Down on the Farm: 7/4/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Sacramento River Cats 6-5 in 10 innings:

Mike Fontenot(2B)- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA= .211.
Edgar Gonzalez(SS-3B)- 3 for 5, HR(5). BA= .307.

I smell a callup coming for Fonty any day now.

AA Richmond vs Trenton suspended in the bottom of the 2'nd inning with Trenton leading 1-0.

High A Modesto Nuts crushed the San Jose Giants 12-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .321.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .389.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(8). BA= .265.
Michael Main(RHP)- 1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.15.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Brown stays hot. Main has a tough start. 20 yo Dunnington get the callup from Augusta and has a successful debut for SJ!

Low A Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Charleston River Dogs 5-2:

Josh Mazzola(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(7). BA= .221.
Joel Weeks(C)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .317.
Gaspar Santiago(LHP)- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.14.

Mazzola and Weeks are basically organizational players. Don't know much about Santiago. He's got decent K numbers but his BB/9 is way too high.

Short Season: Everett Aquasox beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-1:

Shawn Payne(CF)- 2 for 4. BA= .255.
Joe Panik(SS)- 4 for 4, 2B, SB(2). BA= .349.
Reiner Roibal(RHP)- 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.84.

Panik seems to be too good for this level. Roibal gave up some hits, but his K and BB numbers were more in line with the 1 ER allowed.

Rookie AZL Giants outlasted the Padres 11-10:

Ben Thomas(1B)- 2 for 6, 2B, BB. BA= .381.
Jose Cuevas(3B)- 2 for 6, HR(2), S. BA= .167.
Mike Merganthaler(LF)- 2 for 6, HBP, SB(1). BA= .208.
Jose De La Cruz(DH)- 2 for 6, 2B. BA= .389.
Paul Davis(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.84.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Addison Proszek(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.48.
Brian Maloney(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Ben Thomas seems to be too good for this level. Not sure why we don't see more of De La Cruz. Injuries? Brutal in the field? Good to see the kid Blackburn getting out there and pitching right after signing.

DSL The entire DSL was postponed.

  1. I agree about Panik. Where do you think he belongs? I'm thinking throw him to San Jose and see how he does. Gary Brown did well there from the start, perhaps Panik, who also led his college league in a variety of batting categories, like Brown, can thrive there as well.

  2. Doc,

Do you have a report on Eric Valdez? Is he on a par with RafRod, De La Cruz, Peguero, etc? Have he signed any other Latin Bonus Babies this year that we may have missed?

  3. For what its worth, the Cardinals started Kolten Wong in the Midwest League, and he's doing ok .260 BA and .368 OBP, but its early. I'm just glad that Panik signed early and is playing somewhere. I'm glad Fontenot is coming back. The FO may need to address the middle infield at the trade deadline. Should they go with Fontenot/Buriss at 2nd base? If not, then Orlando Hudson would be a good pickup. Should they go with Crawford/Tejada at SS? Fontenot can play SS on occasion.

  4. Anon,

I don't think they will go with a Teh Nada / Crawford tandem at SS. I think it will be Crawford. He is putting up GREAT ABs, even if he is not getting great results. He is cause the pitchers to work, and getting the rest of the hitters lots of views. On top of that, he is providing near GG D at SS. He is the starting SS for this team for the foreseeable future.

O-Dogg is not a horrible option, but someone (I don't remember if it was here or on another site) said that the Pads would likely be hesitant to help us out. I live in SD, and the Giants are considered the Pads #2 rival (behind the Doggies), so the Gs would likely have to offer a clearly superior deal to beat out any competitors for him.

  6. No info on Eric Valdez. Sounds like a good investment of $325 K though. I'd rather see the Giants sign several of these low-mid 6 figure guys than 1 7 figure guy. Then trust that the scouting staff is doing it's job down there.
