Down on the Farm: 5/30/2011

AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox topped the Fresno Grizzlies 8-6:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .291.
Thomas Neal(LF)- 1 for 3, 2B, HBP. BA= .350.
Brett Pill(2B)- 2 for 4, HR(9). BA= .304.
Travis Ishikawa(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3). BA= .273.
Brad Eldred(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(8). BA= .307.
Shane Loux(RHP)- 7 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.29.

Pill is still playing 2B. Eldred seems to be pretty versatile for such a big guy. Loux was cruising until he gave up a 6 spot in the 7'th inning. I wonder why Decker just left him in there?

AA Akron Aeros edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2:

Sharlon Schoop(3B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .182.
Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.98.

Schoop seems to have become an organizational player of multiple positions.

A+ San Jose Giants downed the Stockton Ports 5-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 4, 2 SB(30). BA= .374.
Wendell Fairley(LF)- 2 for 4. BA= .272.
Luke Anders(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(7). BA= .277.
Andy Reichard(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.30.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, HR, Save(17). ERA= 0.92.

Brown is just toying with the Cal League now. Sent him up to Richmond, already! Hembree still struck out the side despite giving up the HR.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets clobbered the Rome Braves 10-3:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 4 for 5, 2B, BB, 2 SB(20). BA= .284.
Raynor Campbell(CF)- 2 for 5, SB(7). BA= .248.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB, SB(3). BA= .263.
Devin Harris(RF)- 1 for 2, 2B, 3 BB. BA= .235.
Gaspar Santiago(LHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.23.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 4.10

Big day for Willoughby. Rosin must have been getting some extra work in due to his last start being cut short by rain.

DSL Giants topped the Nationals 4-1 in a game completed early after 7 innings:

Hector Mercedes(RF, 19 yo)- 2 for 3, HR(1). BA= .286.
Shurendell Mujica(SS, Age NA)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .429.
Marvin Barrios(RHP, 18 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Barrios is a 6 figure bonus baby from last year.

  1. i take it that loux took one for the team after last nights game....today, wind was 38mph to right....insane

  2. Edelfsen is on the DL. Not sure the nature of the injury.

  3. Still a little surprised the Giants are going so slow with Brown. The BA is obviously dominating, but 30 SB's already? If I were an A+ pitcher I would loathe the Giants for making me pitch with him on base - send him to AA already!

I remember reading a while back that Gillaspie has some sort of condition in his contract where he can opt out or something if he isn't in the Bigs by a certain point? Any light you can shed on that?

  4. Also. When Brown does go to AA, what do you think his splits need to be to be considering a top tier prospect at that level? I know that is a tough league to hit in for a lot of players...

  5. The lack of power-hitting corner IFs in Richmond is just sad, and should certainly influence the direction of this June's draft. Why not promote Luke Anders up there?

I cannot wait for Carlos Willoughby to get his chance in the upper minors.

  6. The Giants signed Conor Gillaspie to a major league contract apparently in exchange for a smaller signing bonus than he was asking for. Usually, a team can keep a player off the 40 man MLB roster for 4 seasons out of college and 5 seasons out of HS before having to expose them to the Rule 5 draft. By signing the MLB contract out of the chute, Gillaspie was able to bypass those 4 seasons. Once a player is placed on the 40 man roster, the team has 3 "options years" which means they can assign him to a minor league roster while keeping him on the 40 man MLB roster for 3 years. This year was Gillaspie's 3'rd option year. Next spring, he will have to either make the 25 man Active Roster or be exposed to waivers.

  7. Does anyone know what Peguero is doing?
I heard he was injured. But if Brown is promoted, and Peguero is back to health, the richmond outfield will be crowded.

  8. No updates on Peguero. If they are both in Richmond, Peguero will play RF and Brown will play CF.

  9. They will have Perez and Kieschnick, as well.
What a nice problem to have. Perz and Kieschnick don't count as serious prospects.

This is Peguero's second year on the 40-man roster. So he is losing very valuable time, unfortunately.

  10. Seen Perez and Peguero in CF and not impressed. Perez seemed a lot better. Same with Roger.

Sorry, I have seen Peguero and just not impressed. Brown is headed to SF in a hurry. Kid is serious....

  11. I thought that there was a rule about early 40-man rostering that gives the team a 4th option. I recall that we got an extra one for someone (Linden?) because of this rule (which might have have been under the hold CBA and not the new one, which could explain any change).

One thing the Giants have reportedly been doing with prospects is wait until the weather heats up in the east before promoting their better prospects there, as some complain that the cold affects them greatly. Given how cold (relatively) the South Bay has been this season, I expect that it is still pretty cold out east as well. That could explain why the Giants have not promoted Gary Brown and Hembree yet, as they usually promote by end of May those who have earned it.

I also like the point made about clinching the first half title, the Giants do seem to focus on San Jose winning titles while giving short shrift to AA and AAA in terms of winning.

  12. Brown's stats at AA? I'll say he needs a BA of .270 or more to keep doubts from arising about his status as a top prospect. Doesn't need to hit for power there at all, but needs to maintain a decent BA.

I regard Kieschnick as more of a prospect than Juan Perez, but he needs to get over the hump in Richmond.
