026(A+):  3-1, 1.50, 30 IP, 13.80 K/9, 2.70 BB/9, 2.25 GB/FB.

MLB scouting report gives him a FB that sits 94-96 MPH and hits 98, a cutter and a 70 grade changeup that is rated one of the best in the minor leagues.  Some effort in his delivery which could bode for more of a bullpen role.

Henry LaLane LHP(Yankees).  DOB:  5/18/2004.  6' 7", 211 lbs.

2026(A):  4-1, 2.74, 62.1 IP, 11.70 K/9, 3.18 BB/9, 1.73 GB/FB.
2025(A+):  0-0, 2.87, 15.2 IP, 9.77 K/9, 2.30 BB/9, 1.06 GB/FB.

Big, tall lefty.  Son of a basketball player.  $350 K international signing bonus.  Lost a couple seasons to a shoulder injury but seems fully healthy now.  60 grade FB sits at 94 and tops out at 98.  Best secondary pitch is a 60 grade changeup.  Slider is a sweeper.  Throws consistent strikes.

Miguel Mendez RHP(Padres).  DOB:  7/1/2002.  6' 2", 165 lbs.

2026(AA):  2-2, 4.93, 34.2 IP, 9.87 K/9, 4.41 BB/9, 1.19 GB/FB.

Broke out in 2025 after 4 years in A ball.  Velocity spiked to 95-100 MPH.  Tight slider is a "dynamite" weapon.  Changeup is less developed.  Improved control but still walks too many.  Probably profiles as a RP.

Joniel Hernandez SS(Padres).  DOB:  3/6/2009.  B-R, T-R.  6' 1", 180 lbs

2026(DSL):  .303/.424/.503, 15 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 4 SB, 16.7 BB%, 16.1 K%, 192 PA.

17 yo SS out of Cuba.  $1.4 M signing bonus.  Loose, whippy swing comes with some length but currently hitting for average in the DSL and showing excellent strike zone judgment.  Projectable power in both the swing and frame.  Run is best tool with a 60 grade.  A lottery ticket, for sure.

Kaeden Kent SS(Yankees).  DOB:  8/29/2003.  B-L, T-R.  6' 2", 200 lbs.

2026(A+):  .302/.359/.433, 20 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 20 SB, 8.2 BB%, 16.1 K%.

Giants are stockpiling legacy prospects.  Kent is the son of recently inducted HOF'er Jeff.  Profiles more at 2B defensively.  Batted .417 in the 2024 College World Series.  3'rd round draft pick.  High baseball IQ, line drive swing that produces contact but limits power.

Marty Gair RHP(Phillies).  DOB:  7/17/2003.  6' 6", 230 lbs.

2026(A):  2-3, 4.91, 33 IP, 15.82 K/9, 5.73 BB/9, 6 Saves.

Big reliever with a bigger fastball that reaches 102 MPH.  Just what the doctor ordered for a velocity starved bullpen.  Can get a wild hair up his nose.

Marcelo Mayer IF(Red Sox).  DOB:  12/12/2002.  B-L, T-R.  6' 3", 188 lbs.

2025(AAA):  .271/.347/.471, 9 HR, 2 SB, 10.4 BB%, 19.7 K%, 193 PA.
2025(MLB):  .228/.272/.402, 4 HR, 5.9 BB%, 30.1 K%, 136 PA.
2026(MLB):  .220/.282/.312, 3 HR, 3 SB, 7.0 BB%, 19.3 K%, 228 PA.

Former #4 overall draft pick whose career hit a wall in the transition from prospect to MLB'er.  Sweet swing but one that produces too much ground ball contact and tends to chase off-speed pitches.  Struggles against LHP's which may limit him to platoon work.  Giants gave up a pretty good lefty reliever and threw in a lottery ticket prospect to get him, so do they see something they think they can fix?

Anthony Molina RHP(Braves).  DOB:  1/12/2002.  6' 1", 170 lbs.

2026(AAA):  3-2, 3.64, 54.1 IP, 9.28 K/9, 3.31 BB/9, 1 Save.
2026(MLB):  0-0, 5.40, 5 IP, 3.60 K/9, 1.80 BB/9.

We profiled him in Sunday's Game Wrap after the trade.  Solid velocity and a 3-pitch mix but pitches to contact.

