Down on the Farm: 5/10/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Nashville Sounds 6-3:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .288.
Brett Pill(2B)- 1 for 5, HR(5). BA= .324.
Brad Eldred(1B)- 1 for 3, BB, 3 SB(3). BA= .256
Matt Yourkin(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.54.
Marc Kroon(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(8). ERA= 3.29.

Not sure what happened with Eldred's steals. The box score has him stealing 2B, 3B AND HOME! Dude is a 31 yo 6'6" 270 lb 1B/DH type. Must have been quite a sight to see!

AA Bowie Baysox edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .247.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .190.
Clayton Tanner(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/3. ERA= 3.94
Dan Otero(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.11.
Jason Stoffel(RHP)- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, BS(4). ERA= 4.50.

Noonan seems to be holding his own at SS. Wouldn't it be something if he emerged as the Giants SS of the future? I see him as potentially being a lot like Mike Fontenot. Tanner avoided the walks and had better results. If he can do that consistently, he might end up as a decent #4 or #5 in MLB. Stoffell is still showing a lot of inconsistency.

A+ San Jose Giants out hit the Lancaster Jethawks 9-6(and the game was in San Jose):

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 5, 2 SB(21). BA= .366.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 3 for 5, 2 SB(6). BA= .263.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .275.
Tommy Joseph(1B)- 2 for 4, HR(3). BA= .248.
Hector Correa(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.59.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(9). ERA= 0.75.

Gotta think Brown is not long for SJ, unless the organization is still intent on letting SJ win championships, but that would be a huge waste of talent. Hembree looks like the kind of closer we were all hoping Jason Stoffel would be. Could he be Brian Wilson's eventual replacement?

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Rome Braves 5-4:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 3 for 3, 2 BB, SB(12). BA= .297.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .252.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 2 for 4. BA= .289.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.25.
Matt Graham(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 4-0. ERA= 5.32.

Willoughby was on base 5 times in 5 PA's. RafRod still hasn't shown much power, but he's maintaining a decent BA which is the most important thing for him to do at this stage. Good to see Matt Graham get back in the saddle after a disastrous outing. I'm really hoping the Giants are patient with him and he develops into something.

  1. Yeah, it must have been a keystone cop routine on a busted hit and run, that the score keeping generously gave Eldred 3 steals. Can't imagine any other way that could have happened. I will have to search out for that game's full recap somewhere.

With Noonan appearing to be snapping out of his spring training mode, he could be quite a drafting coup if he emerged as our future SS. I guess he wasn't kidding when he said that he continued to take balls at SS during batting practice, to keep up his skills as he learned 2B. I've been quite excited about his future after he had that breakthrough late in the 2009 season, more so after learning that he improved his batting mechanics using the Giants video training system and was hitting line drives. Due to that, I'm thinking he's at minimum like a Mike Fontenot who can hit well regularly plus steal a base occasionally (though that's fallen off the cliff, wonder if there is a reason).

Yeah, Gary Brown is pretty much making a mockery of things there, isn't he? I thought he would. He's still getting CS a little too much, only 70% success rate, but that's probably more technique than anything, he's a burner.

I was thinking the same about Hembree after his AFL performance last season. Just about right timing too, Wilson will be free agent in couple of years I think.

Yeah, RafRod's power can come later - it did for Sandoval - just get his hitting down first. He's doing OK, not striking out that much, boosting his BA. And besides which, he's only 18 in a league where the average pitcher's age is basically 4 years older than he is (21.9 Avg age vs. 18 YO season). Have to be special to be put in the league at that age, few are his age and in Sally already. He's fine.

Both Noonan and RafRod are players I'm anticipating a breakout at some point, they are pretty good at the plate but have just been among the youngest hitters in the league and only the best (like Bryce Harper) can hit well at that age in any league. I would be happy with above average for either, and I think they are showing signs that they are and just need more time and experience.
