AAA Fresno Grizzlies mounted a 9'th inning rally against the Tacoma Rainiers but came up a run short, 7-6:

Max Ramirez(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(5). BA= .255.
Interesting that Pill started the game at 3B with Gillaspie at 1B. THAT is not out of necessity! Clearly they are trying to increase Pill's value by increasing the number of positions he plays. Max Ramirez has played 10 games with the Grizzlies and is hitting .343/.378/.714. Now, if they can just find a position for him to play....
AA Reading Phillies edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:
Francisco Peguero(CF)- 2 for 4, HR(2). BA= .350.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 1 for 3, 2B, HBP. BA= .257.
High A Stockton Ports beat the San Jose Grizzlies 5-3:
Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B, SB(34). BA= .320.
Brandon Belt(1B)- 1 for 2, BB. BA= .500.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 3, 3B, HBP. BA= .357.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 1 for 3, SF. BA= .242.

That's more like it from Brownie. Wheels has the K's going but still has the control issue to work on.
Low A Savannah Sand Gnats dominated the Augusta Greenjackets for the second straight game, this time 7-1:

Justin Schumer(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.43.
Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 6.29.
The Sand Gnats scored all 7 of their runs off Schumer in the first 2 innings. The 'Jackets made a total of 4 errors in the game.
Short Season Everett Aquasox downed the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 8-7:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .235.

Would that be your opinion that is what happened to Gary Brown? He was doing so well, then stopped doing well. He did have a high BABIP, so some regression probably happens but do you think other teams have found something they could exploit?
He being slight in stature could mean that there is a stamina problem, potentially, so it could be that as well."
Nice to see him has a nice game, though, and with some power, that has to be a good sign. I guess it could also have been a matter of adjustments, the other teams finally figured out how to get him out, so now he had to adjust back.

ReplyDeleteI'm kind of a homebody and its way too hot to do anything outdoors here in SoCal so don't have anything else to do.
Several possibilities on Brown: Maybe the league figured out something on him? Maybe stamina issues? Playing CF every day and stealing all those bases has to take a toll in your first full pro season. One thing I noticed is he seemed to go cold right about the time Peguero arrived on the scene and he seems to be coming out of it after Peguero left. I wonder if he sensed they are competing for similar future roles in the organization and put some pressure on himself?

Not sure what's going to happen when Belt comes back, or when he will be back for that matter. The Giants official line is that he's going to need some time in AAA to get his timing and stroke back. Might not see him until Sept.
ReplyDeleteI'm becoming more and more convinced that several veteran players need to be moving on in the upcoming offseason and the Giants need to open up the floodgates for the kids. Belt, Neal, Hector Sanchez, Pill, Peguero, Brown. I just hope the Giants don't block them with 2-3 year deals on vets. Bring on the kids and sign those pitchers to longer term contracts.

ReplyDeleteNice blog. I liked your prospect list. I had to get all the way down to #25 before I had any serious disagreement so that's pretty good. I might have taken a flyer on a Leonardo Fuentes over an older guy like Graham, although I do think Graham is underrated and could help a team as a 4'th or 5'th OF. Did you include Jarrett Parker? I don't remember, but if not, I would definitely put him in over Graham.

OK, I see you have Parker at #15. Yeah, I might go with Fuentes at #25 because of his massive upside.

ReplyDeleteThe Giants have been pretty good about creating openings for prospects, while hedging their bets in case the youngster failed. When someone is potentially ready to start (Frandsen, Lewis, Sandoval, Ishikawa, Belt), they essentially leave a spot open for the guy to win, usually with a vet backup who could take over if necessary.
ReplyDeleteI think that is part of the calculus into why the Giants have not pursued anything long term with Cody Ross. They probably want to see where their OF prospects are by the end of the season, before committing to him.
I can see the Giants trading Rowand and $10-11M to another team to clear space for OF, much like when they got rid of Livan to the Expos. Torres and Schierholtz should still have a spot, and Burrell probably as well, if he's available again at $1M. That would leave two spots, one for Belt to battle for, one for Neal and others to battle for. It is a bit risky, but should the young guys fail to win a spot, Ishikawa could take one spot on the bench, being able to play 1B and LF, plus being good homerun power LH bat off bench.
I think Tejada is obviously gone, but that the Giants will pick up a Uribe type to give Crawford the chance to win SS.
I think Stewart and Hanchez will fight it out for backup catcher, but probably Stewart wins and Hanchez get to start in AAA.