Overall Buster Posey used the trade deadline to stockpile a bunch of high-ceiling arms which at the worst bring added velocity to a velocity-starved bullpen which is exactly what he needed to do.  He did not shed any of the potential "albatross" contracts either by choice or more likely could not find any takers despite rumored interest from the Padres in Rafael Devers.  Perhaps the offseason is more conducive to that type of trade?

Grade B+.

Down on the Farm: 8/2/2026

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats blasted the Tacoma Rainiers 9-1.

Jonah Cox CF- 3 for 5, SB(2).  BA= .353.
Scott Bandura RF- 2 for 4, BB, SB(14).  BA= .301.
Will Brennan 1B- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .336.
Eddys Leonard 2B- 1 for 5, HR(4).  BA= .143.
Matt Wilkinson LHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.41.
Tristan Beck RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.63.

Nice turnaround for Wilkinson after a disaster start.  This was his best start of the season at any level.  His only other 7-inning, scoreless start was May 27 in AA with 3 K's and 0 BB's.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-1.

Trevor Cohen CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .348.
Gavin Kilen SS- 3 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .327.
Charlie Szykowny RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .247.
Maui Ahuna 3B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .220.
Logan Martin RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.21.
Shane Rademacher RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.30.

7 multi-hit games in a row for Cohen.  He and Kilen look like a nice haul from the 2025 draft.

A+:  Tri-Cities Dust Devils beat the Eugene Emeralds 6-3.

Jose Astudillo RF- 3 for 5.  BA= .396.
Hayden Jatczak DH- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .290.
Zander Darby 3B- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(13).  BA= .269.
Carlos De La Torre LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.16.
Esmerlin Vinicio LHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.14.

A:  San Jose Giants doubled up the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 8-4.

Luis Hernandez SS- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .125.
Cam Maldonado RF- 2 for 2, 2B, HR(13), 2 BB, SB(17).  BA= .264.
Chen-Hsun Lee RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

DSL was idle as usual on Sundays.

Game Wrap 8/2/2026: Padres 5 Giants 4

Home runs by Osleivis Basabe and Rafael Devers were not enough to overcome a subpar start by Landen Roupp as the Giants dropped the final 3 games of the 4-game series against the Padres.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 3, HR(23), BB, 2 R, RBI.  BA= .250.  Although I acknowledge Devers as the best hitter on the team, is he THE player you lash your franchise to in the raging sea?  My answer is no and that contract is only going to get worse going forward and there is LONG way to go!  So when I read on MLBTR that the Padres are interested I am praying it's true.  I value the future payroll flexibility much more than his current value which is less than his current salary anyway.

Osleivis Basabe 3B- 1 for 3, HR(2), HBP, R, RBI.  BA= .333.  His history suggests he won't sustain anything close to this but it's fun to ride the hot hand.

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP, SB(7).  BA= .301.  Is it just me or are there too many times when players on this team put up a multi-hit line including XBH's and yet do not figure in the scoring?

Landen Roupp RHP- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 6 K's, 5/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.34.  Roupp may have reached his wall as he approaches 120% of his career innings max.

Logan Webb RHP takes the mound this evening against the Rangers and TBD.

The first shoe dropped as the trade deadline approaches with Tyler Mahle going to the Braves for Anthony Molina RHP.  Molina is 24 yo, throws a FB 96-97 MPH and has 4 pitches he throws at least 16% of the time.

Anthony Molina RHP.  DOB:  1/12/2002.  6' 1", 170 lbs.

AAA:  3-2, 3.78, 52.1 IP, 9.11 K/9, 3.44 BB/9, 1 Save, 9 GS.
MLB:  0-0, 5.40, 5 IP, 3.60 K/9, 1.80 BB/9.
MLB(Career):  2-2, 6.89, 99.1 IP, 6.07 K/9, 2.63 BB/9.

Swingman in the minors.  Has a pitch mix that could work as a SP.  Giants probably see him as more of a reliever.  Trade target was probably the velocity which is at least the right idea for rebuilding the bullpen. Despite the velocity and the pitch mix the strikeout rates come up short.

Down on the Farm: 8/1/2026

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats conquered the Tacoma Rainiers 7-2.

Turner Hill RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .345.
Parks Harber 3B- 2 for 4, 2 HR(4), BB.  BA= .377.
Thomas Gavello 2B- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .192.
Seth Lonsway LHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.62.
Ryan Walker RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.00.
Michael Fulmer RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.98.

With Matt Chapman's rehab setback, do the Giants give Parks Harber a shot at 3B?

