Down on the Farm: 7/24/2011

AAA Colorado Springs Skysox beat the Fresno Grizzlies 9-7:

Justin Christian(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(5), 2 BB, SB(14). BA= .299.
BIll Hall(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .667.
Nick Noonan(2B)- 1 for 1, BB. BA= .333.

Not a lot to see here. DeRosa had a scheduled day off? Hall is starting his rehab. Is there a place for him when he's done?

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels swept a DH from the Harrisburg Senators 4-1 and 7-5:

Game 1:

Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 1 for 2, HR(12), BB. BA= .267.
Juan Perez(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B. BA= .249.

Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 2.00.

Brown and Surkamp for Beltran is one trade that has been rumored to be agreed upon waiting for announcement. Sabes seemed to shoot that down saying they are not close to any trade.

Game 2:

Francisco Peguero(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .278.
Wilmin Rodriguez(LHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.70.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.25.

High A San Jose Giants swept a twinbill from the Visalia Rawhide 7-3 and 5-0:

Game 1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 3. BA= .316.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .249.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 13/3. ERA= 3.96.

Brown sat out on a scheduled day off yesterday fueling trade rumors. Guess it was....just a day off?

Game 2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3. BA= .316.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 2 for 3. BA= .271.
Alex Burg(C)- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .323.
Andy Reichard( RHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 9/0. ERA= 3.00.

Brown went 3 for 6 on the day.

Low A Lakewood Blueclaws defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 5-1:

Willoughby, Mazzola and Campbell had 2 hits each.

Short Season Vancouver Canadians downed the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-2:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(17). BA= .271.
Brett Krill(RF)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .383.
Brandon Allen(RHP)- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.65.
Matt Graham(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 10.59.

Allen gave up just 1 run through the first 5 innings. Graham gave up 2 in the 7'th but got out of the inning and came back to give up none in the 8'th. Baby steps! Galindo is on fire!

Rookie AZL Giants were idle.

DSL All-Star Game. I did not see any names of Giants players I recognized.

  1. Wow, if Brown/Surkamp for Beltran is true, how do you feel about that?

  2. Those 2 for Beltran is dumb. If we finish anywhere other than a repeat with him, the system will be set back a few years. I wouldn't mind Brown, Surkamp, and any other prospect except Belt or Wheeler for Hunter Pence. A guy who hits over .300 and 25 homers is definitely what we need. Plus, have you seen his arm? Watch him throw out Bautista in ASG. Awesome.

  3. where did you see that rumor? i havent heard that from anyone and i follow this stuff pretty closely. thats a gross overpay.

  4. That is a disgusting trade. Surkamp alone with another few non-need prospects such as Hector Sanchez and Gillespie is a trade that I would barely be able to swallow.

I like Beltran, don't get me wrong, but this seems like walking right into a frying pan where we get nothing in return for Beltran after he walks, and he could easily go cold or get injured. I don't like Brown + Surkamp one bit. That said, I think Brown might be swallowable as Peguero seems very strong to me, and Brown might not have what it takes at the upper levels with the bat..

  5. Funny incident yesterday with Richmond. Surkamp kept shaking off Monell's pitch selection, so Monell called time out and walked out to the mound. After a short chat, Monell goes back and does his signals and again Surkamp shook him off. Out comes Grimsley and after a stern discussion Surkamp finally threw a pitch.

I would hope the Giants hang on to Surkamp because I really don't buy into the rich pitching prospects that a near to the big time.

Brown, I have the announcer state a couple times that Brown made some bad routes to the fly ball. I really don't know much about Brown but if he would help get some hitting, I am for it.

  6. The Brown/Surkamp rumor was discussed in the Comments section of Extra Baggs. It doesn't sound like it has legs. It would be a lot to pay for a rental, but his bat would make a big difference in the lineup as long as he can stay healthy. Health and no guarantees that he would bring a repeat championship are what makes it a tough deal to swallow. It's an all or nothing type of proposition. I can see how management would be open to criticism either way, on the one hand being too cautious on the other selling the farm for another short term vet.

  7. Did you notice that Rosin pitched 2 innings with 5 K'S, no walks and 3 hits?

My point is when he on, his target has some tight pitch grouping.

Like to see him move to SJ real soon because the Little Giants are going to start being down here for a while.

  8. Yeah, I think Rosin's performance was in Saturday's game. I believe I listed it.

  9. Just a rumor, so far, and most of them are usually wishful thinking on the part of the other team or their fans.

If true, and I doubt it is, it is a bad trade. In any case, I would think that both are on Sabeans keeper list, so I will not worry about it until there is an official announcement.

About Browns defense, all the reports on him are that he was a natural in CF when they moved him from second base to CF. But everybody could have a bad day, or bad sun.

  10. brown/surkamp for beltran was started by a tweet with a fake account, purporting to be the mets beat writer

he spent the entire morning tweeting every major sports reporter, asking him if the rumor was true

then he started tweeting that the trade was all but done

there is no truth to it...sabean wouldnt do it...bowtie wouldnt let him

i would love for the giants to repeat...but not at the expense of missing out on having a 90 percent home grown team in 2013

    homegrown means inexpensive

homegrown means you can hold onto more players for a longer period of time, and can afford to get the chips you need to make another run

homegrown means the ability to create a perennial winning franchise is that much better

and winning the crown is great...but at the expense of 6 down years??? dont want a repeat of 05-09

giants are on the verge of becoming the atl 2.0

and trust me...they are gonna need to be...cuz the snakes are poised to be a true powerhouse starting next season
