Perez is hitting .448 over his last 10 games. Schoop is hitting .379 over his last 10 while playing SS every day. Been a long strange trip for Schoop the last 2 seasons. Stromsmoe gets to show off his pitching chops in a blowout.

High A No games scheduled in the Cal League.

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 3 for 4, SB(29). BA= .270.

Hadn't called Ben Thomas' name for awhile.

DSL Cubs edged the Giants 2-1 in 10 innings:

Emmanuel De Jesus(LHP, 17 yo)- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 2.60.

In his last 4 starts, De Jesus has 33 K's against 6 BB in 23 IP. How great would it be to have 2 high ceiling LHP's come out of the DSL this year?

  1. This morning rumors are breaking left and right: Giants will ship Zack Wheeler off for Carlos Beltran. Not sure how I feel about this, but the move makes it clear that the Giants want to win now.

This is one of those times I wish I never found your blog DrB, as I could say "Zack Wheeler? Who's that and who cares, we got Carlos Beltran?!" ESPN is saying the deal is 95% done, which means all the teams were posturing, telling leading sports-news outlets that nobody would give up a top pitching prospect for a rental...

  2. I like Wheeler but is walk rate scares me a bit.

  3. Yeah, hate to lose Wheeler. That would leave the Giants system very thin in pitching. They have heavily favored hitters in recent drafts. Tidrow and Sabes can rebuild it as fast as anyone if they make that a priority again, though.

I think given the Giants first place standing and how bad their offense is, they almost had to go out and get a hitter. As long as he can stay healthy, Beltran is as good as they are gonna get.

  4. hitting is much easier rebuild than pitching...as you pointed out in that earlier massive post

the bad thing about the trade is that when carlos walks...giants get nothing...no comp pick

the atl is refusing to give up any of their young arms for players...they know how to stay a winner

    its a bad trade

will be worse if the giants dont make it back to the ws

  5. Not ready to condemn the trade. Do you think the Yankees or Red Sox would have hesitated to pull the trigger on this trade if they were in the same position with their offense as the Giants?

I don't know where you get that hitting is easier to rebuild than pitching. Cain, Timmy, Bum, Sanchez, Wilson, Romo: It seems to me that the Giants built a pitching staff from within in very short order. They will have to change their recent draft emphasis on hitting though.

Yes, I would have preferred to give up a hitter than give up Wheeler, but it was one prospect for 1 rental. No guarantee the rental is going to give the team another title and no guarantee the prospect is going to pan out. Beltran is not Hillenbrand, Garko or just any rental. He was the best available hitter and a true difference maker in the lineup. No question in my mind he gives the Giants a better chance of repeating. When they are this close, I think Sabean would be remiss if he didn't seize the opportunity.

Again, I hate to lose Wheeler but I'm excited to have Beltran on the team. I don't think it is a bad trade.

  6. The Giants have been spoiled with pitching. How do you find 3 pitchers and have them make it to the big time so quickly? The real problem now, is that drafting at the bottom of the draft is just not going to find guys like those. Losing Wheeler kind of breaks the order and puts pressure to find 'that' pitcher in the next draft.

  7. Not saying it's a great situation but the Giants have several young arms who could break out and take Wheeler's place: Kendry Flores, Kyle Crick, Clayton Blackburn, Adalberto Mejia, Emmanuel De Jesus. They still have some more pitchers that may sign from this year's draft. The Giants were willing to take on all of Beltran's salary. They are getting $ 4 million of if from the Mets. They can use that money to sign some more international pitchers.

I don't like giving up Wheeler. Heck, I think I've been one of his biggest booster, but when you get a player like Beltran in return, even as a rental, if Wheeler is the price, you have to go for it.

There are tons of ways the Giants can re-stock the farm with pitching. First of all, I believe they can easily afford to hang onto the core of the pitching staff they already have. Second, if it does become clear they are going to lose one or more of them, they can be traded for top notch prospects like Wheeler or the Giants can get extra draft picks(depending on the new CBA, of course). They can delve into the international market and can focus the next couple of drafts on pitching.

Yeah, it was a tough trade to make but with the Giants this close and this badly in need of an offensive upgrade, I think they had to go for it.

  8. Wow, what a trade. Biggest I can think of during Sabean era mid-season, I think. I would not have done the trade, but neither do I condemn this trade either, it greatly improves the Giants chances of winning it all again this season. Matter of what the priority of the Giants management is. Carpe Diem appears to be the call.

What about Noonan? He was scuffling in AA, mysteriously gets promoted to AAA and starts banging the ball the way I had been expecting him to since I read that he learned some stuff from the video training system. Think he just took a while to figure out how to bring his improvements from training into real games or was he just in spring training mode for a long time since he started the season with an injury, didn't he?

  9. Sticking at SS all season has been huge for Noonan. EL is a tough place to hit. Look for the breakout next year if he is the starting SS in Fresno.