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Somerset Patriots 10-4.

Trevor Cohen DH- 2 for 6, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .344.
Dayson Croes 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .261.
Charlie Szykowny RF- 2 for 4, BB, 2 SB(8).  BA= .244.
Jack Payton LF- 2 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA- .272.
Will Bednar RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.67.

6'th consecutive multi-hit game for Trevor Cohen.  I think he must have heard us talking about the lack of power.

A+:  Tri-Cities Dust Devils outscored the Eugene Emeralds 9-6.

Carlos Gutierrez DH- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(26).  BA= .276.
Hayden Jatczak 1B- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .296.
Ubert Mejias RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, 4/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 6.56.

A:  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes topped the San Jose Giants 9-6.

Josuar Gonzalez SS- 1 for 3, SF, SB(2).  BA= .300.
Junior Barajas C- 1 for 3, HR(11), BB.  BA= .251.
Andy Polanco CF- 3 for 4, 2 3B(9), SB(29).  BA= .262.

DSL:  Giants Black edged out Giants Orange 7-6.

Brandon Vasquez RF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .310.
Keiberg Camacaro DH- 2 for 3, BB, SB(25).  BA= .357.
Jesus Lopez RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 5.29.
Delvis Heredia RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.49.

Game Wrap 8/1/2026: Padres 6 Giants 5

The lineup got a boost from newcomer Osleivis Basabe but it was not enough to overcome a less than Quality Start by potential trade target Tyler Mahle and another bullpen failure.  Key Lines:

Osleivis Basabe 2B/3B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1), R, 4 RBI.  Basabe last played in a MLB game in 2023 with the Rays.  Prior to tonight's game he batted .268/.344/.388 with 5 HR and 12 SB in 311 AAA PA's.  Hey!  It's always a good thing to catch lightning in a bottle.  Too bad it wasn't enough to get a win in this game.

The Giants had 4 other batters with 2 hits each.  Those 8 hits produced just 2 Runs and 0 RBI's.  12 hits plus 4 BB's should produce more than 5 runs.  Lack of power and poor sequencing(random chance?) suppress run production.

Tyler Mahle RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 5.13.  Did Mahle hurt his chances of being traded?  At first glance yes, but the K/BB and mid-90's velocity may have helped his....or the Giants cause.  He also came within one out of getting through 6 innings.

Dylan Smith RHP- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.89.  Smith has been really good but not tonight as the Padres walked him off in the 9'th inning.

Landen Roupp RHP tries to salvage a split of the 4-game series today facing Michael King RHP who comes in with a 3.38 ERA.

The Giants are a hot mess off the field.  The Apple TV broadcast on Friday implied, or maybe came right out and said, that Willy Adames SS was less than enthusiastic about working with Ron Washington on his defense prompting a defense from Manager Tony Vitello.  Apparently Adames has been playing with a bad back which limits his abilty to play the position in an the exaggerated crouch that Washington favors.  IDK.  If the back is what caused Adames defense to crater, maybe he should take some time off to try to get it into some semblance of playing shape?

Matt Chapman 3B's return from the IL is delayed due to continued abdominal muscle pain which limits him when trying to run the bases.  I suspect this may require surgery in the offseason.  Meanwhile, does this open an opportunity for Parks Harber 3B/OF to audition at 3B?

Harrison Bader OF has a 2-year contract but has probably played his last game as a Giant.  The Giants took the step of suspending payments on his contract while investigating the circumstances of a scooter injury which it turns out happened at 2 AM outside a bar and Bader crashed into the back of a fire truck.

Game Wrap 7/31/2026: Padres 7 Giants 0

The Padres rolled out a weird bullpen/opener pitching configuration in which their apparent starting pitcher entered the game in the 5'th inning.  I'm not sure why these schemes seem to work for other teams and not the Giants but their lineup was shut down, as it two hits all game, one from the leadoff batter and one from the 9'th batter.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP had poor command of a below average fastball and got smacked around by a Padres lineup that can still do some damage.  Adrian Houser allowed just 1 run in 4.2 innings of relief and seems ready to move back into the rotation depending on how the trade deadline plays out.

Not much more to say about this one, folks! At least I didn't waste an evening watching it because it was streamed on Apple TV.

Tyler Mahle RHP is the listed starter for this evening's game facing Walker Buehler RHP who comes in with an ERA of 5.13.

Oh, and I completed 70 revolutions around the Sun today.  Hope to have a few more.
