Game Wrap 7/26/2011: Phillies 7 Giants 2
It's never a good sign when you are expecting Tim Lincecum to start the Giants game for the day, but when you open mlb.com to check the score, you find a picture of Barry Zito pitching. That's all I'm going to say about this game as I really don't feel like writing about it and it seems like a game best forgotten as quickly as possible. Hopefully Timmy is feeling enough better from his stomach virus to start tomorrow.

I really wonder if Surkamp couldn't put together better innings at the big league level than Barry Zito right now. For a long time he would put 2 or 3 decent starts together to make you hopeful, but he is getting beat around too much to keep out there.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to say Bochy threw in the towel early, but his reactions and mannerisms sure seemed to scream out that Zito would be taking one for the team, saving the bullpen.
What's with Rowand turning on fastballs in garbage time lately?
ReplyDeleteI'm not understanding why Belt is not starting right now, if for nothing else, than for the Giants' management to really consider his bat while thinking about trading for Beltran. Besides, Huff is just in neutral.
Vance Worley is shutting everyone down right now, but who is the this guy?
Yeah, the Giants skipping Zito's last start tells you everything you need to know about what they think of him. MIght as well put Runzler or Surkamp or Yourkin or just about any young pitcher out there.
ReplyDeleteWorley was drafted out of Long Beach State in 2008 after a decent, but not great, college career. He's mostly pitched well in the minors except for his first AA season but nothing like this. His college and minor league record as well as his peripheral stats suggest that he won't keep it up at the major league level, but that's what they've said about Vogelsong too.
It is almost like the Giants are being held hostage or extorted for Zito's 50 some million left on his contract. I don't bolame Zito, because I wouldn't turn down the money either.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure that Bochy has seen enough of Zito to the just say "screw it".
