Game Wrap 7/9/2011: Giants 3 Mets 1

It wasn't pretty, but Tim Lincecum, with help from the bullpen and a sputtering Giants offense, scratched out a win. That's how the Giants roll. Might as well accept it. Key Lines:

Aaron Rowand- 2 for 4. BA= .242. GamerTude contributed to 2 of the Giants runs with two opposite field singles, one against starting LHP Chris Capuano and the second against fireballing RHP Bobby Parnell. Tejada forced him at second in the first, but Tejada came around to score the first run of the game, which should have been Gamer. Couple of good catches in CF too. Nice game for Rowand.

Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .305. Pablo scored the second run of the game after doubling and drove in the insurance run in the 7'th with a single to RF. He ran his hitting streak to 20 games. The team record in SF Giants history is 26 by Jack Clark.

Tim Lincecum- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.06. Timmy had a weird night. He got the first two hitters out every inning he pitched and allowed the third batter of each inning to reach base. That's a whole lot better than allowing the first batter to reach and then trying to get 3 outs after that. Anyway, it all cost him a lot of pitches so he only lasted 6 innings. Still, it got the job done. Kind of a Jonathan Sanchez looking line there.

Javier Lopez- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.00. Apparently Bochy would rather have Lopez facing RH batters than Romo facing LH batters. He finally brought in Romo to get the last out so Romo ended up with the Save. Strange managing, but you can't argue with success.

With the Win, the Giants moved back to a 2 game lead over the D'Backs and assured themselves of remaining in first place through the All-Star Break as the D'Backs came from ahead to lose to he Cards 7-6. the Colorado Rockies remained in 3'rd place, 7.5 games behind with a 2-1 win over the Nats. The Dodgers moved into a tie with the Pathetic Padres with their second 1-0 whitewashing in a row. Both teams are 11 games back.

Matt Cain takes the mound tomorrow trying for a series win facing Mike Pelfrey who tends to run hot and cold. Against the Giants offense, it's safer to bet on him being hot.

  1. I don't know if you coined it or not, but the "Pesky Padre" moniker has been mentioned by the Padre crew a few times, giving credit to Giants fans using it.

You are a multi-organizational star, now, Doc :)

  2. I don't know if I was the first to use it, but I know I didn't see it anywhere else, and still haven't, so maybe I did start it. Who knows? Kinda funny though. They kind of alternate between Pathetic and Pesky. Right now, they are Pathetic for losing 1-0 to the Dodgers TWICE IN A ROW!

  3. The Peculiar Padres? Not sure what was causing Lincecum's travails tonight. Seemed to just have trouble selling some of his pitches.

  4. Addendum: Loved Romo totally abusing Scott Hairston for the final out.

  5. I think the Padres' mascot is kind of peculiar.

  6. Padres not only lost 1-0 on Sat, they had the Dodgers no-hit with 2 outs in the 9th before our old pal Uribe busted it up with a double and scored on a Navarro single.

Nice to see the Giants trying my (and everyone else's) suggestion, dropping Huff in the order. And batting Burrell 4th. Not much progress for either guy with this, but nice to try something.

Also, great to see Bochy stay with Lopez into the 9th. It's pretty clear that Romo pitching far better than Wilson right now. So...how many games does Wilson give up before the Giants to go to closer by committee?

  7. I think Wilson just needed a blow. I don't think he's completely right physically and probably should not be used more than 2 games in a row, especially if one of those games is a 2 inning appearance. If the Giants need a closer 3 games in a row, they have the horses to keep Wilson back.
