Down on the Farm: 7/2/2011

AAA Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 7-5:

Brett Pill(1B-2B)- 1 for 5, HR(16). BA= .312.
Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .290.
Jason Christian(CF)- 0 for 2, 2 BB, S, SB(5). BA= .500.
Mike Fontenot(2B)- 0 for 3, BB. BA= .091.

You know, it's not like Fonty was tearing up the National League before he got injured. Still a miniscule sample size, but I'm starting to think Burriss might be the better option at 2B going forward. Get well, Freddy!

AA Reading Phillies beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4:

Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, SB(11). BA= .267.
Wes Hodges(1B)- 2 for 4, 2 HR(3). BA= .271.

Charlie has a 7 game hitting streak and is hitting .359/.405/.513 over his last 10 games.

High A San Jose Giants used the long ball to beat the Stockton Ports 8-4:

Brandon Belt(1B)- 2 for 4. BA= .500.
Alex Burg(3B)- 1 for 5, HR(5). BA= .397.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(7). BA= .241.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .273.
James Simmons(RF)- 2 for 5, HR(2). BA= .313.
Craig Westcott(RHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.21.

Belt starts his rehab playing 1B. Burg is from Washington State. He struggled in his first 2 college seasons at Clemson but hit .284 in his junior year and went .346/.466/.631 his senior year after transferring closer to home at Washington State. He was drafted in round 24 in 2009 and played at 3 levels in 2010. He had an IsoP last year of about .200, so this may not be completely a fluke. Love his ability to play both catcher and 3B. Joseph is hitting .244 over his last 10 games, just about his season average, but 7 of his 10 hits over that span have been for extra bases.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 8-0:

Ryan Lollis(RF)- 3 for 4. BA= .320.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 5.2 IP, 12 H, 8 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.83.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.69.

Rosin has an ERA of 2.66 with 29 K's in 23.1 IP over his last 10 appearances.

Short Season Everett Aquasox downed the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 8-4:

Kaohi Downing(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(3). BA= .388.
Brice Custpec(1B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .257.
Julio Izturis(2B)- 1 for 3, 2 HBP. BA= .178.
Cameron Lamb(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 10/0. ERA= 4.82.

Downing has been a revelation so far. He did make 2 errors in this game for a total of 6 so far, so maybe that's why the Giants didn't see him as a position player?

Rookie AZL Dodgers outslugged the Giants 12-8:

Christian Paulino(2B)- 2 for 5, HR(1). BA= .233.
Garrett Buechele(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR(2). BA= .308.
Devin Shines(CF, Dodgers)- 3 for 6, 2B, HR(2), SB(3). BA= .316.

Devin Shines is Razor's kid, drafted out of Oklahoma.

DSL Giants game was postponed.

  1. I wonder about Gillaspie. My hunch is that his major league line will probably look a lot like the average of his minor league lines - .280 to .290, 8-12 HR, (barely) average defense at 3B. He's probably pretty close to ready, and will be decent but not spectacular. With Sandoval seemingly entrenched at 3B, and Gillaspie not looking like a utility player (I don't see any attempt to try him at 2B, though they've dabbled with him at 1B), he's not much use to the Giants. But it does occur to me that he'd look pretty good in the A's lineup right now. I wonder if they'd give up a decent prospect for him?

  2. The talk about Gillaspie has been that 2B is his eventual position, as offensively he's not that great (nor defensively) but his low power puts him at 2B.

I think the Giants would want some plus from a bench player, whether versatility in positions, power, speed. He don't provide any of those.

So I think he will end up being, as Jim noted, trade bait of some sort, though I think it would be more as a package than one for one.

  3. Speaking of second base. Brett Pill has been playing the position most of the season. I don't care who you have to move from the 40-man to call him up, but give him a chance. What more does he have to do to get a look?! Nearly hitting .500 in his last 10 games!

  4. Thanks for commenting, everybody! Yeah, Doesn't seem like there's much of a future for Gillaspie's talents with the Giants. As thin as 3B is in the league, though, I would think there's some team out there who might want him in a trade package to see what he can do.

Pill kind of got passed by Belt like he was standing still, but he is having a fine season. I don't recall seeing him turn into an error machine at 2B. Tough to gauge range from box scores. If he can play 2B at all, I agree, give him a look-see.

  5. pill is an interesting case

    made the 40...then lost focus

regained after dropped and nobody in the majors wanted hime

his numbers look really good this year...would love to know what pitches bother him...should get a call sept 1 if not sooner

belt wont be back before sept either...he is not fully healed and will take a good 6 weeks to get his stroke back

frodo will be left in fresno for the week...he has been out too long to rush back

im very impressed with how the boys in richmond are playing...tomorrow they will be playing in front of a sold out crowd at the diamond....did dodd ever get sold out?

  6. DrB, I heard a comment somewhere (i think it was an interview with Evans) that sometimes a prospect hits the wall in his first full pro season, mid-way.

Would that be your opinion that is what happened to Gary Brown? He was doing so well, then stopped doing well. He did have a high BABIP, so some regression probably happens but do you think other teams have found something they could exploit?

He being slight in stature could mean that there is a stamina problem, potentially, so it could be that as well.
